The Savage Gardener #61

Alrighty, as it really starts to show that the guys are taking a break (i.e.
there's no news in the news section!! Well, except for chart progress), I've
decided what to do with the rest of the SGer so you don't get a shortened
newsletter each week until Darren and Daniel decide to come back to us. If you
like the idea, take a test run and see what you can do to join in. Anyhoo,
read on to find out what it is!

**Billboard stats: Truly drops back to #25 and TTMAB also falls back to #49.
The album falls back 10 spots to #37 on its 75th(!) week on the Billboard
charts. Now for those who don't know, that's a VERY long time!!

**TTMAB falls back to #23 on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40.

**Tears of Pearls will be the next single in Europe, due for release in
November. Hopefully this means America will see Break Me Shake Me in the
upcoming future!!!

                                             Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: What frightening thing happened to Darren
that caused him to have nightmares for weeks? The answer is: He was robbed
while working in a videostore. The guys were very violent and stuck a gun in
Darren's face. He would have nightmares for months afterwards that the guys
were breaking into his house. And according to Daz, all it took was a dog's
bark to make Daz burst into tears. Poor guy!!!! He could have easily been
killed! Anyhoo, congrats to those who got it right:

Oh also, I'm looking for the MuchMusic apperance from August 5th... I can't
belive I missed it! Three days after the concert I went to and I didn't think
about them being on TV. Arrgh! So if anyone has it and is willing to send a
copy... I'll do anything! (was it just me or after reading that line, did Fire
Inside the Man pop into your head? [and I'll do anything just to know that I
can hold onto yoooouu])

Just so you know...if anyone watches the Fox Family Channel...yesterday around
5:30 in "The Basement" they interviewed Savage Garden!!  It was like 2 minutes
long, and the guys looked really bored.  The interview was awful....and it was
set before the American Tour started.  The guys looked really cute as
always...but the inteview was really bad!!!

[email protected]

LOL!! Yeah, the Fox Family Channel is kinda cheesy. Poor Darren and Daniel!!
Hehe, thanks for that info! ~Lauren :o)

Hi Lauren...
Can you PLEASE help my daughter get some info out to all the 'SG' luvers in
the US and Canada? To thank Dan & Daz, band and staff for a Fantastic "To the
Moon and Back" tour, she has started (with permission) a 'Savage Garden Fan
Quilt'.  What is needed is for fans to make a square and send them to her.
Needless to say the more the better! All info and other instructions can be
found at:
www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/5911/savgard.html
Hopefully with everyones help we can make this the biggest thank-you ever!
After all ...they're worth it, right?!!!
Thanx much...

[email protected]

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm most definitely participating! I think
this is a wonderful and impressive idea and completely creative! And it's the
perfect way to say "thank you". However, you can ONLY participate if you went
to the TTMAB tour AND are an American OR Canadian. So anyhoo, count me in!!

Savage Garden was here in Vancouver, BC  in November '97 as part of
their little promo tour through Canada and the US.  While they were here they
were invited to go on a talkshow called Vicki Gabereau Live...which airs in
many places in Canada..but is filmed in Vancouver.  The great thing about the
show was that it was almostly entirely dedicated to them...which means they
were on performing and being interviewed for almost an hour :) !! They
performed three songs...IWY, TMD, and TTMAB...all the acoustic
versions. The interview was pretty long so I'll include the highlights :

Vicki: So how do you get a hairstyle like that?  Do you just sort of put a lot
of glop into your hair and then stand upside down? (this was when he had spiky
hair like in the TMD vid)
Darren:  Well acutally, you don't wash your hair for a few days then wake up
at six in the morning to come on a really popular talkshow then say, "It was
intentional!"  *lots of laughing*
Vicki:  So are you the funny one in the band?
Darren: Yes!
Daniel:  Well, actually....I like Karl. I like Karl's sense of humour!
Darren:  Yeah, Karl is goofy and boofy but intentionally, that's how he get's
all the women.  *Karl winks at the camera and pretends to look dumb*

Darren (introducing the band) : That's Nicole, she's Ms. Dry.  That's
Anna..she's Ms. Sleaze. *Anna looks shocked and embarassed and tries
to hide behind a napkin* That's Karl, he's Mr. Sexual.  That's Lee, he's Mr.
Quiet....and Ben....He's Mr. Loud!  His hairstyle's even louder than mine!
___

*Darren stabs a sausage that is on Daniel's plate*
Vicki: Go ahead, eat it.
Darren: No, I'm a vegetarian.  Actually once we were in Germany and I
couldn't find a vegetarian meal for anything!  Even the milkshakes...it was
like "Would you like a MEAT milkshake?" *says it with accent*

At the end of the show they performed again.  This time though, they were just
sort of goofing around.  They played the end part of the acoustic version of
IWY, then Darren broke into all these lyrics that I've never heard before and
couldn't really make out because the back-up singers were singing really loud.
Some ppl say it was part of Sexual Healing.  Then he started saying "oh you're
sexy baby, yeah you're sexy baby".  And started an
impression of Elvis by saying "Hunka hunka burning love"  It was really cute
and funny.  He was looking right at Daniel when he said that! Now comes the
best part of the show!  Darren looks at Daniel and says "I think it time for
polka baby!"  and the band breaks out into this polka type version of their
songs and Darren sang a bit of Tearl of Pearls polka style until they broke up
laughing.  Then they sang the first verse and a bit of TMD in the same nasal
polka voice....then Darren starts saying "I hate you ppl!  I hate you ppl!"
and runs around unplugging Daniels keyboard and Ben's guitar.  It was just
unbelievably cute and funny!

Well hope you guys enjoyed that!

Also, a DJ here is good friends with Anna Maria Laspina, and he always
seems to get the SG news before any of us fans do!  Anyways, he talked
to her on the phone a week ago and she said that Darren and her went
to the MTV Video Music Awards.  She also said that they went to Marilyn
Manson's after award party...which was actually supposedly
quite lame for a Marilyn Manson party.  No animals being sacraficed at
the hor'dourve table or anything... :)
Too bad, eh?  And he had his clothes ON for once!  hehehe...

[email protected]

Thanks so much for that review!!!! It was great!!! As for the MTV Awards,
Darren and Daniel and the rest of the band left for Australia the week before
they appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show (Sept. 8th). Maybe they flew back.
But hey, where was Colby?! And a Marilyn Manson party?? Scary... Oh, and that
part Darren sings while performing I Want You live IS from Sexual Healing.
It's that "I got sick this morning, the sea was storming inside" part. Once
again, thank you!! ~Lauren :o)

Hi Lauren, again! Just something in response to the ARIA/Grammy
comparison.

I just thought that I should inform any of you American fans who don't
really know about the ARIA's as to what they are.(ARIA stands for
Australian Record Industry Association) They are most comparable to your
Grammy awards but they aren't really like that. The five nominations are
voted for by a panel made up of music industry people but the award
winners are also voted for by this panel. It is not voted for by the
general public. In this way there is quite a high degree of credibility
as there is no bias toward popular groups over some less well known ones.
In an article by Molly Meldrum after the 1997 Aria's concerning the back
lash he felt at the ARIA's for Savage Garden's huge award sweep he wrote:

'Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones are an amazing success story. Little more
than a year after the release of their debut single, I Want You, they won
a record ten awards at the ARIA's. And their self titled debut album has
gone seven times platinum in Australia for sales of more than 500,000
copies. They have managed to gain both the acceptance of the critics- who
voted for them at the ARIA's and -the public. This means they are good.'

[email protected]

Thanks so much for all that info, Dale!! The ARIA/Grammy comparison is that
the ARIAs are Australia's highest music awards whereas here in America ours is
the Grammys. That's what the comparison means. And thanks also for that little
article! I don't ever remember a group being so critically acclaimed by
critics. Even the people here at the Los Angeles Times gave them a terrific
review, and they hate everybody! Plus, the fanbase of Savage Garden is
considerably varied, unlike those of Hanson, 'N Sync, the Backstreet Boys, and
Spice Girls (no offense to any fans out there, I personally like 'N Sync and
the BSB). When I say varied, I mean the fans are of all ages, from pre-teens
to older adults. You don't find that very often anymore!! Anyhoo, thanks
again, Dale!! ~Lauren :o)

Hey Lauren,
I was wondering if you would put this in your newsletter or if you know
the answer ....if you could answer it....I've been reading several
concert reviews of savage garden from all over the world, and I noticed
that in some shows Darren picks a girl to come up on stage with him for
the song This Side of Me and then in other concerts he doesn't do
anything. I was just wondering if you or anyone else out there knew how
he picked the girl, I mean she has to be someone special considering he
doesn't pick one from every show right?? Or is just if he feels like it
he does it?? Also if anyone else out there got picked to go up on stage
maybe you can tell me what you were doing that got Darren's attention
and I can figure out the pattern! I've been wondering about this.

PS-In case you were wondering I did get choosen to go up on stage for
This Side of Me in the concert in DC, and got hugged!!

[email protected]

LOL, so you wanna figure out why you got picked, huh? I'm not exactly sure why
they choose who they do. My guess is it's just random; someone who just
catches their attention by screaming or something (btw, if any of you ever get
front row for a concert, they REALLY appreciate those who can sing along to
every song!!). ~Lauren :o)

Hey Lauren,
savage garden are coming back to america!!!!!! They are going to be
playing shows at The Join on Oct 16 with Jon B and on Oct.30 with Chris
Issac, this is perfect for everyone who is living in Nevada, but for the
people living in the east like me it sucks...but's still awesome they
are coming to the US again...so don't despair!!!! And if you can't go to
the show like me, at least think you are living in the same country as
savage garden for that time period!! AAAGGGHHHH!!! LOL

[email protected]

Yeesh, so much for the "vacation"! Come on, Darren and Daniel...get cracking
on that album!!! ~Lauren :o)

Hey guess what? Dazzy and Anna Maria presented the award for the Best
International Artist (they one they were nominated for... strange)at the
Much Music Video Awards!! Ironically enuf, Madonna won! (think: Ray of
Light... New York City concert...) so Daz got a few sentences to say and
a bit of camera to himself, and he was gorgeous!!! :) (Anna Maria looked
nice too, but I wasn't really paying attention to her!!) So, I got my
savage fill for a little bit longer... I have another three minutes of
him and his voice to watch till the tape breaks... lol I can't say I
liked the shirt he was wearing tho... oh well I take what I can get!! I
wonder why Dan wasn't there? Hmm... :)

[email protected]

LOL, see the comment I put in the above message! I guess I'm too impatient for
my own good! Anyhoo, my guess is Daniel is still in Australia relaxing. At
least we know we may not have to live without Darren and Daniel for too long!!

**Kristen fixed her website! Be sure to check it out at:

http://members.aol.com/monterey/aolweb

**Last week I forgot to put in the URL to read a Savage fanfic!! If you want
to see it, go to:

http://www.angelfire.com/pa/sgdomain/fic.html

**If you want to join other SG fans for a chat (this is AOL members only, I
think), then check out the Savage Garden Cafe. If any of you are interested in
the chat, you can email Ane at [email protected] on when the next one is!

**Alrighty, as you know I've decided what to do to fill in the SGer more since
the guys will be taking a break for a while. This was suggested by several
people, but I put my own twist to it. Every week I'll make up a topic and you
can write an article about it. It can include anything you want, as long as
it's about the topic. There's no maximum length for this, but please try to
keep it a reasonable length :)  Anyhoo, I'll read them all and then pick the
best one to  put in the following week's SGer. You can do them every week if
you want to, also. You think it's a good idea? I'll give it a test run this
week to see how the response is. So if you'd like to try it out, the topic
will be....Savage Garden vs. Boy Bands. So get those fingers typing!! :D

That's it for this week!! Stay Savage and so on! In the meantime, I'll be
celebrating my 16th birthday on September 30th, and if I blow out the candles
just right, you-know-who will show up at my door! Ah well, wishful thinking!
Anyhoo, catch ya next week!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
