The Savage Gardener #84

I finally saw "The Animal Song" video! I stayed home from school on Tuesday to
take care of my dad, who was sick, because my mom had to work (I'm not
complaining, I got a day off!). I turned on VH1, and it had just started. Real
Video needs to work a little more on their program - it didn't do the video
justice at all! Anyway, I LOVE Daniel's longer hair, and it was so great to
see Darren smiling so much. Mr. Hayes has such an infectious smile! Anyway,
what a fun, colorful, lively, video. And they picked the cutest scenes from
the movie to use (the movie, by the way, was GREAT. I highly recommend seeing
it. I loved it sooo much. But just a word of advice...if you cry easily at
movies, take tissues. Some scenes are so sad you want to pull your hair out
bawling at the top of your lungs.). Anyway, I'll sit here typing the rest of
my work while eating Girl Scout cookies (I loooooove those so much). Too bad
they only come out once a year! Hey, did anyone watch that "Opening of the
Lost Tombs" thing on Fox on Tuesday? It looked fake...and I cracked up when
they were saying how they believed aliens built the pyramids and that we're
all really descendants of martians. Ok, I'll stop babbling now and get back to
the reason you're reading this newsletter. Whew, long intro this week (I have
a lot to say, ok?!?!)...

**Savage Garden is in the latest issue of Twist magazine (April). So check it
out! Thanks to [email protected] and [email protected] for the info! And here's
the teeny little article, which is also accompanied by a pic I'm sure we've
all seen:

Savage Garden
Hometown: Brisbane, Australia

This Aussie duo snagged their name from an Anne Rice novel, but they're the
farthest thing from scary. And please don't call singer Darren Hayes (left)
and guitarist-keyboard player Daniel Jones (right) a one-hit wonder. "I Want
You", their debut single, was no first-time fluke - their third single, "Truly
Madly Deeply", shot straight to number one. Bored by the grunge scene and
bonded together by their mutual love for '80s pop music, Darren and Daniel
formed Savage Garden three years ago. It was mission possible: They rocked the
land Down Under first, then moved on to conquer the world. Says Darren: "We
dreamed really loud."
   ^~~~I love that quote!

**Savage Garden are up for the Favorite Group award for the 1999 Blockbuster
Awards! They're up again the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls (has there
even been anything from the Spice Girls lately?) so vote vote vote!! Go to
http://www.blockbuster.com/awards/  and you should be able to take it from
there :)  The only bummer is you can only vote once per email address (you
type yours in). But I've fixed that problem...I've been making up email
addresses and voting non-stop (for Savage and Ricky Martin. That man is so
delicious!). Among my fake email addresses: [email protected],
[email protected], [email protected],
[email protected], [email protected],
[email protected], and [email protected]
Oh no....I just realized you CAN vote more than once per email address. Oh
well, at least I got creative. Sigh...

**The soundtrack to "The Other Sister" is available now. "The Animal Song" is
the first track on the CD.

**"The Animal Song" debuted on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 this past weekend
at #34. I haven't done Top 40 stats in sooooo long!

**"The Animal Song" debuted on the Australian singles chart at #3!! Thanks to
our webmistress ([email protected]) for the info!

**"The Animal Song" was the most added track to radio for both American AND
Australian radio this past week!! Thanks to [email protected] (whose comment
is also in the newsletter further down) for the American info, and
[email protected] for the Australian info.

**"The Animal Song" debuted at #50 this past week in Billboard. Hopefully once
all radio stations get the song, it'll rise all the way to #1!!

         Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: This week's quessie is: How did Darren spend
his birthday this past year? The answer is: At EuroDisney in Paris! Congrats
to the only person to get it right this week:

[email protected] (Valerie, you're on a roll!)

This week's quessie is: Who came up with the idea of the "Truly" video in
Paris (Am I in a French mood or something?)?

Hey guys ! Guess what ? "Moon" 's doing pretty well in France since it's at
#7 in the Hit Machine (where the boys were already invited twice !).... but
we still haven't heard of "The Animal Song" ! People finally discover
Savage Garden. For instance, last week I went to the FNAC (one of the
biggest French CD seller after Virgin) and there were those two girls
holding "Moon" in their hands and one said to the other : "What? You never
heard of them before ? But it's one of the best NEW group in the moment !!!"
NEW ???????? They're absolutely not new since they met 7 yrs ago !!! I
think French people are quite hypocritical saying Savage Garden is a new
band ! And the same one to the same other one : "Yeah, you know : the guys
who sang "Truly something" " and then I said : "Truly Madly Deeply" and I
told them about all the ARIAs the boys won, the hits they had already had
in the charts, all the singles they've released and I simply went ... lol
... you should really have seen their faces after my saying this ! Too
funny !!!
They were just like .... "???" and I finally saw them buy 2 singles !
Well, let's talk about something else.... In April, I'll come to California
and I'd like to meet Savage Garden fans...... I'll be in San Diego and Los
Angeles, CA and also in Phoenix, AZ.... if you'd like to meet me, let's
e-mail me to [email protected]
you can also visit my site it's been updated :
http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/ayers/222/index.html
I'll stop here ! Just wanna tell everyone about how happy I feel that "The
Animal Song" 's doing soooooo pretty well in the USA ! and to be honest,
it's become one of my fave !!! See ya all next week !!!!!!

[email protected]

I'm just picturing that conversation in French... ~Lauren :o)

Lauren..
Ok, first I am so very proud of the guys, because of the major record
sales for "The Animal Song". I wanted the C.D soo bad that I had my mom
go to the store during my school hours and get it, and luckily she did
cuz' they were almost sold out..And I encourage you all to PLEASE vote
for SG on TRL..You know Total Request Live!!!! Thanks..

Just to let you know....in the U.S. it's 500,000 copies to go gold...but in
other countries it's less....that's just because the U.S. sells more
records...so the gold and platinum awards are set up depending on how big your
music industry is...does that make sense?  I hope to God so : )

Also, the video is in Medium rotation on VH1 already......and the song it self
was the most added song to the radio this past week...and (on a personal note)
the single itself is selling pretty good here despite nothing but Radio disney
playing it in NC yet.  So...who knows ? : )

[email protected]

I coulda sworn it was 70,000 - but you're right, I checked. Anyway, it does
make sense about the different numbers for gold and platinum awards in other
countries. Meanwhile, as I type this (Saturday morning), I STILL haven't seen
the video except for the one I downloaded. But that could also be because I
haven't watched VH1 as often as I should, so I'll just be quiet now. Woops! I
typed this response before I saw the video, so now I can stop complaining
because I have seen it. ~Lauren :o)

Ok I forgot to tell you this when I wrote the Fanclub thing. Here in Darwin,
on the local countdown TAS has been in the top ten all week! It's getting
heaps and heaps of requests. It's highest position has been #2 already!

but it cant have lead vocals in it.  i need a copy of the tape by march
9, that is the day i am trying out.  could you please see if anyone you
know has a copy they could send me?    thank you so much,

Lauren,

my mom took me and my little sister to see the other sister today.  it was an
awesome movie, very cute and funny.  i loved it so much!  its a wonderful
movie, and i think everyone should see it weather they like SG or not, because
i loved it.  but anyways, after the movie they were playing the song on the
credits and my mom said we could wait if i wanted to see SG come up during the
credits.  this older couple, (like maybe in their 50's...) were saying as they
left, "what are they saying in the song?, what are the words?"  and i said,
"its a savage garden song"  now i wouldnt expect them to think much, but the
woman reacted enthusiastically saying, "OH SAVAGE GARDEN!  we just bought the
cd to this movie, we LOVE savage Garden!!"  and then the woman turned to her
husband saying, "honey, this is savage garden, remember i bought you their
CD...is this song on the sound track to the movie?" and we had a short
conversation about them.  but i thought it was very cool too find out that
these older people had heard of them! i initially had thought that they would
have just shrugged, but they were VERY interested in savage garden, and the cd
and stuff.  i thought that was awesome!  what do you think?

[email protected]

That is so cool!!! What a cute story! It's so funny how older people seem to
love them as much as younger people. Which will ultimately keep them around!
Thanks for sending in this story - I loved it! ~Lauren :o)

Renny!   I have the coolest story! Ok, so, all day Sat I had been waiting and
waiting to hear TAS on the radio. So, we're on our way out to my G-ma's house
and the radio starts getting fuzzy like always cause she lives out in the
middle of nowhere. Anyway, I'm all depressed cause you can tell the radio's
about to go out and I won't hear the song when suddenly, it comes on! But
that's not half of it! The second it comes on, THE RADIO CLEARS UP! It was
PERFECT the whole time! I was so jazzed! The song played, it was beautiful of
course, then just as it ended the radio got too fuzzy to listen to anymore and
we shut it off. It was like it was just meant to be! A miracle! Anyway,
thought you'd enjoy that :) cya tmw :) enjoy tonight's ep :)

[email protected]

Side note from me: Renny is my nickname (LauREN - get it?), and "tonight's ep"
refers to The X-Files (which sucked, by the way, but I won't get into that).
With that out of the way, I'll just say that this was such a cool story and
I'm glad you told me, Kimmy! ~Lauren :o) Oh, I mean Renny :o) Or Rennita, and
any other variation of Ren that you call me :o)

This is going to be a long e-mail but the SGer was so big I have to talk.
This week's SGer was great.  I really liked the articles. Some of them were
funny.  I don't understand how you can take the time to write a letter to
someone and say"I love you" then say but your voice isn't that great or you're
not the best looking man in the world.(A blind person can see that Darren's
gorgeous.  A blind person's seeing eye dog can see that Darren's gorgeous. The
dog would run and jump to him and lick him just because he thinks that
Darren's gorgeous.) Why write it?  The one where Darren said how he felt the
first time he saw Colby's name in a paper. That was kinda sad and sweet at the
same time. I want somebody who loves me like that. You're right about the
lawsuit. It's absolutely ridiculous.  I don't think something like that would
hold up even here. (O.K. I take that back. In any other state except CA it
wouldn't hold up.) If the contract was cancelled then it was cancelled. There
is no...whatever it is they are claiming. I can't remember. They just want
some of Darren and Daniels money.  They're mad because they hit big right
after they cancelled their contract with D&D. That's what I think.  Enough of
that. I'm sure D&D are going to win the case.  This has nothing to do with
anything but I have to tell somebody.  I don't
have my own computer so I use the lab at my school.  I just figured out that I
could listen to my cd's while I'm on the internet.  I'm listening to TAS right
now.  Oh, the picture. (I think I'm turning into a stalker)  I couldn't
believe the picture. I don't know how long I stood in the store staring at it
before I bought it but my friend had to bring me out of a trance.(big swoon)
I've stared at a guy like that once before in my
entire life. Only time I'm not listening to the song or looking at the picture
is when I'm in class. It's just so beautiful! Is it wrong to already know all
the words to the song?  Hay that could be next week's quessie. Just kidding.
Speaking of the quessie.  I think,I read this a long time ago now, but I think
he either spent his birthday at home or bowling.  Bowling seems strange though
because didn't Darren say one time that he didn't like bowling?  My memory is
terrible.  anyways talk to you next week.

P.S.  I've always wanted to ask you where you got your name ImBewitchd
from?  It reminds me of that old t.v. show "Bewitched."

[email protected]

<Inserts applause here> YAY!! You figured out the meaning of my screen name!
Yeah, I got it from the old TV show "Bewitched" - I've loved it for years.
Elizabeth Montgomery was my idol until I saw "Emma" and now Gwyneth Paltrow
reigns queen. I'm a MAJOR Nick at Nite addict (TV was so much better back
then). Anyway, everyone else seems to think I practice witchcraft because of
my name. You wouldn't believe how many emails I get inviting me to a witch
chat, or people ask me how to levitate and stuff like that (sometimes, if I'm
in the mood, I'll just pretend to be a real witch and tell them all sorts of
ridiculous spells. It's so much fun, and they actually believe me!). And how
about this: A flea on a blind man's seeing dog could see that Darren is
gorgeous :) And sadly you're right about every other place in the US except CA
dismissing that lawsuit. I pity my home state :P ~Lauren :o)

Hey!

I just thought I should write and tell you about when the Animal Song is going
to be released in Canada.  It is going to hit the shelves on March 9th!
Also, the video is being played on Much Music and  the song is being played
dozens of times each day on the radio here too.  I think it might be even
bigger than Truly!  One last thing, "The Other Sister was the number 3 movie
in Canada this past weekend!  I'm sure it is because of the Animal Song, lol.

**"The Animal Song" got an awesome grade in Entertainment Weekly this week!
Here's the review, sent in by [email protected] (and a few others):

Savage Garden "The Animal Song"

We won't ask who thought it appropriate to include a tune about jungle animals
in a movie about a mildly retarded young adults ("The Other Sister"). Instead,
let's just thank the two sweet toothed Aussies of savage garden for delivering
the happiest, catchiest track of the new year.  With pounding drums and mile
high harmonies, this "song" is even more irresistible than all that "chic a
cherry cola" business...A-

Apparently EW never gives out too good of reviews, so congrats to Darren and
Daniel! But Mr. Reviewer Man, try to see if you can figure out the connection
between the song and the movie, k? Come on, even *I* figured it out (or I have
an opinion, anyway)! And sweet-toothed? I won't even go there....

**The world has spoken...hardcore fans, casual fans, critics, even Darren
himself...the majority of them agree that "The Animal Song" is the best song
Savage Garden has put forth thus far. What do YOU think? Does it have more fly
than all the previous songs, or do you remain loyal to the firsts? I'm
curious, so let me know how you feel!

That's it for this week!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
Lauren ( <A HREF="mailto: [email protected]">[email protected]</A> )

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make no money
for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty big company
like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me (especially since
you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's earnings, anyway). Besides,
my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just watched contains
real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
