                                            Savage Trivia

Last week's question was: At what age did Darren start singing professionally?
The answer is 19, though you'd never think that! It sounds like he's been
singing professionally for years!! Anyhoo, congrats to those TWO people who
got it right!

[email protected]       [email protected]@aol.com

While I'm on the subject of ages, for this week's question, how old was Daniel
when he first joined a band?

Lauren,
After hearing about all the other Savage Mysteries going on in the world
(like BMSM hovering the US top 40 and hearing TOP in Vancouver) I thought it
was even stranger when my friend Lindsay told me that MuchMusic has been
playing the Australian Universe video and the European TOP vid!! And she's not
the kind of person who would kid about these things. But she said that she's
seen them both in the past two weeks on MuchMusic.. weird huh?
Anyhoo, just thought I'd tell ya that. Stay Savaged! (and I'm sure ya will ;)

[email protected]

Wow!! Now I'm really getting confused!! Are these songs being released without
warning or have people quietly realized that Savage Garden's songs are THE
BEST EVER MADE and have just been asking to get them played? I say quietly
because with the sudden appearance of tons of boy bands who basically send
tennyboppers' emerging hormones wild, there's no way to calm them down! Phew,
had to get that out! Anyway, I'd really like to find out what's going on with
these two songs, so if anyone has any way of finding out, please do! ~Lauren
:o)

******************************************************************************
********************
I heard Tears of Pearls too at the radio!! It always play in Canada!!! Two
weeks ago it was #2 at a countdown!! I live in Quebec!!!

[email protected]

Well, looky that! <sound of Lauren's brain in complete and utter confusion> I
think I need to really figure out why "Tears of Pearls" is all of a sudden
playing in Canada, and why "Break Me Shake Me" is hovering above the Top 40
here in America! ~Lauren :o)

******************************************************************************
********************
For the Newsletter. Hey I write 2 magazines now and its REALLY tough. I just
wanted to say you do a great job and wonder how you do it all. LOL. Well Keep
up the good work. :)

[email protected]

First comment: WOW! 2 of them?? It sure is pretty tough. I had no idea until
after Andrea asked me to take over the SGer for her (big shout out to
Andrea!). Second comment: thanks for the compliments! How do I do it all? I
honestly don't know what I do that gets all these compliments from people...it
feels pretty natural to me to be doing this. ~Lauren :o)

******************************************************************************
********************
Hiya Lauren! As to the BMSM and TOP airplay all I can guess is that those are
their next target songs since they were the other two they released on the SG
vid collection. Guess they're popular enough to give a try on the radio. lol.
I dunno. I'm just giving an educated guess! =) Talk soon and long live the
SGer! <3

[email protected]

Well, like I told ya, I think that's a pretty good guess!! It sounds plausible
(woo hoo!! I finally made use of that Mulder/Scully word! BTW, as I write
this, the X-Files season premiere is 2 days away!! Sorry, had to get that
out). Anyway, what does everyone else think? ~Lauren :o)

******************************************************************************
********************
Hi lauren!!
well i think i have some things to say for the SGer.
You know i have mtv europe and we have a show called select where you can
select the videos you wanna see and dedicate them, and in the evening there's
top selection where they show the 10 most wanted videos.
Well in the select show you can choose savage agrden with to the moon and back
and truly madly deeply.
And at top selection one day savage garden went number 5 with to the moon and
back!
And 2 days ago, just before showing the video of truly, the introduction was
done by savage garden themselves! Daniel talked this time!

[email protected]

LOL! It's amazing how psyched people get when they hear Daniel talk!! Now if
you don't mind, I'm going to run to the Empire State Building in New York City
and scream at the top of my lungs how CLUELESS America seems to be!! "To the
Moon and Back" was the BIGGEST song on Australian radio last year, it's doing
VERY well abroad, so why hasn't America picked up yet?! I really need to vent
my frustrations on this! Alrighty, I'm done venting! ~Lauren :o)

******************************************************************************
*******************
I'm doing a survey to put on my web page, and I'm in desperate need of votes.
I need people to e-mail me their top 5 favorite bands, and favorite song.
Thanks a million.

Hmm, i am trying to think of something to fill the Savage Gardener with. I
think the weird event thing that someone else came up with is good. ive had a
lot of those. like, the other night, on my radio station, they played the most
odd combination of music- i swear they couldve been at a Savage Garden
concert. first they played Truly Madly Deeply, then One of Us, then I Cant
Make You Love Me, then Sunday, Bloody Sunday(by U2, which was one of the bands
they played before the concert), then they played Sarah McLachlan's Building a
Mystery(also played before the concert), Closing Time(Darren sang the line
"closing time. you dont have to go home but you cant stay here." at our
concert), Smells like Teen Spirit, and Seal's Human Beings, and Daniel likes
Seal, so i thought that was just amazing. talk about weird. i nearly jumped
out of my skin, no lie. well, good luck with filling up the SGer.

[email protected]

WOW! That is so freaky! Thanks for sharing that with us! And as for my
personal opinion, I had always liked "I Can't Make You Love Me", but Darren
and Anna sang it beautifully and made me wish I could hear it again!!~Lauren

DARREN:(talking, sitting next to annamarei, the brown haired background
singer. And Daz is wearing a black SPICE GIRLS T-shirt!!!!!!!!!!!)We trained in
clubs, and bars and pubs in Australia so we spent the last 2 years building it

>>>TMD live with the background singers

DARREN:(still with his spice girls t-shirt but sitting next to nicky, the blond
background singer)The success in the UK and in europe has been a complete
shock to us.I think initially we thought we made an album that was going to
succeed in Europe and it did!!It happened in America first and we ahve almost
written it all.And i think we can make a new album the next time around(°0 i'm
nit sure of this one...)
Ans so that is a big shock!I think i found out yesterday that we sold more
than 600000 copies of the songle in the UK!

>>>Daz and Dan arrive on stage to take their award given by mike tyson and
mikey rourke.Daz is joking and does like he wants to fight with Tyson then
goes serious again.Dan is next to Tyson, dressed all in balck, smiling.
Daz takes the award and they go to talk in the middle if the stage.

DARREN;thank you very much!!

>>>TMD live

i didn't really undersatnd that,and what i understood doesn't mean anything
but anyway....

DANIEL:Some of the most important words of those...(????) the public are a
vote or something you say or it's because it's coming straight for the people
that you actually write music for so...

DARREN:(live on stage)See you next time!thank you!

DARREN:(being interviewed,wearing a long sleeve black t-shirt)This year has
been like a roller coaster for us,and i think we truly apreciate what's
happening.I think that we will lead.......(??)Maybe in a 4-5 years time,we'll
look back at this period of our life and we'll just say WOW

                                     THE END

                          *********************************
SAVAGE GARDEN-TO THE MOON AND BACK,pop up video

>>It was extremely cold at the time of the shoot. In between takes, crew members
had to keep Darren and Daniel warm with ski jackets and blankets.

>>For the inside scenes,a government was used.It was freezing cold in there as
well because they were not allowed to urn the heating on over the holiday.

>>When they were filming the outside scenes,a massive crowd gathered. They
shouted so loudly that Darren had to sign autographs to quieten them
down, which delayed the soot for 3 hours.

>>Darren once climbed on to a balcony to impress a girl. His biggest regret:not
paying attention in gym classes because he was totally uncoordinated.

>>Darren is a vegetarian. His father was a hunter who sold kangaroos to a dog
food company.

>>Accordong to the band, they chose the name SAVAGE GARDEN because it
represents their bittersweet music. It is taken from a novel by anne rice who
also wrote interview with a vampire.

>>The final roof scene were filmed on top of a different building to the
indoor scenes. The band were thrown out of the first building for trying to
climb up to the roof via the fire escape...(!!!!!!)

Savage Garden were part of an article on the Australian music industry
published in the Bulletin on Oct 27th. Here's a bit from it that lists
some cool figures about their success.

"John Woodruff followed a similar strategy in breaking savge Garden. He
discovered them after receiving a demo tape in the mail. He heard "great
songs and a great voice", got straight on  a plane to Brisbane and signed
them. But even he didn't forsee that that this duo would become the third
biggest selling act in the world (8 million CD's sold in less than two
years), with the secondest biggest selling album in Australian history
(behind John Farnham's Whispering Jack, 1.2 million).

Woodruff worked with them in a home studio for eight months, honing the
songs. "It was quite a process, a voyage of discovery", he says."And
then, we didn't do any press until they had made their first hit because
I knew the media would maul them. They're a pop band and there's nothing
more contemptible in the eyes of some Australian journalists." He sold
the band through out the world in seperate territory deals and they have
now been No.1 in 51 countries. "This has all happened on the strength of
the record," he says, modestly.

Alrighty, this is the last concert review I'll be taking. Thanks, Kerry! :)

Hey Lauren!

This is my To The Moon and Back Tour Review.

My best Friend, Andrea and I were very lucky, and were able to see The To The
Moon and Back Tour on July 3rd 1998 in Calgary Canada.  On May 23rd, I went
and lined up for 4 hours to get tickets.  When the doors open at the ticket
master, I sprinted to the counter, and was second in line.  I was so excited,
i almost dropped the money to pay for the tickets!  I got a pair of floor
seats.  I was sooooo happy to have them in my hands, that I started to cry in
the store, lol.

After 41 days of waiting, the day was finally here.  I had made a huge poster
to take with me.  it read "WE LOVE YOU DAN AND DAZ" and "Sweet like a chic-a-
cherry cola."  I name Andrea and I necklaces to wear aswell.  Her`s said DAN
and mine said DAZ.  I also Savge Gardn spelled out on my nails!  We got to The
Max Bell Arena (where the concert was being held) at about 3-3:30 pm.  There
was already a line up.  We were about 30th in line.  We waited out side, and
chatted about Savage Garden (of courses)  where we were in line, was right be
side the door into the arena, at the stage end.  The door was open a bit, and
we were able to hear the band rehearsing.  That was really exciting.  There
was only a wall between us and the guys!

At about 6 pm, they started letting people in, about 15 at a time.  We had to
have are bags checked etc. by security, then we were able to take our places
right in front of the stage.  I was able to get my camera in, without anyone
noticing too.  We sat down on the floor, and waited for about an hour.  We
were able to see some of the prep work for the stage, which was cool.  One of
the road crew walked by us a few times.  Later, on one of the concert updates
from Darren  on the website www.savagegarden.com, I saw a picture of him, with
Darren!!  I wish i had known at the time!  After a while, a DJ, from a local
radio station came on stage, to introduce the guys.  Everyone went crazy, and
screamed, and screamed.  Then, Zuckerbaby came on to open for them.  I think
they were good, but I was so busy thinking about Savage Garden, that I didn`t
really pay much attention to them.  They played for about 30-45 mins, then
they said thanks, and left.  the lights went out, and everybody screamed, and
we waited.  About 20 minutes later, the stage was very slightly lit, and full
of smoke, we knew they were going to be walking across the stage, 10 feet in
front of us ant second.  And sure enough, we saw Daniel, followed by Anna
Maria, Nicole, Karl, Ben and Lee walk across the stage, and take their places.
We were just screaming and screaming.  Then more lights came on, and music
started, and a piece of the floor came up....with darren standing on it,
wearing all balck, and black sunglasses.  At that point, the place just shook
with screaming.  They jumped right into Tears Of Pearls, and went on to put on
a show that put my friend and I in a state of pure ecstasy.

At the end, they said their good byes, and thank yous, and left.  The lights
stayed out, and everyone kept on screaming.  They hadn`t played Truly yet.
After about 10 mins, they came back on and said "How could we forget this
one?"  And they started to play Truly.  The whole building was singing right
along.  It must have been an amazing moment for them.  having 5000 people
singing music and lyrics that they had written.  After that, they said good
bye, and it was over.  I can`t find words to describe how great it was.  It
was so amazing.  As we were getting ready to make out way our of the Arena, my
friend dropped her purse.  Because we were on the floor, there was hundreds of
people all trying to get out, and it was very hard to move.  I knelt down to
help her look for her purse, i saw a small white thing under someone's shoe.
I had no clue what it was, but I hit the persons foot, so the stepped off it.
I picked it up, and when I looked at it, I realised it was a guitar
pick....one of the ones daniel had thrown during the concert.  I went crazy,
and started screaming and crying.  I was yelling I got it!!!!  I got Daniel`s
Pick!!!  It wasn`t for a few moments that I actually calmed down enough to
look at it.  It was a cool pearly white, with Ornage writting.  it said Fender
Heavy on the front, and on the back it says "Daniel Jones Savage Garden".
Needless to say, I was very, very, very happy to say the least!!  It really
made it the best night of my life.  Every time I look at the pick, I still
can`t believe it is his.  It even has little scratches from his guitar
strings.  It`s my own little piece of Daniel (c:

It was such an amazing night.  So different from the first time we say them,
at a private concert.  They are so amazing live.  I can`t wait for the next
time I`ll get to hear them live again, hopefully I won`t have to wait too too
long.

**With all these Savage Mysteries suddenly appearing, I figured, why not make
a TOP 10 GREATEST SAVAGE GARDEN MYSTERIES list?? So this is what you do, send
in as many things that you've been wondering (no need to number them) and I'll
see which ones appear most and put together the list. Whaddaya think? Good?
Bad? Let me know!!

**Here's our last Savage Garden concert review from [email protected]
(I put in the one from Kerry after this one arrived, that's why I'm out of
order).

"And here's a review for you...
4 Aug 98 Ottawa Congress Centre, Ottawa Canada

My sister got lost on the way to the Congress Centre cos we had only lived
here for a month before the concert, so we didn't get there as early as we
wanted. When we got there, we were kinda pulled into the crowd and the people
behind us were talking about setting us on fire... it was pretty funny
actually and they never did. One thing I noticed about the crowd was that it
wasn't made up entirely of screaming teenage girls. The people threatening to
set us on fire were in their twenties. There were some guys our age (but not
many)... mostly teenage girls (understandable) and people in their twenties.
The Congress Centre is such a weird place to have concerts... it's carpeted
and fancy-like... you wouldn't expect to have a pop concert there, more like
'An Evening with the Chamber Orchestra' type thing. Yet they also had the
*urp* BSB there one time...

Billie Myers was very good. She was kinda silly tho... she jumped into the
crowd and took some guys hat and wore it thru the show... but I enjoyed it
anyway... I think her songs sound better live then on the radio.
Then when she left, they played U2's 'Discotheque' and Madonna's 'Ray of
Light'. (SvGd didn't play it, it was the music they play between bands)
Iwonder if Darren had any control over this or it was just a VERY weird
coincidence? Karl stuck his head around the curtain before the show started
and waved...

Ben, Lee, Karl, AnnaMaria, and Nicole come out start playing something and
then Dan walks out. The stage goes black and you can see someone coming out on
the higher part of the stage behind the drummer. The lights flicker and out
comes Darren and Tears of Pearls begins, immediately followed by Love Can Move
You. I loved the duet between Darren and AnnaMaria... 'I Can't Make You Love
Me'... Darren acted the part so well with his facial expressions. Looked like
he was really hurt! Ever notice that when he sings, if you were deaf, you
could tell what kind of mood the song is from the way Darren moves, stands,
and how hos face looks? He really expresses music well thru movements. Well, I
had seen pictures of the infamous crotch-grab during All Around Me, But...
it's something you hafta see in person to believe!! Innocent Daz exploiting
his private parts for money... it was great!!!!!! About two minutes into the 5
or 6 minute version of AAM they do, Darren goes wild... nuff said... Well,
Carry On Dancing was absolutely incredible in concert. It has a certain
quality to it live... In the song when it goes 'move... closer... passion...
stronger...' Darren changed it to 'move... get closer... cuz the passion...
it's gettin stronger...' and now I can't help but sing it that way when I hear
the CD. He certainly is right when he said that it kicks butt live. They were
on stage for an hour and a half. Darren's voice was absolutely fabulous... His
voice (to me) sounded better than it does on his TV appearances and on the
album even. He hit every high note perfectly, even the one in Love Can Move
you when he says 'It's cold down here but I can honestly say I can still
stay'... he hit it perfectly. There's a something about his voice that's lost
in the recordings and it is just awesome and comes out during preformances.
The light show during Break Me Shake Me added some other element that made it
even more powerful. "Mine" was done great... the lighting worked well with the
song. They used alternate blue/gold lights that!
fit the mood just right. During I Want You, they did the same thing they did
on Hard Rock Live... the 'Now they will not let me leave this stage till we
hear you sing' thing. Cept he said 'I will not let them leave this stage'.
Through the whole thing, Dan was the only 'social' sorta one. He was the one
that would reach down to the lucky people in front of me and touch their hands
and stuff.... Daz just kinda crouched rreeeaaallll close to us but not touch.
Taunting us :) Well, that's about it!! "

That Daz, what a charmer! Well, that's it for this week!! Don't forget to send
in your nominations for the TOP 10 GREATEST SAVAGE GARDEN MYSTERIES list!!
I'll have fun with this!!! Also, I'll most likely have the chapter about
Savage Garden in that Best of the Boys book typed out for ya! In the meantime,
catch ya next week!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
