The Savage Gardener #81

AHHHHH, I'm watching 20/20 (a news show) and there's some story about people
who undergo anesthesia for surgery, only they weren't given enough and wake up
to find the surgeons still working on them! That would be the ultimate horror
(especially since I have this morbid fear of needles and anything medical!)! I
have no idea why I'm telling you this since it has nothing to do with SG
whatsoever, but I figure that since I'm working on this part of the newsletter
now I just had to get this out to someone and lucky me...there just happens to
be 400 plus someones reading my terror right now :) Anyway, there's lots of
stuff this week, including a transcript of an interview with the guys on a
Brisbane radio station talking about their hair (they both had changed it
considerably, however, now it's back to the way it was before), Daniel's
"mystery girlfriend" as everyone has come to call her, and all about the video
for "The Animal Song"! Now you enjoy reading the newsletter, while I try to
squash these terrifying images of waking up in the middle of surgery out of my
head! I guess it would help to change the channel...

**I have the tracklisting to "The Animal Song" single (out February 23rd for
US residents). Unfortunately, it's not a song off the upcoming album like I
had hoped; it's the bittersweet remix for "Santa Monica" (which I already
have!!). Ah well, guess I'll have to wait for the album...

**...speaking of the album, I have a supposed RELEASE DATE!! Alrighty,
apparently the album is due either on June 29th, or sometime after. That's so
far away!!!!!!

**Also also, rumored tour date for fall of '99. However, no word on where the
tour will be.

**Here's a nice piece of info regarding how "The Animal Song" is doing here in
L.A. so far...apparently Star 98.7 (my favorite radio station, in case you
were wondering!) has been receiving TONS and TONS of requests for the song. If
this is a glimpse of the future, I'd say the song will do very well once it's
released nationally and world-wide. I originally typed this a few days ago,
but Star's DJs are absolutely eating this song up! They're going on and on
about it ("What's not to like about this song??"). If this is ANY inclination
of what's to come (because others are telling me how well-received the song
has been in their area), I'd say to expect another big hit from Savage Garden!

**Here's a hot item for you! If you go to http://members.xoom.com/sgunlimited/
you can check out pics from the set of "The Animal Song", filmed about 20
minutes away from my uncle's house which I did not realize until the filming
ended (otherwise I would have gone to visit my uncle!). Anyhoo, the pics are
AWESOME and gives a great preview of the video, which looks unlike any other
we've seen! Daniel's hair looks a tad longer, too. Enjoy!!

**Good news for Australians!! You can get "The Animal Song" single in 2 weeks.
I don't have a date yet, but as soon as I find out I'll let you know (I'm
thinking around the same time America gets it). Thanks to Sarah for the info
(who, by the way, will be back in Brisbane on Saturday so her email should be
back up by the time the weekend ends)! And also, it looks as though the areas
in Australia that have had a sneak peek at the song have been getting rave
reviews at it. It really looks as though this will be another hit for Darren
and Daniel (which I just said a little bit ago...)!

                                               Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: This week's quessie is: Which Vampire
Chronicle book is Darren's favorite? The answer would be "The Vampire Lestat"
because, as Darren said, "...unlike the first novel, it is written from the
perspective of Lestat. I hated his character in the first novel. After reading
the second I had a complete turn around and I realized that he was indeed a
beautiful soul." And I have to agree completely with him!! Anyway, congrats to
those who got it right:

I had to put this in because I thought it was funny, even though it doesn't
pertain to SG!

girl, what do you think about B*Witched stealing your name?? You ought to sue
for royality rights! ...you know now everyone's gonna think your a B* fan.
lol...   sorry had to say something. :) I'm sure this aint the first time
you've heard that. Anywayz, just wanted to say I loved this ish, and the song
is gorgeous.. thanks for the lyrics....

Keep up the good job!

[email protected]

You're right!!! I should sue them for stealing my name!! I haven't heard their
song yet, but I'll put in serious consideration for suing (we could go on
Judge Judy's show!!!!!). But they could put in the argument that they replaced
the e with a *  so they technically didn't steal my name. It's America, we
have the wildest lawsuits and every little thing counts! While I'm at it, I
could bring in the Savage Gardener, a Black Thunder driver for B105 in
Brisbane, since he stole the SGer's name!!!! But note on the lyrics: I don't
think one line of it is right. Someone told me it was "I've been having
difficulties keeping to myself", not "I don't have any difficulties...". Sorry
for the mistake! ~Lauren :o)

Here is a copy of the transcript that Darren and Daniel did in LA today.
Enjoy.

B105 Brisbane  7.06 am Friday 5 February 1999

Male Interviewer:  From LA we have Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes [then
there is a parody, the DJ sings something, lots of giggles from the
    phone line]

Darren:  Is that what you think it sounds like David?

Male interviewer:  I'm not sure, no one's heard it yet

Darren:  It sorta goes like this [(sings] and on that farm there was
pig, E-I-E-I-O!  Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree? [laughs!!]

Female interviewer: .Ahh you're still Australian through and through

Darren:  I'm really well it's good to hear you actually, I haven't been
home for a little while so it's just great to hear your voices.

    [Replying to being in LA]:

Darren:  Yeah we're just filming a video for the Animal Song, we're
just about to go back into the studio, I guess wee just been sort of
madly writing songs for the next record over the last 3 or 4 months and
we're just about to go back into the studio and commit them all to
    tape.

[Asked about how the recording process worked with them being in
    different countries]

Darren:  Well here's the deal, basically what we would do - like I went
home for a little while and we worked on some music together then I
went back to NY and he would send me zip discs - which are computer
discs of music, and we both have a hard disc recording studio in our
apartments or in our homes so I would get his music I would put my
vocals and lyrics down on it and I would send it back to him and then
he would add more music and we kept to-ing and fro-ing that disc until
we finished like a demo and we didn't actually meet up until San
Francisco in the recording studio when we recorded the song - it was
    very high tech.

Male Interviewer:  Are you happy with it?

Darren:  I love it.  It's funny I've been thinking our next record would
be all dark and mysterious and very Alanis Morrisette.  This song came
out of left field it's very happy and a very honest song and I guess a
bit how I feel at the moment.  It's very crazy, and we saw this film,
it's a Gary Marshall film called The Other Sister and we saw that about
November last year, when we were on tour in America last year they gave
us a screening of the film and it?s just the most beautiful film and
they asked us to write a song for it and that was what came of it - I
think it's the best sounding thing we've ever done, but hey I'm a
    little biased.

    [The Animal Song]

Male Interviewer:  We have the guys from LA,  Daniel Jones what'd ya
    reckon?

Daniel:  Oh yes, loads actually, did Darren explain how it was written?
[about the video]:  it's sort of like a carnival parade type of thing
it's a lot of fun, there?s a lot of different characters in it we've
got marching bands and baton twirlers, elephants - there?s about 250
people on the shoot today it's quite amazing ____________ elephants and
    koalas [cracks up laughing!].

Female interviewer:  There have been a lot of Daniel Jones sightings in
the last few months, have you been home a lot?

Daniel:  Yeah I have actually, over Christmas - I still can't beat that
place I've like been to 30 or 40 countries around the world I still
think that it's a really cool city to live in and I think when you live
there all your life sometimes you don't really get it where you're
living until you travel and you sort of understand that we've got it
    pretty good there.

Female interviewer:  So what about your mystery girlfriend you avoided
    talking about last time?

Daniel:  My mystery girlfriend?? - most people... - oh well

Male interviewer:   [Something like] How is Jonathan?

DanieI:   Jonathan?  Oh that's my brother _____ "I'm not from Tasmania"
[laughing] she's not my mystery girlfriend, I've known her for all my
life, like I went to school with her - we were in Taylor Park High
School in Grade 8 & I became good friends with her and she's got 4
brothers who I became mates with and we sort of hooked up about 4 or 5
years ago.  Yeah things are just going steady you know. [mumbled
question from male interviewer]__________ Well you see Michelle's into
that kind of thing so we can just share each other [raucous laughter]

Female Interviewer:  Is she overseas with you?

Daniel: No she's not actually she's looking after my 2 little puppies
    at home

    [ad break?]

Male interviewer:  On set of their brand new video Daniel Jones and
Darren Hayes.  Darren Hayes has your life changed much?

Darren:  Oh it has but it hasn't.  You know it's so funny.  You know I
think a lot of people assumed that you know, we've sold all these
records and then Darren goes off to America at this stage in his life -
I'm in New York and I have a very simple life, and in some ways I kinda
went there to run away from it a little bit because no one knows who I
am in America really,  I mean we've sold a few million records but hey
so has everybody else and you know I go to the grocery store, and I
take my garbage out, and I run around in my pyjamas {transcribers note:
I cannot believe he would wear pyjamas!!!!!!!!!!!!} it's just been
really relaxing.  I just have a lot of time just writing songs and
working out what this incredible journey has done to us and what we can
get from it and I have come to the conclusion that this is such a great
job and we really love making people happy and making music and when I
came home recently it was the best feeling.  Genuinely I just got
straight back into the whole song writing thing and in some ways
nothing has changed - does that make sense?

Male Interviewer:  In some ways you're not the first to run away from
    Logan mate [laughter]

Darren:  But you know what, I miss it soooo much, I'm coming home very
    soon actually, I rang my mum up - honestly I'm a vegetarian, I haven't
eaten meat for years and I ring up mum and say can you cook me a
roast??.. can you make scones??? do you want me to take you on a drive
to the Danbury Mountains?  I just really miss so much about Australia
I'll be back and I?m sure I'll be into ___ movies(?)  twenty four
    seven.

Male Interviewer:   Saying nothing's changed?. How long is it since you
    looked at your bank balance?

Darren:  Just recently ____________ [laughter].  You know Daniel made a
very good comment the other day - we managed to live 24, 25 years of
our lives skint with nothing and the last couple of years we've had
money and it could come and it could go and I know money can change
your life and money can pay bills and I'm not gonna underplay that, but
really I can't say that I am any more happier because of money, and I
know that money can go far and for every Savage Garden there's a wah
wah hee(?) and we're very aware of that our next record, we could flop
and you mightn't wanna call us up and interview us..................It
doesn't
mean anything, it's all very personal and it is
more than anything that we get paid to do something we love to do and
we're very grateful for that, but I don't think for one minute that
it's my God given right to earn this money or to be this successful
forever, you know, we just it take every day as it comes.

Male Interviewer:  [along the lines of] It's a great story that you
    have done so well

Darren:  Yeah it makes us feel good, that's the thing.  We were driving
out to this video shoot today and there's a station here called Kiss
FM(?) which is like the b105 of LA [male interviewer:  but not as good
right - that sucks?!  [Laughs]].  They are a very popular station..
and they play a merger(?) of what Kiss FM is and they played Torn and
they played Truly Madly Deeply and one other song and I think... that's
two Australian artists, this radio station is saying this is the kind
of music we play and I'm really proud of bands like Bachelor Girl
{transcribers note:  the man has good taste},
they're incredible, I went back to the guy at the Arias and said you
know you're amazing, and I'm really proud of everything we/they(?) film
and the film "Elizabeth", and I think our industry is really picking up
and you know I'm really proud to be part of that.

[played a track by Bachelor Girl]

Male interviewer:  [We played Bachelor Girl there as Darren was
raving or words to that effect].

Female Interviewer:  Darren has your image changed much with the new
    album etc?

Darren:  Do you know what?  It's so funny and I'm gonna give you the
scoop! the deal - OK, Dazma(?) - that's me, I was growing my hair out
'cos
we all know Darren, you know, sacred(?) to the hair dye bottle
[laughter] not many people are born with Jet black hair [comments and
laughter] unless you're Asian - so basically on New Year's eve I got my
hair cut in like a crew cut and I spent the last 5 or 6 weeks growing
it out and found out that I have the fantastically interesting hair
colour of mouse brown.  And I went to a hairdresser he was just going
to lighten it slightly, anyway 2 hours later, when I looked like
Ritchie Cunningham we decided that that wasn't a very good look
[Daniel: "bright red"?? laughter] - so my hair is now jet black and
short
so nothing's changed?...Daniel Jones has grown his hair, almost down to
his shoulders he looks fantastic.  He jumps into the trailer today for
the video shoot and they're styling his hair.  Suddenly I'm on the set
and everyone's saying Daniel's late, Daniel's late he's getting his
hair cut, lo and behold he walks in and he's had his hair cut so we
both look exactly the same [big laughs!!!]

[I Can't make out the end properly]......inviting them back when they
get home and lots
of laughs.   [Darren:  so many people........, .... ..I can't wait?????
thanks guys]

Wow!! Thanks SO much for this transcript!! I had heard about this interview
but didn't know all the details! I'm just trying to picture Daniel in
shoulder-length hair! But I'm not a fan of long hair on ANY guy, so it
probably wouldn't go over well with me, but it's not like my opinion counts!
It'd be interesting to see though...! And Darren with his natural color
(sorta)!! THAT'S something I'd LOVE to see! And also, if you want to actually
hear the interview, go to http://www.b105.com.au (you'll be able to figure out
where to go from there once you get to the main page - there's a direct link
to the interview. Also, this is ONLY for people with Real Audio).~Lauren :o)

definate thought on your saying how a SG fan should not feel any different
about them just because they get married or NE thing.  Yes, I can admit freely
that i was kinda hurt when i found out that Darren was married but i
eventually got over it. Now I am so happy for Darren, and that he was able to
find such a woman that gave him the influence to write the lyrics to TMD.  If
Daniel got married I would be just as happy for him too, even though my
friends would probably be alittle hurt, I'm sure they would be happy too.  The
music is the only part that really matters when you like a band..not so much
their backround.  Though i like the idea of them having a softer image than
hard-core, blood thirsty bands.  Just because they are married though doesnt
change any of the lyrics.  i think if they are happy then you should be happy
for them cause thats how a real fan should feel, and not so much resentment.

[email protected]

Definitely in total agreement! I also admit freely that I'm curious about
girlfriends and such, but it's just innocent curiosity. I just honestly don't
think about it often...why should I? I love the MUSIC, and the MUSIC FIRST!
I'll admit I went a little off when Tea Leoni married David Duchonvy a couple
years ago, but it was more that I was stunned than anything else (they did
marry VERY fast). I'm just not a fan of his anymore because he seems like such
a jerk in interviews and stuff, but I won't get into that. I also stand by the
fact that if they're happy with whoever they're with, then true fans will be
happy for them too and not hiring hitmen! ~Lauren :o)

******************************************************************************

I had to put a little clip of this response in here...

...Anways, I think people should look at Darren and Daniel as real people
who have feelings, would marry,  have kids like any one of us.  Placing all
your hopes on having the chance to be a part of their lives is just too
extreme of a dream.  I love their music very much and their physical beauty is
just a bonus. We should enjoy their music and appreciate the amazing songs
they've written.

[email protected]

That's one of the biggest differences between my fandom of SG and my previous
fandom of other stars...I understand that they're real people like you and me
(ok, real people with extraordinary talent). Of course, my own personal views
could be due to the fact that I'm matured some since first becoming a fan. In
some ways, anyway! However, just for the record...in all my entire life I've
never believed I'd marry whoever my celebrity crush was! ~Lauren :o)

The Animal Song made it's debut yesterday here in Phoenix on KZZP so if you
live in or around Phoenix and get 104.7 on your radio, vote for Savage Garden
since they're in that 'Double Play at Eight' thing where they play two new
songs and then listeners decide which they like the best-so far Savage
Garden's been winning by far!!!!!  Wahoo!!!!!!  The number to call (I have no
idea when this thing ends since I don't listen to kzzp in the evenings but
still call in and tell them what you think!!) is: (602)260-1047.  Thanks for
help keeping the Garden alive =)

Wooo!! Looks like the song is slowly making its way around! "The Animal Song"
has been doing TREMENDOUSLY well, and it hasn't even been released nationally
yet!!! I was listening to my fave station (which I've mentioned in this issue
about 50000000 times already) and one of the DJs asked his partner which SG
song she liked best. She said she couldn't decide because she loved them all,
and he said that he has a feeling this is going to be their biggest yet (even
more than "Truly"??). We'll have to see!! If this is ANY sort of hint as to
what's to come, I think it's safe to bet that 1999 will be another awesome
year for Savage Garden! ~Lauren :o)

Ok, Lauren.  I caught a little bit of "The Other Sister" commercial.  I only
saw the end of it.  So I don't know if "The Animal Song" was played on the
commercial.  Here's a funny story.  I was driving in my car and happened to a
notice a license plate.  I tell you, I have Savage Garden on the brain.  It
was AAM and then some numbers.  I was thinking  hey!  All Around Me!  LOL  I'm
so so bad!  LOL  Then it gave me an idea.  I was thinking it would be cool to
actually have a SG license plate!   LOL  My husband would have a fit!  LOL
I'm still waiting for bumper stickers!!  Have a great day!!!!  I'm glad you're
not leaving the newsletter!  WE NEED YOU!!!!  I always look forward to your
newsletter!

[email protected]

An SG license plate!! My parents and brother used to go to the Los Angeles
airport just to watch the planes take off (don't ask, I think it's insane
too!) and I went one time because sometimes I feel like going into LA. Anyway,
we were parked behind a van that had the license plate "SAVAGE"! I thought
that was so cool! Actually, when you join the SG Fanzine they send you a
couple bumper stickers (my fave: "...sweet like a chic-a-cherry cola"). And
I'm glad you look forward to the newsletter :)  You've been supporting me for
as long as I can remember. Thanks for everything! ~Lauren :o)

**Darren did an interview with a radio station here in LA (the ONLY station so
far to have gotten "The Animal Song") and talked about the video when Ryan
(the coolest DJ to ever have graced the airwaves!) asked him who his favorite
stalker is! He said it was a woman who believes the two of them were witches
in past lives and their destiny is to burn together on stakes to save
themselves for the millenium!!!! Can you believe that?! I'd be pretty
freaked...somebody lock Darren up on Dec. 31, 1999 so that woman can't get to
him!!! Anyway, this was a little story I thought you'd like to hear (and if
you ARE that woman...I'd suggest seeing a psychologist!)! But Ryan and Lisa
were right...it'd make a pretty cool TV show!

**As far as I can tell, "The Animal Song" is being EXTREMELY well-received by
the radio stations that have it. I've had so many people tell me that the song
is winning "battle of the new songs" contests ALL the time, and many nights in
a row. This is a good sign! I personally think the song will really start to
go once "The Other Sister" is released to theaters. It seems like a lot of
songs written for movies (when released before the movie's release) get a
major boost once the movie's released. The perfect example is "My Heart Will
Go On". I must have been the ONLY person in the country who loved that song
before "Titanic" was released. It was barely heard on the radio, but once
"Titanic" hit theaters, well...now millions of people will go on a killing
spree if they hear it one more time (myself included!). Anyway, my point is,
once "Titanic" was released, millions of people understood "My Heart Will Go
On" more. But "Animal" is doing pretty darn well on its own!

**I've noticed on a newer commercial for "The Other Sister" that the two main
characters, Carla and Daniel, are dressed in animal costumes. Coincidence?

That's it for this week! I'm just loving how full the SGer has been lately! I
know what awesome song I have to thank for that! Anyway, I'll be in agony
until Sunday waiting to see what will become of the dastardly evil Alex Krycek
on my fave show of all time (X-Files!!). They're not calling it the
Valentine's Day Massacre for nothing!! I'm actually running a pool to bet on
who's getting the cut. So if I mean anything to you, just light a candle in
hopes that Krycek won't kick the bucket. Don't you love how I ramble on about
things that aren't relevent to SG whatsoever...? Oh, and...

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!!!

I'm sure you'll all be doing what I'm going to do (put the CD player on repeat
and listen to "Truly" all day). And maybe watch a movie or 8 (I love movies!).
Have an awesome week!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
