The Savage Gardener #87

Well, I'm disappointed. I had this little goal for myself that I wouldn't get
sick at all during the winter. Wouldn't you know it, I got sick the DAY BEFORE
spring. The last day of winter and I got sick. It would only happen to me. I
only started feeling better this afternoon (it's Wednesday now, I've been sick
for 4 days) and was going to postpone the SGer until I felt well enough to be
online long enough to finish the work. But I'm better now and here we are. As
for the Oscars, I won $5 in a bet with my mom (which will go toward the new
Joey McIntyre CD. Guilty pleasure - he's sooooo cute and I love love love that
song! Only know I feel obligated to not bash the New Kids on the Block
anymore. Love is a funny thing) so I'm happy, even though majorly disappointed
that "Saving Private Ryan" didn't win. But did you see Gwyneth Paltrow's
acceptance speech? The whole auditorium was crying! And Roberto Benigni - what
an awesome guy! He'd be fun to be around! Anyway, on with Savage Garden!

**"The Animal Song" made the biggest jump on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40
again! It's now at #14, and according to Mr. Dees...people from all over have
been calling in for it! It looks like another #1 is here! Thanks to
[email protected] for the info (as I have slept through the countdown
AGAIN). But it's best put in the words of the famous DJ himself: "Thanks,
Australia, for these guys."

**The guys are in the April issue of Rolling Stone (Australian). Thanks to
[email protected] for the info! Lucky Aussies!

**Missed Savage Garden's appearance on Hard Rock Live the second time around?
You can catch it again on May 15th on VH1.

**"The Animal Song" makes another jump on the Billboard charts, resting
comfortably at #19 and still noted as one of the greatest gainers of the week.
I hope it goes all the way!!

Hey Savage Lovers!! I want Savage Garden on MTV TRL as I am sure all of you do
too! We need to get all those same people off TRL and we need Savage Garden
there, we can get them to #1 spot!  So lets show everyone how great Savage
Garden is!! Send me your name, a message to Carson Daly and where you are
from. We can get them on TRL. I know we can! Savage Garden so does deserve. it
our poor guys are being sued! So just send me your name, location and message
to [email protected]
Thanks Stay Savage lovin!! (:

I also have something to add, not to my petition but a message to anyone who
has an SG website and who likes them, there is this girl Christine and she is
just so mean about Savage Garden she has been leaving nasty messages on
websites. I have been emailing her telling her to knock it off. Any Savage
Garden fan feel free to email her [email protected] it really hurts me to know
that someone can be so mean about Darren and Daniel. Savage Garden is the best
thing in the world to me and without them i dont know what i would do.

[email protected]

Regarding this Christine chick, I don't know if I would waste my time. She's
just a pathetic loser who has nothing better to do. Come on, I don't go around
leaving nasty messages in people's websites that are for
bands/singers/actors/etc. that I can't stand. But if anything, just tell her
to GET A LIFE. ~Lauren :o)

lauren!
i just watched an interview with SAVAGE GARDEN and i wanted to tell you
this ..........

molly meldrum was interviewing them and he asked them whether it was
difficult for them to get back together after their first album as they
both had after all, different lives, interests etc...
and he asked them whether it was hard for them to live up to the pressure
of writing a new album and asked them about their general creativity.

so darren replied that 6 years ago, he used to drive down to daniel's house
to write songs and when they'd take a break, he'd make himself this peanut
butter and banana sandwich for lunch. he said that now he'd not eaten his
sandwich for 6 years now and when they were writing the new album he wold
as usual drive down to daniel's house and he's find himself making himself
this same sandwich. he said "i hadn't eaten that in 6 years but when i
write songs with daniel jones i eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches" !!
(perhaps you already know this?....)

about the general pressure and expectations regarding their 2nd album, they
said that they didn't want to make a new album just for the sake of selling
a few records (and that i notice is something that everyone who manages and
subscribes to the SGer has believed in) and that they didn't want to
disaaapoint their fan base and daniel said that they hoped to rekindle the
same passion of the first album. and the best thing that they said that
they were out to impress only themselves. i thought that was really sincere
and truly remarkable because that just shows that they're not out to make
the kind of music that everyone likes, just the kind that they like and by
a stroke of good luck for them (and more so for everyone who likes them) we
just think that that their music is outta this world!

they said that their next single would be out around august and their new
album around the same time.

i'm trying to get a transcript of the interview and if i do i'll surely
send it along. (unless you already have it? it was an interview from
channel [V] australia's show THE DRUM)

and regarding the sandwich! guess what i'm eating for lunch now! haha.
umm..maybe one could call it a savage sandwich perhaps!?

[email protected]

August?? People are going to wonder what happened to them (and as a side note,
this means EMPTY SGer for a couple months again!). Oh well, that's so cute
about the sandwich thing and I've never heard any other musicians say they're
doing the album for themselves. People like them are so rare! ~Lauren :o)

P.S. The full transcript is towards the end of the Comments section! Thanks,
Shreya!

Lauren!!!!
Ok, so I read what everyone said about this bloody singing w/
accents thing, and I meant to email you about it, but I didn't have time
in the past week!!!! But this is the real reason, I know this for fact
cause I sing myself and this was on my past years final exam, its because
when you sing, anyone for that matter, you have to form your vowels in a
certain way, and if you do this correctly, you in turn don't go sharp or
flat either, ie. you stay on pitch. I know that may sound kind of funny
if you don't sing, but thats the reason why, just thought Id mention it
to you!!!!!

Woooo! An official answer! ~Lauren :o)

Hi Lauren!
A while back I read an interview with Darren in which he mentioned the
book "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card.  The problem is, I can't find
that interview!  I'd been jumping around so much that I got confused,
and I'd really like to find it again to see what he said about that
book.  I do know that it was a typed interview on the web, not audio.
Please put this in the Savage Gardener, so that if anyone knows where
the interview is they can e-mail me at [email protected]  Thanks!!

this is something i'd like to ask everyone so please put it in!

i've been to only one SAVAGE GARDEN concert as they've come to india only
once....but this was something i noticed...during some songs (carry on
dancing was one of them) darren tends to stop dancing and he just stops
wherever he is and singles out ONE person in the audience and STARES RIGHT
INTO HER EYES for a couple of lines. i was lucky enough to be in the front
row and be one of these persons and it was a feeling and a half to have
darren look STRAIGHT AT YOU...wow his look is something else! and it was
all the more cool for me because carry on dancing is my FAVOURITE SAVAGE
GARDEN song. what i wanna know is whether he does it at every concert?
maybe he could do it here coz the concert here wasn't a really large scale
affair, and we were really close to the stage unlike other concert clips
i've seen where the stage is a few feet away.....this was so close that  i
could see the sweat on darren's neck! so does he always do that is what i
would like to know. people who've been to concerts please either reply to
me or tell me through the SGer. thanx!

Hi Lauren!! Can you please include this in the next Savage Gardener?
Thanks!!

A website for all music lovers: http://www.angelfire.com/mt/musictalk
I've been waiting anxiously to get articles, etc. from everyone who
knows about the site. Articles about what? About music of any genre!! :)

Let it be pop, rock, heavy metal (although I know there are few in every

city who like this type of music- or there were before Korn...), country

or even opera (!!), this site is for anything and everything!!
We (the other 3 (!!) website builders and I) have an artist of the week,
and
currently (in fact it has been about a month!!), the group is R.E.M.
The trivia question which I hope almost everyone will at least try to
answer, is: Why did drummer Bill Berry quit? And the topic question
(although you do not have to write in only about this if you wish) is,
What do you think R.E.M. stands or should stand for besides 'Rapid Eye
Movement'? You can write in about any band at any time. We also welcome
reviews of cd's, songs and concerts. If you have any photos, artwork,
poems, sound clips or Gif animations, they are also welcome!!
I have recieved absolutely nothing!! I've told just about everyone I
know about this site (just wait till tomorrow when I go back to
school...!!
hehe) and I've recieved nothing, and I don't think even a simple, short
comment. So PLEASE contribute!!! PLEASE!! Oh yeah and I forgot to
mention, we also have a chat room. It can be also accessed through any
site with irc.ram-page.com as #musictalk
Next week Saturday or Sunday, the Artist of the Week will be Everclear.
Thanks.

*******************
Hi Lauren ......here's the interview. It was on this show called The Drum
hosted by Molly Meldrum.

mm --- well Savage Garden have come out with a great new song, it's called
The Animal Song it's from the film called The Other Sister which stars
Juliet Lewis. The film is not out till the 5th of may but the song of
course it out now, it debuted at no.3 on the Australian charts. Well done
to the boys! It's a fantastic song, and of course this is the first taste
of the new material since the debut album. So well done to the boys and of
this is what the taste is the new album, the 2nd album is gong to be
fantastic so here it is right now while I catch up with Daniel and Darien
in L. A.. to talk about the animal song and a lot more......

mm --- Darren, Daniel, here we are in L.A.! a new song, finally a new song.
Lets' talk about it.

DARREN--- Actually when we were on tour last year in America, Disney
arranged for us to see a screening of this film called The Other Sister and
it was just an amazing film. We had been offered...we had the opportunity
to write songs for films a few times, but we either didn't have the time,
or it just didn't feel right, but this film just struck a chord with us and
we thought, we really wanna do this and we didn't really have the time but
we decided to get the ball rolling and when the tour finished, we started
writing this song back and forth across the Atlantic ocean using like zip
disks, computer disks coz I'd just been to America and we started writing
this song for the film and this is it.

mm --- There have been times when other people write songs for films, like
Bryan Adams etc. etc. Had you seen the rushes......?

DANIEL --- Yeah, we had...well actually it was the goo goo dolls who had
the challenge of writing the song Iris for City of Angels and I read that,
and I thought that would be really interesting and a good challenge to try
and you know.. achieve. And a few weeks later after reading this interview,
we got an offer for a similar challenge so we actually got a chance to see
the whole film in New York in a private screening and it gave us what we
needed to to put down the right feel and the right lyrics to the song and
it was fantastic

DARREN --- It was like a rough cut and the music wasn't permanent and the
shots weren't permanent, but it really got us and it was good to have the
opportunity to see the whole piece and react to it. And I don't think I
could have done it any other way. You know I couldn't have had a song
that's not quite that good and just asked someone to put it in the film.
This was definitely something that we wrote FOR the piece.

mm --- I've heard the song and it's a great production and about this
producer, how did that happen, tell us about that

DARREN --- Okay, um, potentially, this will be on our next album as well,
so this is on the soundtrack to the film, but it's the first release from
the new album and we're very cautious about the kind of producer we want to
work with because we've been looking at people like William (something- I
didn't get that!) even Phil Finaley (or something that sounded like that!)
for a little while and Columbia suggested this guy called Walter ......
(sorry I couldn't get that either, but he's the producer of their single,
maybe you know his name?) and our hair stood on end because he had worked
with people like Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, not our kind of music.....

DANIEL --- Kenny G! was the one that clinched it
(both laugh)

DARREN --- And we said nice actually...but really, I mean, I guess we just
had no idea about his abilities till we met him and he was very persistent
and would find out on a weekly basis and say, when are the boys gonna work
with me and come on gimme a shot and he basically said that look you can't
lose and come to my studio which is this thing called Wally World in San
Francisco....try it.. and we had the best time, and I think it's one of the
best sounding pieces we've done and we're so grateful that we had the
opportunity to work with him and we want to probably do a lot of our next
record with him

mm --- Now looking in retrospective, you're still on the billboard charts,
5 platinums, I mean God knows how many videos around the world...do you
know the figure now? Which is really quite scary. The idea of doing a
second album, of maybe breaking away from the formula of the first album,
you know the kind of recording,

DARREN --- You know everyone kept saying to us do you feel the pressure
about the second record and when they're asking us those questions we keep
saying no, no, not at all because really, we just keep writing ourselves,
we're writers, and the other stuff, making videos, taking photographs,
being a public presence ...that all came, secondary, we had to learn to do
that  later and we're still learning. And I expect the only pressure that
we still feel is to impress ourselves (to Daniel) do you agree?

DANIEL --- Yeah absolutely

DARREN --- Everyone has their expectation, but the pressure that I would
feel is that I wouldn't want to disappoint the fan base. You know I
wouldn't want people who listen to our music to think that we quickly came
out with something to show off a record. But we've changed a lot it's been
over three years since we made that record and we've been listening it a
lot of different kinds of music and just listening to the songs that we've
written for this record...you know we've just about finished the writing
process and were about to go back to recording....

mm --- will you be able to produce it?

DARREN --- we're not sure...

DANIEL --- About the first album, it's just right up there....financially,
it's bug money and we recorded this first record for next to nothing and it
went out and sold......and it's worth it but we've got an argument against
spending that kind of money on an album because we sold 11 million copies
of one album that I'm sure is hardly anything......

DARREN --- More than anything, it's all about the songs and at the moment,
we're really excited because we've got this collection of songs of which
50% of the songs are great pop songs and that's what we do ..we can't
apologize for that, we love doing and the  other 50% are really emotional,
and very different to what you would expect I guess from us

mm --- There's always some pressure on a 2nd album after the enormous
success, like Alanis Morisette did and she's happy with her album, very
comfortable with herself. Does it relieve any pressure because this is in
between what you've done and what you're doing?

DARREN --- You know Alanis is a really good example because you look at her
record she sold millions and millions on copies and everybody said can she
do it again and then all of a sudden there's this song called "Uninvited"
which wasn't really her next record which is just this song..a fantastic
song and I don't think anyone's asking that question about Alanis anymore
because she did do it. And I think a similar thing is affecting us at the
moment and the pressure really is...because you know, here's this song and
we're really really proud of it and guess what? We're into our second
record already even before we know it.

DANIEL --- It's going to be a challenge to live up to the expectation ...at
the end of this... it is, we've sold a lot of records on a debut album and
that doesn't happen very often, but inside of us, we were pretty content
when this album sold 10, 15 copies. It was a good feeling that we had one
airplay, people like you talking about us, we had videos on TV.... it was
all what we wanted so we kind of just sat back .....

DARREN ---You know it took 3 years for us to sell 11 million copies of that
album and day one we're into the second album and can we compare to those
11 million copies...so it'll take us another 3 years to go back and see how
this album compares to the first one

mm --- So what's up in the next 6 months? I mean obviously the new
album......

DANIEL --- We're both going to go in and try and nail this next record. We
have to see it as a challenge to go and achieve the luck of the first one.
We have to somehow try and ignite the passion of that we had on the first
record again on this next record and that's probably the hardest thing to
do. But we're really just gonna try and do it! And that's about it. And
we're hoping to release a second single which will be say around August and
then the album around that time. So that's all that's really on the cards
at the moment.

mm --- When you say ignite...I mean you both were very close and still are,
but as time goes one, you have your own lives and there are many reasons,
apart from artistic reasons...you earn a lotta money, you have your own
interests....is it hard to come back?

DARREN --- We've never had to come back together before, this is the first
time we've don't it and I think it felt great...I came down to Australia
and I'd have  noticed if there was a problem....because I was driving down
to Daniel's house everyday to write some songs with him, just like I'd done
6 years ago and we took a break from songwriting and I realized I was
making the same lunch that I used to make 6 years ago

DANIEL --- you wanna say what it is?

DARREN --- it's rice cakes, with peanut butter and bananas on top. I hadn't
eaten that for 6 years, but when I write songs with Daniel Jones, that's
what I eat!

mm --- so that's the secret recipe for success!

DARREN --- But it's funny...because when I realized, I said God! That's
what I'm doing! And then we just straight went back into it and it's a
comfortable feeling. And we'll do anything we can to protect that. we've
got this special thing in here (meaning the lunch...Darren shapes his palms
like a lunchbox) we do live in different parts of the world, and we do get
apart and might not speak to each other much, but he's like my brother and
what we do have is this song writing thing and if we don't have that we
don't have anything
=============================================================

that was it lauren, i hope you liked it. i just couldn't get the names of
their producers.....couldn't figure them out!

what i really liked about it was that they seem really clear about what
they want and the kinda music they want to make and that they see
everything not as a hurdle but as a challenge as daniel says so often. what
i also liked is that daniel spoke quite a bit compared to his usual
silence!

this really killed me! this has been done at 3 in the morning.....i
couldn't run the fan or the ac coz it was too noisy and i coudn'r hear and
the mosquitoes sucked the blood from my veins, but i feel really great that
i did!
hope you're feeling better.

butter, and bananas, you crazy fans! <insert innocent look here> Anyway,

Hiya Lauren!

Well, firstly I would like to announce the opening of...*drum roll*

THE SAVAGE FANFIC HUNT!

Yes! If you like to read fanfics, enter the Savage Fanfic Hunt! It's at
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Field/3257/fanfics.html . Closing Date: 30th
May 1999!

Oh and can you put the bit above (the one about the hunt) and this bit below
into the
Gardener? I know it's kinda long, but PLEASE grant my request! Thank you! OK,
here
goes:

Have you guys ever heard of the Super-Troupers? They're actually a group
comprising of
Billie, B*Witched, Steps, Cleopatra and Tina Cousins. They teamed up to do an
ABBA
medley during the Brit Awards and the single 'Thank ABBA For The Music' was
released a
few days ago - Animal Song was released last week! ANYWAY, I was watching the
vid one
day and I was thinking, 'Hmm, why don't Savage Garden do a medley with some
other Aussie
artistes for charity?' (The ABBA song is for the Brits Fund). Then today,
during a break
between tests, all these details came into my head, so I wrote them down on
the back of
my question paper, which we didn't have to hand over! Here's what I wrote:

Group Name: The Ozzies
Performing During: 1999 ARIAs
Who: Savage Garden + Human Nature + Kylie Minouge + Natalie Imbruglia + Kate
Cebrano +
Tina Arena + Dannii Minouge (Kylie's lil sis)
What Medley: Bee Gees medley
In What Order:
1) Savage Garden + Natalie Imbruglia + Tina Arena + Dannii Minuoge = You
Should Be
Dancing
(ok, ok, I know that daz's probably the only guy singing this...but hey, give
it a
shot!)
2) Human Nature + Kylie Minouge + Kate Cebrano = How Deep Is Your Love
3) Human Nature + Savage Garden = More Than A Woman (they sing to the girls)
4) Kylie Minouge + Natalie Imbruglia + Kate Cebrano + Tina Arena + Dannii
Minouge =
Tragedy
5) Everyone = Staying Alive
Notes: Daniel Jones sings along too! Everyone dances along, even though they
aren't
singing
Clothes: Retro

What do you think? I'm thinking of emailing it to Molly Meldrum but I don't
know his
email addy! :)

[email protected]

Wow!! That sounds like it'll be so cool! You know, I think one of the most
wished-for events in Savage Garden Fandom history is hearing Daniel sing, if
just for a moment. But I doubt we'll ever hear it! I wish I could see this!!
But watch out - both Darren and Daniel's little ladies (and I don't mean that
literally, they just like them) will be appearing with them (that would be
Natalie-Darren and Kylie-Daniel). ~Lauren :o)

Quite a few people sent in explanations for what an offset printer is, but
this was the latest one I received so I decided to put this one in (in case
any of you were as lost as I was about what it was!). Thanks to all who
explained it!

Offset printing :

Taking a picture of a newspaper or other printed material in that form
and placing it on another piece of paper in reproduction style. Daniel
probably never could have this profession because everything is being
done on computers now and its is an obsolete job.

That's it for this week! If you'll excuse me I'll go to bed and try not to
freak out when I see my dark reflection walking down the hall. My mom decided
to put a mirror at the end of the hallway so now when I watch a scary "X-
Files" late at night and all the lights are off I think some psychopathic
killer (or alien. Or the FLUKEMAN!) is walking towards me. When in fact it's
just some crazy person who stays up too late anyway. Thanks, Mom. Anyhoo,
don't forget to vote for "Animal" on TRL!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make no money
for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty big company
like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me (especially since
you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's earnings, anyway). Besides,
my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just watched contains
real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
