The Savage Gardener #75
1998 is just an hour and a half away here in California, and my own
year of
doing the Savage Gardener is just 9 days away! Anyhoo, on with the
very last
Savage Gardener of 1998 (well, for me!).

**The guys make an appearance in Metal Edge magazine! I have NO idea
why, but
they're there, according to [email protected]. They're in the latest
issue,
whichever month that is!! Thanks for the info, Dawn!
**Billboard is holding the 1998 Best in Music categories and Savage
Garden is
nominated for Hot 100 Single of the Year and Hot 200 Album of the Year.
Go
to....
http://www.billboard.com/yearend/1998/voting.asp
and make our boys #1 for 1998!! Voting results will be posted Monday,
January
4th so vote now!!
**There's another year-end Top 100 countdown and "To the Moon and Back"
came
in at #60. Thanks to [email protected] for the info!!
**The top half of the Rick Dees Top 98 of 98 countdown aired this weekend
with
"Truly Madly Deeply" coming in at #4. Congrats, guys!!
Note: All the following news is taken from the most recent issue of
The
Official Savage Garden Fanzine. And if you don't get the Fanzine, get
it! It's
WAY more than worth it!
**The latest Fanzine reached America on Christmas Eve, and it was full
of new
stuff, including the fact that the rumor about the guys doing a duet
with
Mariah Carey is indeed actually false. And of course, I feel guilty
because I
was told it was true wayyyy back! That's the last time I get info from
this
particular place :P But I know this will make a LOT of you very
happy!
**It sounds to me like we should be saying goodbye to the backup band
consisting of Karl Lewis, Ben Carey, Lee Novak, Anna Maria Laspina,
and Nicole
McIntyre. At least, this is the message I got from the Fanzine. Anna's
in New
York at the moment and has just signed a deal with Sony. She's been
songwriting for a while and according to Darren, we should be hearing
from her
next year. As for the rest, Daniel commented that they have "managed
to pursue
some of their own dreams and aspirations". I don't know about the rest
of you,
but I'm sad! I absolutely LOVED this backing band. I wasn't into the
previous
one at all but really loved this group of people, especially Anna.
She seemed
to be really fun. Anyway, if the impression I got is correct, best
of luck to
the backup band in all that they do in the future! We'll miss you!

Savage Trivia
Last week's trivia question was: What world-famous southern California
attraction were Darren and Daniel on their way back from when they
heard "I
Want You" on the radio for the first time in the States? That would
be...Disneyland! Now on that day I KNOW it was the Happiest Place on
Earth!!
Anyhoo, congrats to those who have it right!

This week's quessie is: In the Australian "Truly Madly Deeply" video,
there
are 2 people that appear in it that are of a special relation to Darren.
Who
are they (as in, which people are they in the video?), and what is
their
relation to Darren?

I called a radio station here in Vancouver, and they have been playing
Tears
of Pearls... so I asked the radio DJ if TOP was released as a single
in
Canada...and he said that SG has indeed released it officially as a
single.
Although I would have to assume they've released it as a radio single
only
because I definately haven't seen any copies of TOP singles in record
stores.
I also asked the DJ why they were the only radio station in Vancouver
to be
playing TOP .. and he mentioned that the other radio stations may think
the
album is already too old and there have been enough singles from it
... so
they are waiting for new material from the new album they're working
on. That
really sucks because I think they should at least give TOP a
chance instead
of not playing it at all! Well at least there is one station with some
taste
:)

HI Lauren !
I wish you all the best for 1999 !!! You're really doing a Great work
on the
SGer !
Well, here are some European news :
- Tears of Pearls has been released in Switzerland. You can order it
at
http://www.planete-laser.com (about $10)
- "Moon" is really broadcasted in France (especially on RTL2) and in
Germany
(RPR1 and Radio Salü). Does it mean that the single should be
out soon ? LOL
- "Truly" is still played on French radios as one of the best (even
THE
best) love song of 1998.
- The clip of "Moon" is even played on the French TV on M6 in the "Boulevard
des clips"
A "money" question : what do you think of this : when the album 1st
came out
in 1997 it costed just 89FF (anyway, that's what I paid for it !) and
now
they're worldwide known, their same album is sold at 144 FF (that's
quite the
DOUBLE !!!). Is it the consequence of their success or just a Sony
strategy to
make benefit ?
Another quessie : what's that "Truly" CD with 14 tracks on it and with
lots of
LIVEs ? I found it on a French site (http://www.fnac.fr) It costs 259
FF. Its
release is planned for January 12th !
Well, and now, if any of the SGer reader has CDs to trade with me, videos
to
trade or articles to make copies of, let me know at :
[email protected]
( for information, I've 2 German BMSM, the Japanese BMSM and Universe
to trade
! )
I've updated my site ! Check it out at
http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/ayers/222/index.html
Wow! Lotsa news from the French part of Savage Garden fandom! Alrighty,
to
address the questions!
1) Thank you very much for the kind words on the SGer! It really does
mean a
lot to have people say that! And best wishes to you too for '99!
2) The "Moon" single has been re-released in the UK, so I would imagine
that
it'd be available in the rest of Europe too, but guess not. So far
I haven't
heard anything on the release of the single, and since the guys have
just re-
released "I Want You", I wouldn't expect one.
3) The money question! Actually, I think that it's because the album
has been
out for quite a while and that's why the price has gone up. I don't
know about
France, but here in America they ALWAYS do that. Once an album has
been out
for a while, the special sale prices they offer at the release (especially
if
it's a hit) goes up. In fact, here where I live the album is selling
at major
music stores for about $18 now, whereas when I bought it I got it for
$12.99
(YES, I know the price! For some reason it's just stuck with me all
this
time)! But then again, as I type this I FINALLY bought a replacement
original
album since my other one is sealed away because it's autographed. And
I got it
for about $12.40 because the store was having a sale on all music!
I've been
living off imports this entire time :)
4) That special "Truly" CD is a Japanese release that contains a couple
remixes, a couple live acoustic versions, and all the B-sides EXCEPT
"Mine"
(big shock!). It's an awesome CD, contains the rare "Fire Inside the
Man"
track, and is TOTALLY worth the buy.
Alrighty, hope this helped you! ~Lauren :o)

Hey Lauren! Just wanted to let you know that Savage Garden landed
and #3 on
z100 radio stations top 100 of the year!!!
I'm not surprised! I'd expect "Truly" to be very high on the charts
this year!

Hi Lauren-
I have some SG news that you might want to put in your next
newsletter!
OK, I live in New York, and we have these 2 radio stations here,
Z100 (WHTZ) and WPLJ. They just had a countdown of the years
best songs.
So, from Z100 (Top100), SG got placed 2 times, #65 for TTMAB,
and #3 for
TMD, and from WPLJ (Top 40, this is only from what i heard b/c I didn't
listen to the whole thing for this one), #4 for TMD.
So, I just wanted to help you out a little, but if you don't want
to use it, it's ok.
Some more year-end stats from New York! Thanks, Candice! ~Lauren :o)

Hi !
Well, honestly, I have no idea how to start :)
I got my fingers on a ' quote compiler ' several weeeks ago and sincethen
I
tried to put some Savage Garden quotes in. Well, unfortunately I had
to
discover that I can't read/hear/watch every interview they gave :(
That's why I'm asking you to help me out and send me (dip-
[email protected]) you favourite ( or more, well , probably not
more than
5, please :] ) savage quote so I can include it :) Thanks :)

Hi Lauren! please include this in the next issue of the Savage
Gardener!!
Well all these Song of 1998 things are going on all over the place,
and for
Vancouverites (Canada) there is, among others, the Z95.3 chart.Today,
Sunday
the 27, Savage Garden is so far among the top songs with Truly Madly
Deeply,
maybe even in the very lead! Its close competitors are, Brandy and
Monica
catfighting in 'The Boy is Mine', a Madonna song I think, 'My Heart
Will Go
On' as well, vocalized by Celine Dion, Natalie Imbruglia's version
of 'Torn',
and a few others. This is after
ONE weekend of voting!! Savage Garden is mentioned many times on the
website,
and is first in the list in one part. They also hit two higher than
I Want You
did last year on the Rick Dees chart at number 4!!! While 'Moon' hung
at #61.
Truly is also I believe one of the nominees (if there are actual nominations)
for Song of 1998 on MuchMusic, and a short clip (like a millisecond!!)
of
their American Truly video is shown in the ad on Much for the countdown.
The Z
chart is being aired on New
Year's Eve and Day @ 12 noon, and the MuchMusic countdown is being
aired on
New Year's Eve, I believe, but I'm not positively sure. So Savage Garden
is
doing very VERY well this year!!! We all help to keep them going strong!!
Wish
Savage Garden all the best in the New Year. Happy New Year, all!!

by an SGer

alike. For more info, just check out the website:
