The Savage Gardener #72

Lots of people responded to my question of whether or not you think the second
album will surpass the other and just about everyone agreed. I'm going to
steal some lines from [email protected]  because some of the things
she said were just so true (there's also a full out response in the Savage
Comments section because I really liked that particular email)!! Anyhoo, Jaime
says "Some bands who try to make the crowd-pleasing music just try too hard."
That is so TRUE!! Sometimes the outcome is just such a sorry attempt. She also
said (and I really liked this one):"This is why I'm not pushing them, tapping
my foot waiting for the next album as their producers or someone may be,
because I'd rather wait two or three years and have a great album then wait a
year and have a few notes and a couple meaningless words (although I doubt
that would ever happen)." Bravo! I agree with you 100% on this. I know we're
all eager for the new album, but people should definitely give them time!

**The boys are included as one of the best male bands of the year in the
January issue of Teen magazine!!! Check out the issue!

**[email protected]  has let me know that the Billboard Awards may be airing
again on VH1 on December 19th and possibly the pre-show, also. I'm not so sure
about the pre-show, though. I'll definitely look into it and let you know for
sure.

**You all know for sure by now how the Billboard Awards turned out. But just
in case, I'll repeat it. "Truly" won...

Woo hoo!!! Congratulations, Darren and Daniel!!

                                            Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: What popular Aussie songstress does Daniel
enjoy? It's not Natalie but this one has a connection with her! Who is she?
Quite a few of you guessed Greaser Olivia Newton-John, which I was surprised
about. Does she have some sort of connection to Natalie Imbruglia that I don't
know about? Anyhoo, the answer is Kylie Minogue, who accompanied Ms. Imbruglia
on the Aussie soap "Neighbours". Congrats to those who got it right!!

This week's quessie is: When was the new "To the Moon and Back" video shot and
why, AND in what city (this part is an obvious one!)? Thanks to
[email protected] for the info!!!

Hey Lauren,
I'd normally insert something about how well you run the Savage Gardener
(and you do), or how your news is really interesting and unlike a lot of other
Newsletters you actually send it out before the news is as old as dirt, but
you know all that. ;)
Anyway, can SG follow up their smash CD with an equally, or even better CD?
Sales wise, more than likely if it comes out soon enough.  The more time you
spend out of the spotlight, the harder it is to reclaim.  Musically, it's
pretty much inevitable that there are going to be a lot of people who won't
believe it's better than, or as good as the original. But let's think about it
for a moment.  With the exception of Fire, the b-sides were new songs, no?
And fans scrambled to get them, even though they could hear them on the net.
Why?  Cuz the songs are well done, and show improvement in the band's style.
Which proves that the band is maturing and taking their fans along for the
ride.  In other words, to answer in English, hell yeah!

[email protected]

That last sentence made my laughter fill the room! I REALLY like how well you
put this, and couldn't agree with you more. The anticipated release is still
undecided, and I've heard so many different months that my head is still
spinning! Their songs are very much maturing as they go on, which is one of
the best ways of telling whether or not they'll make it. And with the good
majority of critics on their side, I do believe that we'll have our Savage
Garden for many years to come. ~Lauren :o)

Hi Lauren,

Ooohhh...oooohh...I just remembered something; I was going to write about
this last week but it slipped my mind.  I was home over Thanksgiving break
putzing around in my room with the TV on; a Rock n' roll Jeopardy marathon was
on.  They had a celebrity show with David Alan Grier and Yasmine Bleeth (and
some other dude too...?) - Yasmine had control  of the board; she was working
through a category called "First lines".  I wasn't really paying attention to
the TV at the time, but all of I sudden I was like..."WHAT did he say???!"  I
looked over to see Yasmine and co. COMPLETELY dumbfounded...then they flashed
the answer on the screen..."I'll be your dream, I'll be your wish, I'll be
your fantasy...".  I'm jumping up and down yelling "WHAT IS TRULY MADLY
DEEPLY?!  Come on, you should KNOW THIS!!! SAY IT!  ITS TRULY MADLY
DEEEEEEEPPLLLYYYY!!! SAAAAY IIT!!! AAAGGGHHH!!!!"  Well, NONE of them knew it
- I was VERY dissapointed.  But I thought it might be interesting to those
getting the SGer.

Anywho; great job on this Lauren - I also want to let everyone know that
WE STILL NEED SQUARES FOR THE SG QUILT!!!  I've gotten mail saying that
several others have sent thiers or will be sending this week.  So far I've got
one from Canada, OK, several that I'm not sure where they're from offhand; and
probably about 5 from FL on thier way.

Hi Lauren,

I have a few things to tell you about our favourite Aussie Guys.  First off, I
have a friend, Scott, who is 17.  He loves Savage Garden!  He`s always asking
me about them, lol!  He doesn't like Hanson, BSB or N'SYNC.  I think Savage
Garden are more of a group that both males and females can enjoy [insert from
me! Before you BSB/'N Sync/Hanson fans start flipping out again and sending me
hate mail, I think you should realize that what she's comparing here is that
Scott likes SG but not the rest, when usually people seem to think that if a
guy likes one, he likes the others. Which I think is dumb to think that,
anyway!].  Also, some neighbours of mine, who I used to baby-sit for, Knew I
liked Savage Garden, and I brought the Cd over one time to listen to while I
was baby-sitting.  The next time I was there, they had a copy of the CD!!!
They told me they love it, and they are about 30!  Also, Scott`s family own a
cabin south of where we live (Calgary, AB Canada)  When he`s there, he listens
to a radio station that isn't a major one many people here.  Each night, they
have a countdown of the most requested songs of the day.  When he was down
last weekend, he was listening to the "Top Eight at Eight" (as the countdown
is called) and Tears of Pearls was on it!!! I thought that was really cool.

[email protected]

Woooo!! Yay to Scott and the neighbors! LOTS of adults I know love SG
(especially my parents! You should hear my dad try to sing "Moon"!! Oh, and my
brother's absurd attempt to hit the high notes on "Tears of Pearls"! He was
going around telling me he would fire Darren and take over as lead singer.
Yeah, keep dreaming!). As for the countdown thing, I'm beginning to think
"Tears" WAS officially released in Canada!! Keep us updated on the progress
(it's got such a fun beat!) ~Lauren :o)

Hey Lauren! At MuchMusic's website, there's a place to vote for your favourite
video of 1998, to be aired on MuchMusic on New Years eve. I think this is only
open to Canadian residents, but I'm not sure. If you'd like to let people know
that they can go to http://www.muchmusic.com/events/favvids98/ and vote. It
would have to be To The Moon And Back that they vote for, because Truly and I
Want You weren't released in 98. That's all!

[email protected]

You heard the lady, VOTE! I know I am (unless it's only open to Canadian
residents!) ~Lauren :o)

*******************
Heya.. you've probably heard this but I think it's adorable and I thought you
could use it as a 'quiz' question in an upcoming issue? :)

When Darren was sixteen he wrote a letter to Michael Jackson.. "I love the
sound your belt buckle makes when you move Michael.. is it intentional?"

He admits that the clothes he buys and the hairstyles he's had are based
on Bono. This information is from the book 'Fanclub', in aussie bookstores..
it has a chapter on sg fans and then an essay by Darren about being a fan
himself. Thought you'd like to know!!

[email protected]

That is so cool!! One of the neatest things about Darren is how he's just like
us in terms of being a fan of someone/thing. I thought one of the greatest
things in the updates from the road the guys sent on their tour in America was
the pic of their shoes along with a little note saying how when he was younger
he would have gotten a kick out of seeing Michael Jackson's shoes (the other
was the beautiful goodbye/thank you letter to everyone...was that sad or was
that SAD??). I think there's a little Darren in all of us. ~Lauren :o)

Dear Lauren I was reading through an old article about Australian music in
America and it had a list of the No.1 hit song for each year over four decades
of Billboard. It said that the song that was made No.1 was the one that spent
the most time on the chart that year, not the one that spent the most time at
number one. Does this mean that Truly Madly Deeply is possibly the No.1 song
of 1998? (Just something else Savage Garden might add to their list of
achievements, I don't know!)

[email protected]

Well!! I was VERY excited when I read this email! As I said to ya in my reply,
I think it's very likely that "Truly" could be the #1 song of '98, if what you
read is right (which it should be). Wow, the thought of Savage Garden's song
being the #1 song of '98 here in America is just amazing! Note: I doubt this
has anything to do with the Billboard Awards. Rather, the charts themselves.
And you're right - just another thing Darren and Daniel could add to their
accomplishments!! ~Lauren :o)

Wow, do you know how long that took to type??? A long time!! Now PLEASE vote!!

**I just watched my tape of the VH1 preshow again and noticed that the lead
singer of Everclear (aaaah, I can't remember his name!!) seemed pretty happy
that Savage Garden won! He started applauding before anyone else and yelled
"yeah!" as soon as his bandmate said "Savage Garden" :) Another observation!
VH1's Cynthia Garrett called that category the Hot 100 Single of the Year, but
when Everclear announced it, it was Airplay of the Year. Is there a
difference? Because the other artists nominated with them were the same
competition they had for Song of the Year, but Next won (I won't even start on
that!).

**Quite a few of you asked why I thought the interview with Darren on VH1 was
so sad. I figured, why try to explain it when I can watch it a bazillion times
and write the transcript for you? I didn't get it exactly word for word, but
it's close enough. So anyhoo, you can draw your own conclusions with this.
Enjoy...

Cynthia Garrett: So Darren, I gotta tell ya something. Now, Savage Garden, you
are like my man, because for the <Darren laughs> no, I'm serious! For the last
year, I have been...like I was talking earlier about how they're the songs
that you hum to all year? "Truly Madly Deeply" is the song that I hummed all
year...
Darren: Awww!
C: ...and I'm still humming, and everytime I'm at the studio at VH1 I'm always
like "This is my favorite song!"
D: That's so sweet, thank you!
C: It's beautiful!
D: Thank you, it's just a love song, yeah. It's amazing, I mean, you
often...it's a very selfish reason, you write it for your self and when it
touches other people, it's a big deal, so thanks, that's cool.
C: How cool is that?! "It's just a love song"!
D: Cheers! [ok, here's the sad part!!]
C: You know, I can only imagine the inspiration must have been a very happy
woman.
D: Well, you know, I was completely in love at the time and...it was written 3
years ago...I was a completely different person. I was very...what's the word?
Innocent. And it comes from a really innocent place and it's like when we play
it live it's really nice to see it affect people the way it did when I wrote
it. [SOB!]
C: How has your innocence kind of grown up and matured with the success of the
year?
D: You know, we now have business managers and accountants and lawyers so I'm
a boss now, it's like an industry. And I guess that can kind of shake you. But
we're doing fine. We're doing fine.
C: Yeah, all of a sudden you're a product and you have to look at yourself
objectively.
D: I guess so, I mean, originally it's just about songs you sing in a bedroom
and you're just writing them these songs for yourself and then all of a sudden
it becomes an industry and so many people depend on what you do and that can
take a little time getting used to. But I think we're doing okay.
C: What do you want to accomplish with the next go around?
D: Just make another record that's from the heart. That's what we did the
first and we're having such a good time, it's a thrill. So...make another
record we're proud of, I guess.

And I'm sure you'll achieve, that Darren...

And enclosed for your reading enjoyment:

The Acceptance!

Presenter: To accept the award for the Hot 100 Airplay Track, please welcome
Savage Garden's Darren Hayes
[Clip of "Truly" plays]
Darren: Wow, um...it's a big deal, actually. So on behalf of Daniel I'd just
like to say a very big thank you to everybody at radio who supported our
record...everybody at radio and retail in general. Thank you, this is a very
big deal.

**Out of curiosity, I went to the AOL member directory thing and typed in
"Savage Garden male" to see how many guys there are on AOL that are SG fans.
Well, there were so many that AOL couldn't even list them all! My main
observation was that Savage Garden was among the hard rock/punk bands that
were also included (and SG was the ONLY pop band). That seem a little odd to
you?

**I just HAD to steal this off my friend Rob's site!!! This is something that
I can't believe I never even noticed!! Anyhoo, if you've read The Vampire
Lestat by Anne Rice (the series that inspired the name Savage Garden, of
course!), then you'll note that Lestat was in a band. Anyhoo, Rob noticed eery
similarities between the band in the book and OUR Savage Garden...

Chapter One:
P3. "Our first album has sold 4 million copies" Who does THAT sound like? lol.
P3. "Videos have been shown in.....Japan" We all know that SG is big in Japan!

P5. (About the music) "It was more melodic than most. There was a romance to
it in spite of its pounding drums" Which Aussie group sounds like that? Lol

P5. "They were slender, sinewy, and altogether lovely young mortals...a little
savage in dress......two male..." Which band could that be describing?

Also, Lestat is trying out to be the lead singer in a cool band that two
brothers are starting.... dosent that seem a little like how SG got started?

Isn't that freaky?! (Taken from http://members.tripod.com/Daz7/index.html)
Thanks, Rob!!!!

That's it for this week! Please help me out with this survey thingy! And I'd
like to say one more congratulations to the guys for making "Truly" the
Billboard Adult Contemporary Song of the Year and Hot 100 Airplay of the Year!
Ooh, I get my Christmas tree tomorrow!! Yay!! I love those...they smell so
piney!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
