The Savage Gardener #91

My family had a bit of excitement on Monday night (actually, Tuesday
morning). I woke up to the sound of our front door slamming and my dad on the
phone to the police because someone had attempted to steal our older van just
minutes before. They had gotten it down to the edge of our driveway but
couldn't start the car because my dad had installed a kill switch after HIS
car was stolen last year. It was pretty strange; there were about 10 cops
total and they had blocked all the entrances to my neighborhood and issued a
manhunt (they yelled out warnings through a megaphone and everything). Then
they brought the police dog (Larry - he brought us our newspaper!) to sniff
the van and were able to get 15 perfect prints off it. The scary part was
when the first cop to arrive drew out his gun to make sure there was nobody
still inside the van (the driver's and passenger's door was open). The
would-be thieves sawed the steering wheel and smashed the Club off, then
smashed the ignition lock. It was the kill switch that saved dear Florence
(we named her after my mom's grandma. Weird, I know). Anyway, the good news
is we still have Florence and she's getting repaired. Unfortunately for the
world around me, I inherited my dad's red-hot temper so my first instinct was
to break the necks of whoever tried to take her. Then I growled everytime I
looked at the damage they did to her. So I'm exhausted because it's Tuesday
night as I type this and will probably leave right now. While I go SLEEP, you
can read the rest of the newsletter (and take my advice: don't waste your
money on the Club, and install a kill switch!!).

**"The Animal Song" jumps up to #11 this week on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40.
Let's hope it makes the top 10!!

**Mr. Hayes will be making an appearance on the late-night show Politically
Incorrect with Bill Mahr. This will air on Friday, April 30th on ABC at
midnight (eastern and pacific), but check your local listings. My mom had a
good point, though: what's he doing on a show about American politics? Guess
we'll find out!

**Keep an eye peeled for a totally re-vamped www.savagegarden.com. The folks
there have put word out that the site will be up and running any day now.

**"The Animal Song" isn't even in the top 50 on the Billboard charts anymore,
so this is the last Billboard report until their new single is released just
prior to the new album. Once again, its peak was #19. Top 20, at least!

                                            Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: During his first year in Red Edge, Darren
would get so nervous onstage that he had to do what before each show? The
answer is, he would have to tape the lyrics to the songs on the stage at his
feet because he'd get so nervous he'd forget the lyrics! Anyway, nobody had
the answer right!!!

This week's quessie is: What has Darren said is the worst interview they ever
had to do?

Lauren,

Hey, I just wanna offer this about what you said about The Animal Song
not using actual drums.

I cant say it bothers me to be honest, I listen to a lot of industrial
music which is completely computerized, and while I like to hear real
instrumentation, sometimes a computer isnt half bad. Listen to that
intro for the Animal Song. I think the sound was perfect. Dont look for
SG becoming a techno computer band though :) Another thing, about them
doing it live, it wont be difficult. There is a synth band called Orgy
(who I really like) and they are half techno-synth, half real guitars.
They reproduce the sound onstage fine. Savage Garden wont have a problem
I dont think.

Just my two cents worth.

Oh yeah-- also I have kind of a funny story to tell you.  I am listening to
my single of "The Animal Song" right now and it reminded me of it. I had my
friend Heidi over one day and we were listening to the radio and TAS came on.
She started getting all excited , screaming and saying,  "Oh my god I love
this song!! It's so hilaroius!!!".  I couldn't hear what song it was at first
over her screaming so I asked "which song was this?" she said "The Cannibal
Song by Savage Garden!! Listen to the words, it's so funny!!" Of course, I
had heard it many, many times before and didn't hear anything quite that
funny about it before, but now I was just rolling on the floor laughing my
patoot off!! She actually thought it said "I want to live like cannibals,
careless and free, like cannibals, i want to live, i want to run through the
jungle ,the wind in my hair and the sand in my feet......."!!!!!!!!!!
and then it gives new meaning to the part, "sometimes this life {meaning the
life of a cannibal, LOL} can get you down, its so confusing, so many rules to
follow....." Actually it gives new meaning to the whole song!!!  I swear I
couldn't stop laughing for about an hour.  Put this in the newsletter, pretty
please, maybe some other people will find it amusing :)

A [email protected]

I think it's funny because I've been planning to "re-write" the song as a
cannibal spoof because it does sound like Darren's saying cannibal instead of
animal. I just have to find the time to do it. Unless someone wants to do it
for me! ~Lauren :o)

Hey....well...you HAD to ask a question about Billboard didn't you...knowing
full well that I was gonna answer :)

Well, here's the reason for Savage Garden's drop, way back...

Billboard's charts (at the beginning of this year) were changed to let song
without commercial singles in the chart....

So, they started counting Airplay of songs as 75% of the charts points...and
single sales was 25%....

BUT, Because of the increase in singles being put out...the format was
changed to make sales 30% and airplay 70%....

Soooo.....(yes this does have something to do with Savage G.)...

Since, their single IS NOT sale priced ($1.99/$.99) like others.....or should
I say like most...then the single isn't selling as many copies...but that is
a move to sell more of the albums (the Other Sister)....so, when the format
changed, then the songs that had been getting airplay, but not selling,
dropped a few spots....couple this with The Animal Song's airplay already
decreasing, and that is your reason for the big drop...

Well dang...that was a long drawn out explanation : )
Just thought you'd like to know though : )

[email protected]

To all other subscribers: You have just read a comment from the future
president (or whoever the big cheese is) of Billboard. Seriously, Eric knows
EVERYTHING about Billboard! This explanation itself should prove it! I have
to think of a question that would stump him...anyway, thanks to Eric for (yet
again!) knowing the answer to a Billboard question of mine. ~Lauren :o)

Hi peoples!! I have a couple-month-old Savage Garden website up for
grabs!! It's provided no charge by Angelfire. It's called Ultraviolet
Universe, and I share it with [email protected] but it's really getting
no where and she has her own site now, so we decided to let someone else
take over. I'm here if you need a hand, and since a bunch of the stuff
IS mine...
The url is http://www.angelfire.com/va/savagegarden (I would've
preffered its name in the url but when Sarah set it up it didn't have a
name yet.) If anyone would like to continue with this site, please
contact me and I will give you the current password. The password can be
changed if you would like to work on it alone, or if the current
password you find is hard to remember and you wish another one. (I
sometimes have a little trouble with it.) We have a chat room and 2
picture pages although only one has working pictures (that is, the pix
on the second page are corrupted or something). I'm fixing the site up
right now so that is looks decent (not that it didn't really before),
and the background is changing. Probably... So let me know if anyone
wants it. It's best if you already know HTML or if not it's not hard to
learn. There is a great help thinger on Angelfire and I have 3 over
here. This is on a first-come basis. Please let me know before the end
of the weekend. Thanks. If anyone needs help with their webpages, I'm
very good at HTML, and I also have 540 pix of Savage Garden!!! :)
Thanks, Lauren.

 Hey Lauren !!
Well done on the ever-always excellent SGer (the only way I actually know
what's going on in the world with SG) !!

Anyway, I have finally managed to see the TAS video !!  I  know that sounds
a but sad, really, but I don't have MTV, and at last they played TAS on a
video show !  I recognised the song before the video even came on !
Hopefully, soon, TAS will be released over here in Ireland !  I sat on my
bed, massive grin on my face, and eyes open wide !  Darren's smile is so
infectious !!  And Dan just looks way cool !!  I just felt so happy at
finally getting to see the video, after hearing it so many times (I have a US
cd) that I had to share my feelings !!
        Thanks Heaps !!
      Caroline.
Oh and if anyone hears anything about a possible European tour...please
please mail me !!  [email protected].

[email protected]

Yay for Caroline! Isn't the video fun? I'll keep my eyes and ears open for
info on when/if TAS will be released in the UK. As for tours, it's my
understanding that they won't be touring until next year. And speaking of
Ireland, I love The Corrs!!! (Awesome Irish band) ~Lauren :o)

There have been a ton of cases, as you know, of people online pretending to
be members of Savage Garden.  Darren has asked that his friends let others
know that he no longer chats on the net..he did a long time ago, but doesnt
now. I really frown upon people pretending to be something they arent,
especially if its hurting young people, by making them think they are talking
to someone they look up to, only to be abused by these "imposters"....you
have a large audience, and I know that alot of good will come of this getting
out. Darren has said that he will have the next fanzine include a bit about
this as well.  Just make sure everyone knows, if you can, that he doesnt chat
online, not on aol, not on mirc...and anyone claiming to be him is lying....I
know we cannot stop everyone, but we have caught quite a few. Thank Lauren,
for taking the time to read this....its much appreciated :)

Anyway, I have something
you maybe could put in the SG-er, you don’t have to, but I thought it
was quite interesting. In Anne Rice’s “Memnoch the Devil” Lestat is
talking about art and he mentions the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch,
who’s work is the inside artwork in the album. Are we seeing a
connection here??? Hieronymus Bosch is a very old, very dead Dutch
painter, by the way, which I thought was extremely cool ‘cause I’m
Dutch too, obviously… :) Oh, something else, in another book of the
Vampire Chronicles, “Queen of the Damned”, someone (I think it’s
Lestat) is talking about jungles and on the same page he mentions
Savage Garden, I thought that was funny, because of the Animal Song.
And one of the vampires in “Queen of the Damned” is called Daniel.

PS: Savage Garden was on Rock & Roll Jeopardy last night! :) The answer
was “Truly Madly Deeply” under 90’s #1 hits, and of course I
immediately screamed “SAVAGE GARDEN!!!”. The contestants had to think
about it a little longer though, but one of them knew. :) I just
thought it was really cool. I mean, you obviously mean something in
music if you get into Rock & Roll Jeopardy, or is that just my
opinion?? :)

[email protected]

I agree with you!!!! And that's so freaky about the Anne Rice books! I was
watching the movie "Volcano" a while back and while the city was evacuating,
the camera panned a shot of the Hieronymus Bosch art gallery and of course I
immediately thought of SG! Anyway, thanks for your info! ~Lauren :o)

**Alright, all you aspiring writers. As you all know, I'm preparing for a
couple months of an "empty" SGer prior to the release of the new Savage
Garden single and album. So in an attempt to spice things up a bit, a fellow
reader came up with a brilliant idea. Brittany ([email protected]) suggested that
we have a Savage Garden Musical contest, inspired by the whole "Mine",
"Break", "Words" trilogy. Rather than a trilogy, she suggested people write a
musical built around Savage Garden songs. If you're interested in writing a
play-like script, email me for all the rules. We're thinking of having the
due date in the middle of July, so you'll have plenty of time to work on it.
Don't ask for the rules unless you're honestly interested and really want to
do it, as Brittany and I want to have a grasp on how many entries we'll have.
Now c'mon SGer readers! I've been really disappointed with the lack of
participation lately! Give me back my faith in you by joining in!

**We have a new thing coming up for you nice subscribers! It's called "Our
Turn in the Spotlight: The Savage Gardener's Fan of the Week" and it was an
idea from [email protected]. Here she is with the "official" email explaning
it all:

Hey Lauren!
I was thinking that it would be nice to get to know our fellow SGers a little
bit better!
We all know about our love for Savage Garden, but what else? So,I put together
a little thing I call "Our Turn in the Spotlight". It's just a short
questionnaire to fill out,
then send to me,and then I'll pick one each week to send to put in the SGer.I
just thought it would be fun to see what else we may have in common with
everybody,
and maybe make some new friends. So,if you're interested write to me and let
me know.I'll send you the questionnaire to send back to me so you can have
your turn in the spotlight!!!!

To show an example (and me being the first Spotlight!), here is my filled-out
questionnaire.

thought so. Anyway, the time has come for me to do it again, and you have
plenty of time (a month) to think of a message and send it to me. Keep it
short and sweet, and your name is optional. Update: All birthday wishes MUST

sent to Australia. If you haven't sent in one yet, do it now.

And speaking of birthdays...I want to wish a VERY happy birthday to our
lovely webmistress and dear friend of mine, Sarah. She'll celebrate birthday

wish her a happy birthday!! Thanks for all you've done for me, Sarah! I hope
you have a terrific day! Happy 20th!!

That's it for this week! Don't forget to do any of things I've listed above
(I can't even remember them all!). One more  HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Sarah!! Quick
change of gears here...my thoughts are with the people of Littleton,
Colorado, especially all the families and friends of the innocent victims.
And may Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold burn in hell for what they did.

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
