The Savage Gardener #78

Yay, I'm not insane! I had a truckload of "You're not insane, Lauren!"
(referring to my sealing away $20 for the new SG album). In fact, another SGer
reader did the same thing. [email protected], you rock! I did have someone
call me something else: "You're not insane, just amusing." That makes me feel
better! I actully have a better idea - I'll just start charging you each a $1
an issue! Naaa, I couldn't do that, I'd lose all my subscribers! Well, all but
Rob...he's the one person I could convince to pay me!! I also had heaps of
people send me the Red Edge pic - now I have more copies than I know what to
do with! But that's cool, now I'll always have a backup in case the other
43398372004854922705484082163805803850332085 copies get lost! Ok, so I'm
exaggerating a bit...I wonder how exactly you'd read that number...ah well.
Thanks to all who sent it to me, and for telling me I'm not crazy for locking
away money for the new SG CD!

**Some news from [email protected] for Canadian fans and a few American
ones who get Much Music: "MuchMusic is airing the #1
Hit Weekend for 6 hrs. starting at 9 am I think? on the 23 and 34 of
January. PLEASE put that in the next sg'er or many MANY people will miss
it!! Savage Garden has a 100% potential (whatever!! I don't think that
was correct!! haha) of being played on it!!". Thanks, Erika!

**For those of you with $813.00 lying around, you have a chance to own the
ULTIMATE Savage Garden merchandise. Talk show queen Rosie O'Donnell (who is
obviously THE biggest celebrity SG fan I've ever seen, and I've seen lots), is
putting up the gold record she received from the guys 2 years ago for auction
at www.ebay.com. She's putting up tons and tons of stuff, and so far the gold
record has no bidders since the price was raised. She had the gold record on
her desk throughout the show and said "I hope the guys from Savage Garden
don't get mad!". I did realize something though - she kept the triple platinum
award! Hey! My sister has almost $1000 in her bank account...someone remind me
to be nice to her for once! Or I could just get down on my knees and pray that
Mom wins the lottery! Or marry a rich guy by tomorrow...discover how the
Egyptians built the pyramids...make contact with aliens...cure cancer...

                                            Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: What 4 songs did Savage perform for the
record companies in America? The answers are: "Truly Madly Deeply", "To the
Moon and Back" (the song that they feel got them the record deal, remember?),
"Universe", and "Santa Monica". Lots of you were VERY close, just missing one
song. But anyhoo, congrats to the ONLY person to get all 4 songs right:

[email protected]

This week's quessie is: How did Daniel's brother discover that Daniel was
playing with his drum set when he wasn't allowed to?

More from Sam...

Hey, what's up in France this week ?! I can't believe this....Savage Garden is
everywhere on the radio !!!
The morning when I go to University by bus, I heard 4 times "Truly" this week.
When I'm having lunch, I always turn the radio on and guess ? twice "Moon". In
the evening, when I'm doing my homeworks, there's music, too and ...
"Truly" was played 3 times.
When I came back home by bus on Monday evening, guess what they played ?
Yeah : "Moon"...
So, what's up in France ? Have they finally woken up ???!!! But, wait, there's
more !
In Germany they still play "Truly" and "Moon" a lot ! BUT they also play
"Break me shake me" and even "Tears of Pearls" !!!

So, Europe seems to finally have discovered how Savage Garden talented are...

Isn't this news good for us, Europeans ? Perhaps will they finally tour
Europe in 1999... If anyone happens to get European news (articles in mags,
releases,...) please, let me know at [email protected]

This is a good idea! I'll put Sam's offers in here for a test run so I can see
how many/if any people respond. If he gets a lot of offers, I'll open this as
a new section. ~Lauren :o)

I noticed in the last issue when you stated how pop is making a comeback, and
it made me think. You said that  a few years ago it was mainly alternative,
and I'm sure you meant bands like Nirvana. This doesnt have a whole lot to do
with that comment, but I just wanted to say something thats a bit interesting;

I've realized that Savage Garden is really the only pop band right now that I
like. Of course, I dont consider them mainstream pop, musically anyway they
are superior. But I cant help but notice when asked to name my favorite bands
when I say things like "Cold, God Lives Underwater, Sisters Of Mercy, Bush,
Marylin Manson and Savage Garden" the looks I get. Of course there are some
other pop groups I do like, like Natalie Imbruglia and The Goo Goo Dolls
(though Im not sure of they are considered pop per sae), but I guess it goes
to show how SG transcends musical genre lables, like 'pop'. When I think of
pop, I personally think of acts like Spice Girls, Hanson, bsb and all their,
um, predecessors. Basically, the point of all this rambling is that I am not a
pop fan, but I am a Savage Garden fan, which to me proves their power to cross
over. Most of my friends are also alternative fans, and yet they like Savage
Garden as well. It says a lot, doesnt it?

Ok, I'm done, keep up the good work Lauren, your doing an awesome job.

[email protected]

I am sooo glad you sent this in! Nirvana actually did come to mind when I was
thinking about how it was mainly alternative a few years back. But anyhoo,
when I think of pop, I also think of the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Hanson,
etc. (all of whom I'm not too fond of). I've gotten really into Natalie
Imbruglia and Jewel lately, but that's really the only pop artists I like,
along with Savage, of course. I definitely don't consider Savage Garden
mainstream pop at all. If people would actually listen to the entire CD,
they'd see that it's impossible to categorize because the sounds are so
different from one song to the next. A couple months ago I did a little search
on AOL's member directory and typed in "male" and "Savage Garden" to see what
I'd get. Every single one I found were fans of Savage, and they were grouped
among bands like the ones you listed. That has to say something, doesn't it?
Thanks for your great comment! ~Lauren :o)

A lot of you have been emailing me asking what happened to Nikki, the woman
who was offering to tape the interview on VH1 with Darren the night of the
Billboard Awards. Her email address is down at the moment, and she has been
very busy lately, so she's handed the project over to her sister...

Hi! My name is Lari Lewis, Nikki's older, and much wiser sister!  She here has
ever so graciously let me take over her video orders! Good News for those of
you who missed the VH1 Pre-Show and Billboard Music Awards, I can make you a
copy for a small price..and I do mean small! Or...we could swap videos and
audio tapes, which means, you pay to send me anything, and I pay to send you
anything, including overseas prices!

For those of you who would like to purchase a SG Video, I figured the cost of
all the purchases I will need to make to send you Savagers out there a copy
would only be $6.50 ($2.50 for the Video Tape, $3.00 for postage, and $1.00
for a padded envelope (*to ensure your tape will not arrive damaged*) Tell me
that isn't cheap for a video...if you do, I am going to have to say you are
crazy! (Sorry, in my eyes, it's pretty non-expensive)

As an added bonus, if you would like a copy of a few Ultra Rare tracks
straight from Japan, check this out:

Truly, Madly, Deeply - Ultra Rare Tracks

Mine
All Around Me
Truly, Madly, Deeply (Album Version)
Fire Inside the Man
I'll be He was Cool
I Want You (Xeno Mania Punky Mix)
Love Can Move You
This Side of Me
Memories are Designed to Fade
To the Moon & Back (Hani Num's Radio Edit Mix)
Santa Monica (Bittersweet Mix)
Break Me, Shake Me (Acoustic Version Live)
I Want You (Acoustic Version Live)
Truly, Madly, Deeply (Dub Mix)
Truly, Madly, Deeply (Aussie Version)

If you would like a copy of this tape, all you do is add $2.50 to your
purchase for a total of $9.00, and that is not a lot.

I sent out this letter to the Savage Gardener saying that I would not charge
for the tape, but so far, 26 people want the Video, and the Audio Tape, which
I do not mind doing at all, because I think that if you are a SG Fan you
should have a copy of the tape, but my funding to get these to everyone is
draining me! Keep in mind that I will not be doing the recording from my home,
I am taking it to a professional recording and art studio to do the work
called Dreamworks Ltd. (I own this company outside of my original job.) If you
would like a copy of the tape, send an email to
[email protected] and I will give you a mailing address to
send the order to. Please do not send checks. I will accept Money Orders or
Cash only!

**Here's something that's been bugging me for a while, but I never brought up.
This has been asked and asked and asked a bajillion times, and Darren and
Daniel have answered and answered and answered even more times, but I still
don't know the REAL story because I've heard so many different versions!
Anyway, this is in regard to the truth behind "chic-a-cherry cola". What's the
real story: Did Darren just simply make it up? Or was it originally "sweet
like a drink of cherry cola" and when they were recording/rehearsing/whatever,
he stuttered and sang "chic-a-cherry", which the people who were around loved
and told him to leave it like that? Anyone have the REAL answer?

That's it for this week! My finals for school start next Thursday (eeek! I
hate this time of year!), so I *may* be a little busier than usual. So if I
don't get around to answering email or whatever, you'll know why. In the
meantime, catch ya next week!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
