I'm either a year behind everyone else or the weeks of staying up till
all
hours of the morning every night has finally gotten to me! In last
week's
issue, I said 1998 was an hour and half away. Obviously I meant 1999.
It
always takes me till mid February to get used to it. And I never make
any New
Year's Resolutions...I always forget them by mid January! Anyhoo, welcome
to
the last year of the millennium (or is 2000 the last? I always hear
two
different things...) and the first Savage Gardener of the year!

**The Billboard charts had their own Top 10 selected by their various
editors
this week. Savage Garden was chosen for Best Live Performance by the
radio
editor, with this quote: "With elements of Madonna and Liza Minelli
amid his
own liberating sense of live artistry, lead Darren Hayes renews the
spectacle
of pop music come to life." How about that?! Looks like Darren's charm
certainly hasn't gone unnoticed in the Billboard staff's eyes (well,
the radio
editor anyway). And hey, while I'm at it, who can forget the charm
of Daniel
bouncing around the stage with his guitar? Now THAT'S fun to watch!
Anyhoo,
thanks to my awesome friend Rob ([email protected]) for the info!
**"To the Moon and Back" scored at #3 in the guys' hometown of Brisbane
on
B105 in the top 104 songs of '98. Wasn't it released in '96??
**Those living in the UK will be in for a treat on February 5th! There
will be
a book released by Matthew Reid that's all about Savage Garden (note:
this is
NOT the one released in Australia). You can look for it yourself at
http://www.amazon.com.uk. Thanks to [email protected] for the
find!

Savage Trivia
Last week's trivia question was: In the Australian "Truly Madly Deeply"
video,
there are 2 people that appear in it that are of a special relation
to Darren.
Who are they (as in, which people are they in the video?), and what
is their
relation to Darren? The answers are: The older man with the beard is
Robert
Hayes, Darren's father. The little blonde girl who appears with Mr.
Hayes
towards the end of the song is Darren's neice, whose name is Sara.
I must be
the last person in the world to know this because I only found out
a couple
weeks ago! And this is the most people who've gotten it right in a
loooong
time! But then again, I was the last person to hear the "I love you"
in
"Truly", so I'm not surprised! Anyways, congrats to those who got it
right:

Hey Lauren!!!!!!
I don't know if you remember me but I am part of your Savage Gardener.
I just
received my Fanzine two days ago and I have VERY exciting news.....for
me
anyways. If you look under the competition winners at the very beginning
and
if you look under the winners of the Universe singles you will
see my name!
My name is Ane, from USA! I was so excited I freaked out and even though
I
haven't recieved it yet I should tommorow or a couple of days later.
I thought
I should tell you this because your newsletter really helped me win
that
single because your letter is loaded with information! I really appreciate
it!
Thanks!
Wow!!! That is SO cool!!!!! Congratulations! And you think the newsletter
really helped you win it? That's one of the best things someone has
ever said
to me! ~Lauren :o)

I'm sure at least some of the newletter's readers know about ebay.com
by now,
but for those who might not, a brief explanation: eBay (http://www.ebay.com)
is a website (duh = ) ) that holds auctions over the Internet. It's
open to
anyone in the world, all you have to do is register (for free) at
http://pages.ebay.com/aw/registration-show.html. [Note: You have to
be 18 to
register.] Anyway, you can put items up for auction or make bids
for the
someone else's items ... and right now there are approximately 37 items
pertaining to Savage Garden that are up for grabs. One of them is an
autographed item which I'm sure many of you would like to get your
hands on.
Copies of the Video Collection and hard-to-find CDs are available as
well.
Hope this helps some of you add to your SG collections.... Best wishes
for a
great New Year!
Just one comment here: Sigh...you have to be 18 to do everything! Ok,
I lied,
mre comments: I checked out the site and noticed that they have the
Australian
"I Want You" single! I've been told that's a collector's item now,
so whoever
gets that is very lucky! ~Lauren :o)

Hey Lauren !
I didn't see it in the SG-er, so I don't know if you know, but on Mtv's
Total
Request countdown "Truly, Madly, Deeply" was at # 39, and on VH1's
top 50
countdown of songs with most airplay they were #7 ! They did this 5
facts
thing too on Savage Garden and Darren told a story about when he had
to change
his pants or something during a show and he just couldn't get the zip
up and
he had to go on stage and explain that to 5,000 people, the way he
said it was
just hilarious, I was rolling ! And Daniel told that he and Darren
both bought
Michael Jackson's Thriller as their first single they ever bought and
that
they actually bought it in the exact same store. I thought that was
kinda
interesting. The other facts were just the usual things, like that
they got
their name from Anne Rice's books, stuff everybody already knows !
Anyway,
just thought you might wanted to know... I'll go check on the Dutch
charts
soon, they had this top 100 for '98 too, I'll see if I can find anything
on
it. Oh, and Happy New Year !!! Oh, and one more thing before I let
you go :
Did you ever notice in the Tears of Pearls video that Daniel smokes
? :)
The zipper story is one of my favorites! I also love the one about both
Darren
AND Daniel falling off the stage at that very same concert! And then
Darren
falling off again the next night! Just once I'd like to hear an interview
that
doesn't have the same things we've heard a million times over! And
I've
actually known that Daniel smokes since I first became a fan. When
I was at
the Universal Citywalk in Hollywood the summer of '97 when they performed
there, Daniel walked to the stage smoking. I even have it on tape!
Let's just
hope he gives it up...I don't exactly want to wake up in the morning
years
from now and read in the newspaper that the great musician Daniel Jones
died
of lung cancer! ~Lauren :o(

Lauren,
Boy do I have a problem. My band and I are going to be
playing "Break me
Shake me" for a 'Battle of the Band" contest. The
only problem is that our
guitarists have no idea how to play the chords. We need the sheet
music .
I'm having no luck finding them. (Thank god our drummer and keyboardist
play
by ear ) If you know anybody that has them or knows where to find them
please
email me ASAP. It's in less then 3 months and the guys really
need the
music(it's either we get the music to this or I'm singing what our
bassist
wants and I don't think I want that.) Even if it's not "break
me shake me" we
will do:
All around me
I'll bet he was cool
Violet
I want you
If anybody knows this music or has any idea where i can get it email
me at
[email protected]
******************************************************************************
*******************
On the Z Top 95 of 98, Break Me Shake Me hit (unintentional pun, ok?)
#59, not
too bad but not great considering how high it climbed on most charts,
and
Truly Madly Deeply... #3!!! Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On was at
#1 and
Aerosmiths' I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing was #2 of 98! For me those songs
don't
count because 1. they didn't write it (I heard an old COUNTRY I Don't
Wanna
Miss A Thing on another station!! exactly the same song only by a different
artist!) and 2. they're big cause they're from huge movies! And of
course, I
mean HUGE!!
About titanic things and best box-office hits! But Truly didn't need
a movie
to do what it did. The guys beat out fellow Aussie Natalie Imbruglia's
Torn-
she was about the third to do that one! Well, it's been an awesome
year for
the guys, again (I mean last year of course!!). Savage Garden was nominated
for Song of 98 on Z and got REALLY close to it!! To me, Truly is the
song of
the...um... decade? Well, song of 98, anyway. And I'm sure there are
more yet
to come from our dear Aussies!! Oh, and 'The Best of the Boys: Cool
Facts
About the 35 Hottest Guys' IS available in Canada, or at least on the
West
Coast, because I saw it in Coles bookstore (at Capilano Mall). The
pic of SG
is old but *nice*!! :) Well that's it for now! Happy New Year and best
wishes
to you, Lauren!!
Now I'm surprised. "My Heart Will Go On" was huge a year ago, but it
disappeared so fast from radio that even I was surprised (I'm not exactly
a
"Titanic" fan), yet "Truly" is STILL being heard continuously today,
at least
around here it is. And as for "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing", I'm REALLY
surprised at that because it also was a huge for a few months, but
now it's
practically vanished from radio. Sheesh, let me take over radio. I'll
put them
in their place! ~Lauren :o) <~~still wishing "Break Me" would
have been
released in America
******************************************************************************
*******************
Please put this in the next SGer. Thanks.
You know, this may sound TOTALLY selfish to you, but when I heard Savage
Garden had released the song Truly Madly Deeply I was a little hurt...Not
so
much for myself, but because I did not want such a beautiful song picked
apart
by critics who are about as deep as Mariah Carey! (but the way I am
SOOOO
happy that SG and that little....uh...BEEP...are indeed not doing a
song
together!) However it turned out that TMD was a big hit for SG and
really put
them over the top. That's really great and all but....I don't know....I
cant
help but wonder...DOES DARREN EVER FEEL LIKE HIS BEAUTIFUL SONGS AND
HIS
FEELINGS ARE BEING COMMERCIALIZED???? I mean...I think about it....
That's
what happened to Alanis Morissette...think about it...her lyrics are
very
poetic and brilliant, but people just keep blowing her off and knocking
her....what do you guys think about this in relation to Savage Garden?
email
me with your opinion at [email protected]
The first thing that caught my attention was this "DOES DARREN EVER
FEEL LIKE
HIS BEAUTIFUL SONGS AND HIS FEELINGS ARE BEING COMMERCIALIZED????"
Not about
the songs, but DARREN's songs. I can't tell you all how much it offends
me
when people refer to Savage Garden's songs as Darren's songs, as if
one guy
does it. They are Savage Garden's songs, Darren and Daniel's songs.
Daniel is
a major major part of these songs, and I'm surprised that any fan would
think
otherwise. Darren does the lyrics, but Daniel does the music. I've
actually
always been more of a music person, so Daniel's work just means all
the more
to me. He has an extraordinarily rare talent (as does Darren, which
is why
they're so awesome together); he speaks to us through his music. They
balance
each other out, so they should never be treated like one is more important
than the other (I'd feel the same way if she had said "Daniel's songs"
too!).
I just had to get that out, and I'll defend it forever. Regarding the
true
reason for your email, anyone with opinions to what Meghan said should
email
HER and NOT me. Any opinions regarding what I said should obviously
be
directed to me. ~Lauren :o)

Special Savage Section
Well, with my one-year anniversary of doing the Savage Gardener finally
here
on Saturday, I figure it's the best time to acknowledge a few important
people. There are quite a lot of people that have been such a great
help to
me. So in this issue I've included a special note to these wonderful
people.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First and foremost, I have to thank the two original founding fathers
of the
Savage Gardener - Justin ([email protected]) and Kyle. Without the
two of
them, there would never have been a Savage Gardener!
Next is the second person to get behind the SGer - Andrea ([email protected]).
For a reason I still don't know, she asked me to take over the SGer
for her
when she couldn't continue with it anymore. I'm so grateful to you,
Andrea!
The third person is the person who I owe a vast majority of the SGer's
internet publicity to. By designing an awesome website and even managing
to
get it on Sony's official Savage Garden site (that is, until they decided
to
pull off unofficial sites!), Sarah ([email protected]) has gotten
many
new subscribers. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your taking
so much
time to do the site, Sarah!
These are the three main thank yous I wanted to do. I also want to thank
those
who like the SGer enough to tell others about it, and those who advertise
the
SGer on their sites, especially Rob ([email protected]), whose done
way more
promotion than I deserve! You're awesome, buddy!
Also, thanks to those of you who have ever taken the time to tell me
how much
you enjoy reading the SGer. I'll admit that there are times when I
get so
frustrated I want to quit (I'm not exactly the most patient person,
hehe), but
feels so good to know I'm helping people and that they enjoy what I
do (I
know...it sounds so cliche. I'm sorry!). I don't think you have any
idea how
much even a casual "Good job on the SGer" can mean to me.
Finally, a major thank you to a special young woman out there who did
something so wonderful for me, nothing I can do can ever repay her.
You know
who you are, and I'll be forever grateful.
Oh yeah, and of course, the two awesome Aussies for whom this newsletter
is
all about. They're something I can finally be proud about! They'll
be heroes
to me forever.
Alrighty, I'm sure you're bored with this - it's not like I'm accepting
an
Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay or something! But anyway,
one
more...
THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!!

**Check out another Savage site:
http://welcome.to/savagemadness
**It's been brought to my attention that the newsletter has been recently
starting to be cut off. In other words, abruptly stops in the middle
of the
newsletter. The first person to tell me this was Sarah, the webmistress
of the
SGer's site, but for some odd reason the Savage Gardener was complete,
yet my
person emails to her were cut off. I finally had to get a Hotmail account
just
so I could email her. This only happens with people who are NOT on
America
Online, so those who have internet addresses, let me know if this starts
happening to you. If I get enough complaints or it lasts a certain
amount of
time, I'll have to start sending it from my Hotmail account (which
I wouldn't
like because I couldn't do my cool colors and different sized font!).
Anyway,
I contacted AOL about this problem but they never replied. So I'll
just keep
bugging them until they fix it. I'm good at that :) I'm sorry
for any
inconvenience the cut-offs have been, but since it's pointless to re-send
the
newsletter to those it has affected since the problem with Sarah was
never
fixed, if it's important you can always check out the issue on the
SGer's
site, which is always listed at the end of the newsletter. Sarah usually
has
it on the site within a few days of the original sending.
That's it for this week! Have a great Savage week, and thanks again
to all
those who've helped me and the SGer!!
Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
