The Savage Gardener #73

Wow!! I was stunned and pleased at how many people voted for the Ultimate
Savage Song Awards thingy!! And I had no idea how well it would go over with
you all! On Friday night, I spent 3 and a half hours just sorting through it
all!! I didn't anticipate how much work it would take, but hey - it was well
worth it from reading the comments about how many of you enjoyed it!! So
anyhoo, the results are listed towards the end of the newsletter in a special
Savage Gardener section, along with the ones I voted for because I was asked
to tell which ones I voted for. Thanks to the tons of you who voted!! I
appreciate it!!

                                                 Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: What city was the new "To the Moon and Back"
video shown, when, and where? The answer is...the video was shot in New York
City (just as I had guessed!) because the buildings gave it a "to the moon
feel". The video was filmed on Easter Sunday 1998 night because that was the
only night that there'd be a full moon. Congrats to those who got it right,
and thanks again to [email protected] for the info!!

This week's quessie is: This one is so easy, I'm ashamed! I'm running low on
trivia questions. Hey! It's not my fault! I've been doing this newsletter for
almost a year now! Anyhoo, when Daniel gets bored with someone, he flicks them
away like an insect. What's that nicknamed? <hides face in shame for how easy
this question is>.

Well! For those of you who are desperate to find a copy of the VH1 pre-show
(such as Ms. BSBLuv1985 up there!), you have an angel on Earth! Actually, she
is one anyway because she's such a cool friend! Anyhoo, here's why:

For those of you who missed the Billboard Awards and VH1 Pre-show, email me at
[email protected] and I will be glad to send you a copy of the tape. I
don't charge anyone because if you are a Savage Garden Fan, (like me) then you
deserve to have a copy of the tape!(and if you send any money..be expected to
recieve it back in your package!)

I was so impressed when I read this!! Thanks a lot, Nikki! This is REALLY nice
of you! ~Lauren :o)

You know - Memories are Designed to Fade - its original title was Strange Days
because it was based on the movie.  I haven't seen it (yet) myself but my
friend was telling me all about it and how there is one part, when two
characters are talking/yelling and its almost word for word for MADTF.  So,
when you nominate it for intricate lyrics - its not even entirely Daz's work!

[email protected]

Well look at that! That's an interesting fact! You do realize that now I have
to go rent the movie, don't you? Thanks for the info!!! ~Lauren :o)

ok, I was watching the U2 special on VH1 the other night. It might have been
the Behind the Music thing and i noticed something that i think all U2/SG fans
will notice.  If you went to any Savage Garden Concerts or saw them perform in
any way and you watch Bono perform youll notice that Darren and Bono move in
the same fashion.  I think that Darren is modelling his sexy dancing and stuff
after him cause i couldnt believe the comparison, it was as if you were
watching Darren while watching Bono, if that makes any sense.

well i just thought it was a really cool thing and if you descide to put this
in the next issue i hope some people take the oppertunity to watch any U2
thing an youll preobably notice what i noticed... hey i guess Darren really
does want to be like Bono...

[email protected]

Aww, I think that's so sweet! When I was in 3rd grade I did everything I could
to be like Belle (from "Beauty and the Beast") but I guess that's a little
different! ~Lauren :o)

I was really bored so I thought I'd tell ya this even though you probably
already know... well, I was watching the Dawson's Creek FANatic thing and they
started playing TMD.  Isn't it strange how Mtv has been using sg music a lot
lately?

[email protected]

GASP! Could it be...is MTV finally getting some taste?! I never thought I'd
see the day!!!!! ~Lauren :o)

hey lauren, when i heard about the connection between these two, i just had to
rent the video.  it was most definately a *strange* movie to say the least.
But as i was watching, i felt i already knew Angela Bassett's character
because of the song. Darren had *Mace's* thoughts and emotions nailed. it was
like i kept expecting to hear MADTF at any moment. And then, when i got to the
part where *Mace* confronts *Lenny* about his disks of *Faith*; and she says :
"she doesn't love you anymore. maybe she did once, i donno"..... "memories are
meant to fade. they're designed that way for a reason." i just got chills. the
feeling was so wicked. but the really strange part was that i don't think i
was the only one to rent that movie for that reason.(btw, this is a very small
town) when i put the tape in the vcr, it hadn't been rewound, and was at that
EXACT spot in the movie. is that weird or what? i just had to tell somebody
about that experience and figured you could add it to your list of strange sg
moments.
also, i'm hearing rumors about a Behind the Music show w/sg . do you know
anything about this?

[email protected]

Regarding that rumor, I haven't heard it but will definitely look into it. I
hope VH1 does it! Anyhoo, now I REALLY have to rent that movie! ~Lauren :o)

                                 A SpEcIaL sEcTiOn!!!

The results are in!! And I'd just like to start off with a big congratulations
to Savage Garden for winning in every category!! Yeah, like that wasn't
predictable ;)  Anyhoo, you chose the winners so here we are...the awards go
out to...

The Most "Gives Me Goosebumps" Song:
I chose "Moon" because when it was first re-released here, I got goosebumps
every single time I heard it on the radio (especially the ending music). And
the winner?

                                 And the Winner is....
"MINE"

The Most "Gets Me Up Makes Me Wanna Dance" Song:
My choice was "I Want You" because it's a song that even makes my mom want to
dance!  Anyhoo, over the summer I had to go to the dentist to get a root canal
done (scary!) and they let me bring my CD player and headphones in. You have
NO idea how hard it was to keep from jumping out of the chair and dancing when
"I Want You" came on!!!!! I had to settle for tapping my foot to the beat :)

"ALL AROUND ME"

The Sexiest Song:
I definitely picked "Universe". That's always been my favorite sexy song!!

"UNIVERSE"

The Song that Should Have Been Released:
~I think I picked "Mine". It's just such a beautiful song!!

"MINE"

The Best B-Side:
~My personal fave is "Love Can Move You". I love the beat!

"THIS SIDE OF ME"

The Grooviest Song:
~Definitely "All Around Me"! And such fun when they perform it live!

"ALL AROUND ME"

Best Instrumentals (as in the music itself):
~"Moon" wins here for me, though it was a pretty tough pick (Daniel is so
talented!). There's just something about the way the guitars start the song
and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra ends it. Oh dang! That would have made a
good trivia question...ah well.

"TO THE MOON AND BACK"

Best Acoustic Version:
~Again, another hard one. I love love love the way Darren and Daniel performed
"Moon" at the '97 ARIAs. It was more orchestral in terms of instruments used.
But I had to say "Truly" because I LOVE Anna's voice and the softer, quieter
way they sing it acoustically.

"I WANT YOU"

Song Most Likely to Appear in the Next X-Files Movie (and yes, there IS going
to be one!):
~I picked "Break Me Shake Me", I think. I don't know why, maybe Mulder and
Scully need a louder, harder song on their soundtracks than the spooky quiet
ones they usually have.

"CARRY ON DANCING"

Best Remix:
~"Truly Madly Deeply" (Dub Mix) was my vote, hands down. All it is is the
entire song with only the background vocals, but I love it. I never realized
how pretty the instrumentals really were until I heard it without the vocals.
It's gorgeous!

"I WANT YOU" (XENOMANIA PUNXY MIX)

Most Underrated Song:
~"I'll Bet He Was Cool" was my pick. I love the song...the music, the way
Darren sings it, the way Daniel plays it, everything. You don't hear too much
about it, though.

"PROMISES"

Song Most Likely to Be Played During the End Credits of a Movie:
~I chose "Carry on Dancing" because since I first heard it I've ALWAYS thought
it would be perfect as a movie theme song (hmm...perhaps in the upcoming
"Interview with the Vampire" sequel??).

"SANTA MONICA"

Song That Would Make the Best Movie Title:
~I think I chose "Universe". It'd make a good movie like "Contact", hehe.

"THIS SIDE OF ME"

Song Most Likely to Be Covered By Another Band:
~"Truly" was definitely my choice. I hear that there are already covers being
done. I was actually going to choose "Moon", but I had a dream a while ago
where they let 'N Sync do a cover of "Moon", and I yelled at Darren for it
(hey, it was plain wrong!).

"TRULY MADLY DEEPLY"

Best Line:
~I think I chose "...chic-a-cherry cola". Why? It's a classic! :)  Though
there are actually MANY best lines, especially the one from "Mine" I probably
should have chosen!

"I wonder if you know the pain to want the one thing that you haven't got"
~"MINE"

Best Discarded Title:
~"Stepping Stones" was my fave. There's just something about the title I like.
"MAGICAL KISSES" for "TRULY MADLY DEEPLY"

Best Guitar Solo:
~"To the Moon and Back" won for me. I've always loved the opening guitar notes
and throughout the whole song. They're great!

"BREAK ME SHAKE ME" (after "...that your soul is slowly fading")

Best Song to Play After Getting Your Heart Broken:
~"Break Me Shake Me" without a doubt! It's an angry song and it's probably fun
to listen to when you get mad!

"BREAK ME SHAKE ME"

Best Song to Play to Try to Win Your Crush:
~"I Want You"...a classic! I had to pick the classic!

"I WANT YOU"

Most Haunting Song:
~"Memories are Designed to Fade" - This song is soooooo spooky, especially the
background vocals, etc.

"MINE"

Most Intricately Detailed Lyrics:
~I chose "Mine", because the lyrics are so detailed, though the others weren't
too far behind.

"MINE"

Song That Requires the Most Tissues:
~"To the Moon and Back" won for me, as the only song that to this day can
still make me cry.

"TRULY MADLY DEEPLY"

Song that Best Fits the Delicate Mulder/Scully Relationship:
~I chose "Mine" because at long last these two are finally beginning to make
known their obvious feelings for each other. Though I do agree with the person
who commented that she thinks "Fire Inside the Man" would fit better! I didn't
even think of that!

"THIS SIDE OF ME"

Song That Should Be Used in the Upcoming "Star Wars" Prequel:
~I chose "Moon". I dunno, there's something about it that would fit the movie.

"TO THE MOON AND BACK"

Song Most Likely To Appear On "Buffy the Vampire Slayer":
~"Carry on Dancing" was my choice. I wondered if you would realize the most
obvious one, hehe. "Buffy" is mainly about vampires, right? Well, "Dancing" is
written about vampires. See the connection? I thought so.

"CARRY ON DANCING"

Song that Best Shows Darren's Incredible Vocal Range:
~I chose "Love Can Move You" without a doubt. The way he hits those high and
low notes in this song is amazing, especially live!!

"ALL AROUND ME"

Song Title That Would Make the Best Jerry Springer Episode:
~I chose "To the Moon and Back - My Husband is a Space Alien". I just liked
this one particularly. Maybe it's my sci-fi love, I don't know. Oh yeah, a few
people asked me who Jerry Springer was. I didn't even think that people in
other countries wouldn't know who he was! Anyhoo, he's a talk show host and
his shows have...racy subjects. I'm still trying to figure out WHY he's so
popular! It's disgusting :P

"To the Moon and Back - My Husband's a Space Alien"

Line Rose Should Have Said After Pushing Jack into the Ocean in "Titanic":
~I voted for "I want to bathe with you in the sea", but I actually like "I'll
bet he was cool" better now. It seems funner, because after all...they only
knew each other, what, 3 days???

"I want to bathe with you in the sea" ~"TRULY MADLY DEEPLY"

Best Song to Fall Asleep to:
~I think I chose "Moon"; I once fell asleep playing that song on loop (you
know, when it plays over and over again). It was great :)

"UNIVERSE"

Best All-Around Song:
~This one was sort of hard, though I definitely had to pick "Moon". I'd always
loved the song, but it became my all-time fave when Darren and Daniel re-
released it here in the US. Darren's lyrics and voice sound amazing (as
always, I know), and Daniel's music fits it perfectly. It's comforting, it's
sad, it's beautiful, it's perfect. Definitely my favorite of all time.

"TO THE MOON AND BACK" (won by a landslide, I might add!)

Again, just want to thank those of you who voted and sent in comments saying
how much you enjoyed doing these!! I appreciate it!!

**I've got another Savage site to advertise! Check out Tiara's site at:

http://www.webspawner.com/users/savagefan/

It's pretty cool...it's a "you know you're a Savage Garden fan when..." type
of thing. And I'll admit...I'm guilty of quite a few of them!!

That's it for this week! Oh! Before I forget...next week's issue will be out
early. I'll be sending it out on Wednesday night because Christmas Eve is
always a busy night for everyone and my family and I have to continue our
Christmas Eve tradition of watching "Christmas Vacation" (hilarious movie!!)
together. So anyhoo, the SGer will be out a day earlier next week. In the
meantime, Happy Hannukah, Merry Christmas, and Happy any other holiday I've
forgotten! Ooh, only 1 more day of school and then it's Christmas VACATION!!
Woo hoo!!!!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
