The Savage Gardener #71

All of you were as excited as I was over the news of the record "Truly" made
this week here in America! Of course, the amount of pressure that's now risen
even more on the guys to make a follow-up album as good, if not better, than
the debut is all but insurmountable. Out of curiosity, what do you think? Will
the next album be able to surpass the debut? This is the most critical point
in their careers because the sophomore release is what determines if they fade
away or stay for a while. So let me know - can the next album live up to the
expectations the world has? Geez, I sound like a bad ad for a movie sequel or
something! Anyhoo, I hope this time you'll respond to this. You SGer readers
have disappointed me lately with practically ZERO feedback! And the feedback I
do get is usually from some angry BSB/'N Sync fan who claims that my opinion
might make some people mad (you can't please everybody, hon). Anyhoo, on with
the newsletter!

**Alrighty, I have all the nominations for the Billboard Awards!!

Artist of the Year(!!!)
Hot 100 Single of the year - "Truly Madly Deeply"
Group LP of the Year
AC Single Of The Year
Hot 100 Airplay Of The Year (This one is a sure thing!)

Don't forget, the awards air on Fox at 8pm EST (I would think PST too, you
east coasters always get the shows live!) and keep a look out for them in the
crowd (and of course, when they win!!). Best of luck to Darren and Daniel, I
know you'll be rooting for them along with me!

**This past weekend, the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 had a special All Request
Countdown. The one that started it all - "I Want You" - clocked in at #3!!
"Truly" was next, coming in at #39.

**Speaking of "I Want You", this song joins "To the Moon and Back"! For what,
you ask? It was recently re-released in Europe! The new title is "I Want You
98" and contains various remixes of the song (plus a karaoke version of
"Moon". I would LOVE to hear that, being my fave song of all time!). There's a
lot of promotion going on over there as the album is also being promoted
again. Except I don't think the album was orginally promoted much over there
to begin with, am I right? Anyhoo, thanks to [email protected]  for
keeping us updated! Let us know how things turn out, Caroline!

**Alrighty, I finally heard back from a U.S. book company that was listed in
the Savage Garden book and so far there are no definite plans to release it
here. Looks like we'll have to get from Australia!!

**Mr. Jones makes a magazine appearance minus the singing half of Savage
Garden. He is the musician selected to top the "Pop Stud" celebrity profile in
a quiz in a special issue of YM - a "Find the Real You" issue. However, Savage
Garden makes a double appearance as the subject of a question in a quiz about
how you and your boyfriend scrambled to get tix to see Savage Garden but his
parents are going out of town and needs to babysit his baby sister, yadda
yadda yadda. Anyhoo, the Daniel profile was an unexpected surprise so you can
imagine the heart attack I had when I flipped the page and found Daniel
staring right back at me! And for your reading enjoyment, I decided to type up
the teeny Q&A that accompanied the pic!

Claime to Fame:
The record-breaking number one hit, "Truly Madly Deeply" and top ten single
"To the Moon and Back".

Q: How did you and Darren Hayes beat the odds and become one of the biggest-
selling bands?
A: We were playing the local bar for the 700th time, and there were the same
20 people turning up drunk and throwing bottles. We channeled that frustration
into determination.

Q: Have you always been called Savage Garden?
A: We were called Crush, then we realized there was [already a band with that
name] in England that was storming up the charts.

Q: Is it tough to be in such a small band?
A: When you are working this closely with someone, sometimes you can't see
what they see. That's hard, but we usually have the same vision.

Q: You're on your world tour for the next year. What's that like?
A: Very unstable. I've always been a very stubborn person, stuck in my ways.
And when I'm being dragged around the world, to hotel after hotel, after a
while I get sick of it.

Q: Would you ever date a fan?
A: Yeah, if we were introduced by a mutual friend or something, but I'd never
pick out a girl from the front row of a concert. Girls attracted to my onstage
persona aren't attracted to the real me.

Attention ladies and gentlemen! I have now found my ultimate goal! To find a
mutual friend!

**Well, "Truly" has ended its run in the top 30 on the Billboard charts after
the record-setting historic one year run!! Many more congrats to the guys for
a job very well done!!!!!

                                              Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: Why does Darren prefer singing about lost
love rather than found love? The answer is because he loves passion and that
it was more interesting to listen to a song about a guy who loses a girl
rather than when the guy gets the girl and it works out because there's more
emotion. Congrats to the two people who got it right:

This week's question is: What popular Australian songstress does Daniel enjoy?
(No, it's not Ms. Imbruglia, but Natalie does have a connection with her!)

And now a very special comment! This is from my friend Rob (whose site is
listed below). Rob offers us the ultimate proof that Savage Garden IS a great
band...he's a guy and feels the same way about them as I do (well, except for
my teeny little crush on Daniel. He prefers Sarah Michelle Gellar). When you
visit his site, be sure to check out his letter to Darren and Daniel which is
SO sweet, no matter what he says! So anyhoo, I'm very proud of this comment
and any other guy out there who wants to offer us THEIR thoughts, please do!
Now to Rob...

Hi. I have this on my website, but Lauren liked it so she told me to send it
here to lol.

At first, Savage Garden seems just like another pointless, one hit wonder
teenybopper band. But if you actually listen to all the songs and take a
minute to think about the lyrics, theres much more substance and depth than at
first glance.(Yes, even "I Want You.") They actually play their own
instruments (Attn. Backstreet Boys), and write their own stuff, while still
avoiding sounding like 5 year olds. (Sorry girls, Mmbop dosent have any actual
meaning.) And how hard is it to write about tearing up hearts and breaking
hearts and playing games with hearts?(Jeez) Besides kicking everyone elses ass
in terms of lyrical ability, they also sound good doing it. Daz and Anna have
great voices, and sound virtually unchanged while singing live. (Have you ever
heard the Spice Girls live? Its twice as bad.) Even though Hanson plays their
own instruments (badly), they cant compete with Dan. Sometimes I feel sorry
for him while Daz is dancing around and he has to deal with the guitar and
keyboard at the same time. Music is audio, not visual. And, who cares what
they look like? It really doesnt matter. Looks are a matter of personal taste.
I think Anna is really hot lol. Anyway, thats it i guess.   PS: Lauren is the
greatest person I know!!!!

[email protected]

LOL, from that Anna comment you KNOW this is really a teenage guy. And am I
just the only one who never ONCE thought "teenybopper band" when I heard them
for the first time? Thanks to Rob for editing this for me! Now visit his site,
as I promised him I'd promote it a lot in exchange for editing this for the
newsletter! ~Lauren :o)

I was at my boyfriends house watching this show "Vinyl Justice" and this guy
was showing off his CDs and he said that Savage Garden was his favorite.  Then
they showed a clip of the "I want you Video"   just letting you know!!!!

[email protected]

Yay for the "Vinyl Justice" guy! I've seen this show a couple times and it's
pretty amusing! ~Lauren :o)

Hi Lauren! please include this in the next savage gardener...

Hi everyone. OK so as of today (Sunday) there are approx. 7 adults that I know
of that like the teeny-bopper bands. BUT the majority still are squealing
teenagers and under. (excludes me. ha that's funny! c(: Sorry.) Anyway, I
recieved two e-mails and I find that even the first one was enough for me to
clearly see that I was certainly wrong! I knew from the beginning it might not
have been a good idea to say all those things and turns out it wasn't!! Well
let me just say I am a BSB fan and I like 'N SYNC (especially Chris!! :) ). So
please no more e-mails regarding my article. (Right now I don't even know what
the heck my point was in that thing!!) I can't really put any BSB glorifiers
in this newsletter cause it's for SG!! But I can say I'm VERY proud of Darren
and Daniel for their year-long achievement with Truly Madly Deeply!! (Everyone
should know about this by now!!)
Did anyone spot Darren on the YTV Hitlist this past Friday or Saturday? He
answered a question on living in Australia. On having LIVED in Oz, more like
it!! I don't think he lives there anymore, or else he won't be soon. :( I was
going to send out something for North Americans (or Canadians at least!!)
about the HitList appearance but it was late, and then I forgot!! Sorry! But
for those of you who saw it, he still is delicious, non? It would've been
better had they played a video along with that too but oh well. I didn't watch
the whole thing, so maybe the Hit List finally has another great SG video?
I apologise to all the adult BSB and 'N Sync fans. But I hope there aren't too
many among you guys, if ANY, who love the Spice Girls!!! Whoo, now there are
an 8-year-old's dream idols!! :)

Oh, and remember the awards shows coming up with SG hopefully at them,
and nominated for awards!! Gotta see those billboard awards... the 7th.
MTv Europe on Dec. 10th on MuchMusic!! Did anyone see the 1998 World
Music Awards last week? Excellent perfomance!! If SG is at the Video
Music Awards which I think not, those air Thursday on Much which for
most of you is the day you'll get this!!

[email protected]

Alrighty, with this comment so ends the BSB/'N Sync thing. I should have known
better, actually. But this is it, and I'm sticking by it. Only when there's a
justified reason will I put in a comment that talks about the differences
between these groups (the first time this came up was when the guys did an
appearance on MTV News1515 and was asked about the difference, so that WAS a
justified reason). So if you feel like blowing steam over the boy bands, visit
Rob's site (it's listed towards the end of the newsletter) because he sure has
a lot to say about that! But to you personally, Erika, I don't think you
should apologize for it because it's your opinion. If you offended some fans,
so what? And this newsletter is full of MY personal opinions, so you should
never have to be sorry for saying yours. I stick by what I say about the BSB
and 'N Sync whether people like what I say or not, as should you and everyone
else. ~Lauren :o)

Hi lauren!!
I just read the mail you sent and i'm really happy for darren and daniel,it's
so cool!!I'm proud to be a savage garden fan!

For the savage comments, something really funny happened to me this weekend; You
know i live in france near paris,i was in the car with my parents,we were
driving in paris to go and see my brothers. When we drove by the places where
darren walked in the truly madly deeply video, the song played on the
radio!!!!!!!!!!!!It was so cool!I was laughing alone,my parents thought i was
crazy. And i was thinking: OH MY GOD DARREN WALKED HERE!!!!lol And a few
minutes later we were passing by a hotel named the MAGENTA HOTEL!hehe

And that morning,i was watching MTV.Usually, when i watch MTV,i always have the
magnetoscope on,to record in case of savage garden was on....and,solly me,i
forgot to turn it on that morning.........oh my god!!!There was that white
screen with written on it....DARREN HAYES/SAVAGE GARDEN..... I was kinda
panicked and didn't find the remote....Darren talked,i managed to record the
last seconds of it......he said:"It's all in here(he shows his head with his
fingers)and it has to affect what we're doing" And then the to the moon and
back video was played...

[email protected]

LOL, I totally know how you feel! I was listening to an older interview of the
guys and they were talking about a trip to Disneyland they had. I hadn't been
back there in a while so when I got on the rides that Darren and Daniel talked
about, all I could think about was "Ohmigosh! Darren and Daniel could have sat
in this very spot!". Ohhh, and when I was flying over Las Vegas on my way to
the east coast this summer, I saw the Stratosphere (looks like the scariest
roller coaster in the world!) and couldn't help but think about Darren's
little adventure on that! ~Lauren :o)

******************************************************************************
*******************
Has anyone realized that U2's Bono and Michael  Hutchence both had long hair
and then cut it short?
Is Darren following his idols a little too closely? Lets pray Daniel doesn't
want to follow George Michael!!!
Also anyone who seen  Days of our lives knows Peter is a murderer. He is in
TMD. Love Songs and Killers don't mix...

[email protected]

Actually, I DID notice that (about the hair thing). At the concert last
summer, I met a guy who actually cut his hair and dyed it black just to be
like Darren! I think that's so cute :)  As for George Michael...I won't even
go there! ~Lauren :o)

**Another Savage site to advertise! This is Rob's and it's great! If you're
really into the Savage Garden/Backstreet Boys/'N Sync debate, visit his site
for sure because he offers plenty on that (he has a teenybopper sister
obsessed with BSB so he deals with it first-hand). So check it out at:

http://members.tripod.com/Daz7/index.html

That's it for this week! Once again, don't miss the Billboard Awards (as if
you would!). Keep your fingers crossed that they'll get all the awards! For
those unable to see it, I'll be signing on directly after the awards and let
you know how they do. Best of luck to Darren and Daniel!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
