The Savage Gardener #86

     HAPPY BELATED ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!

I got a TON of answers responding to my question about why
Australian/British/Irish/etc. people don't have their "accents" when they
sing. In fact, all the messages basically had the same idea. But for me to try
to explain it would be pointless, so I'll just randomly pick one of the
answers I got and stick it in the Savage Comments section. But there was one
who said that it's because music is another language and "with it's own
beats/pauses/holds/stresses etc. depending on the tune of a song  so.. they
can't sing with the same sounds as when they speak..". Sounds good to me!
Thanks [email protected]! A quote from Darren (sent in by [email protected]) sums
up exactly how I feel: "We tend to love every foreign accent except our own."
American accents are boring to me! And thanks to all who answered me - you did
help a lot! Anyway, some of you let me know that you'd back me up in case
someone important tried to shut me down! In fact, this important someone
better watch out for [email protected]: "Lauren I think you've been doing
a great job with the newsletter and if anyone tries to shut you down they'll
have to go through me first.". I think I have all the protection I need from
her!

**Just when you thought it was over...first "Truly", then "Animal"..."Tears of
Pearls" follows these two songs and makes an appearance in an upcoming movie!
The movie's called "Next to You" and stars Melissa Joan Heart. I don't know
anything about the release date, this movie was seen by [email protected] at a
screening (which is how I got the info about the song's appearance). What
song's next??

I think I made my point quite clear. Anyway, by now you all have heard about
that dumb lawsuit that Hit Records has against Savage Garden in Australia (if
you're a new subscriber and don't know anything about it, go to the SGer's
website, which has the back issues). Well, a fan has decided to do something
about it. She has a petition going that shows the fans' (that would be you)
support for Darren and Daniel and "wish them well in fighting this blood
sucking company" in the words of the petition mistress herself! If you want to
get involved, and I KNOW you do, just send your name, age, email address,
country, and a little message for the guys (preferably about the lawsuit) to
Michelle: [email protected]    This is a great thing she's
doing and I hope that you'll help her out with this. The deadline is SOON
(before April), so get your info to Michelle ASAP.

**Want to win a "The Animal Song" vinyl (aka record album. A real record
record)? Check out the official Savage Garden Sony site at
http://www.savagegarden.com for more info. The deadline is March 29th. Thanks
to [email protected]

**"The Animal Song" makes another jump this week on the Billboard charts,
going to #22. It's also one of the greatest airplay gainers and record sales
this week!!

                                                Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: What did Daniel originally study to be?
(Bonus points if you can explain to me what the heck it is!!). The answer is
an offset printer, and only one person guessed right. But I still don't know
what an offset printer is!

[email protected]

This week's quessie is: What three songs do Darren consider as a trilogy
(trilogy - a set of three stories, plays, movies, etc. that form a complete
story. Famous trilogy: The Star Wars movies, Darren's fave!)

Here's the random answer to my question about accents showing up in songs (or
lack thereof):

Ya know I've been asking that same question numerous times to my mom!! She
first told me that singers work on losing their accents but I dont think
that's it. So then I asked my mom again and she thought more about it and this
is her theory:
When we talk we just use our vocal chords and use just those muscles involved
in talking. But when we sing we use different or more muscles then we use when
we  talk. Ya know how a singer is told to sing from their diaphram or
something like that? Their sound comes from more than just the vocal chords.
Singers have to work on their breathing and vibrato so their voice can sound
rich and full.
I hope that made some sense and helped you a bit.

Once again, thanks to ALL who answered that question for me - most were pretty
long so I appreciate you taking the time to type it up! ~Lauren :o)

Darren and Daniel live, daniel is playing the guitar behind the keyboards
and darren sings next to him with his arm on daniel's shoulder.
That's all....

Lauren,

I have an odd (but delightfully wonderful) bit of Savage info for you.  I
recently saw the new Robert DeNiro film 'Analyze This" and towards the
ending of the film, Robert DeNiro's character gives Billy Crystal's
character a fancy white stone  statue...the same statue that was in the U.S
video for "Truly Madly Deeply."  I thought that was amazing, and it made me
like the film better too.

That's so cool! My mom said the movie was disappointing, unfortunately. Well,
if any of you goes to see the movie, look for it! ~Lauren :o)

**I have nothing to say here (for once). Ohhh, I know! The Oscars are coming
up! I love it. My 2 must wins: Best Picture - "Saving Private Ryan".
Unquestionably the greatest movie I've ever seen. It still haunts me! Best
Actress - Gwyneth Paltrow. I've loved her since I saw "Emma" 3 years ago and
she's still my idol! Ok, that's enough.

That's it for this week! DO NOT forget to send your info to Michelle regarding
the Savage Garden lawsuit as soon as you can.

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make no money
for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty big company
like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me (especially since
you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's earnings, anyway). Besides,
my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just watched contains
real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
