The Savage Gardener #58

The bad news: the To the Moon and Back Tour has ended. Kaput. Finished. Over.
Done. You get the idea.

The good news: now that Darren and Daniel are back home in Australia, they can
finally be able to start work on their second album!! Yay!! And even better is
Daniel will be granted his wish: to go back to the recording studio. Sadly, we
almost had to say goodbye to Daniel last October because of that very reason
:*(

**America, prepare for Darren and Daniel's first TV appearance since before
the tour started! And, of course, who else would it be but the guys' biggest
celebrity fan but Rosie O'Donnell! That's right, the boys will be on her show
September 7th for the third time, so it's NOT A REPEAT. I can just imagine
what she'll say - "Almost 2 years ago I heard this song and loved it, then I
heard another song and loved it and it turned out to be the same guys, then I
heard another song and loved it and it turned out to be the same guys!" If you
didn't catch their second appearance, you'll have no idea what I'm talking
about :)  But anyway, look out for a performance of To the Moon and Back (I
would imagine). Hopefully this time they'll be able to talk!!!! And many
thanks to both [email protected]   and [email protected]   for almost
simultaneously telling me about the info!

**This week, To the Moon and Back falls back one spot to #16 on the Rick Dees
Weekly Top 40.

**On the Billboard charts, Truly jumps ahead to #22 while Moon drops back to
#31 (and I'm devastated about this! Keep requesting TTMAB!!!). The album drops
back to #28.

                                             Savage Trivia

I managed to stump ya again! Nobody got the trivia question right! The
question was: What was the name of the girl in Darren's French class that he
had a huge crush on and walked by her house every day for a year only to find
out she didn't live there? Her name was Angelique!

This week's quessie is: what music video by which artist did Daniel and his
brothers try to recreate in their backyard by using a video camera?

OK, I was surfing the Columbia site a few weeks ago for SG stuff, and they HAD
AN AD FOR MARILYN MANSON!!! Now that just ticked me off of course because
they'll advertise for his satanic CRAP but they refuse to have anything to do
with SG's "offensive" lyrics.. This was before I heard Mine for the first time
(at my concert in Indi-- I got to see Daz steal the golf cart btw!) and I
almost cried when I heard it!!! I can't believe Columbia would backstab the
guys like that by saying they're too offensive, then turning around and
advertising for the most offensive artist the world has ever known!!!  And
another thing you could bring up in your letter is that, if all else fails,
they could always take that one line out.. as much as I would hate it to
happen.. but at least the song would be released here for all the people who
will never get to hear it and experience it's beauty otherwise.. and it would
still rhyme, so that wouldn't be SUCH a big deal.. I just thought I'd bring
that to your attention (if you hadn't already noticed it) and I wanna say I
respect you for starting this petition and doing this letter to Columbia! SG
fans everywhere thank you!!! :)

[email protected]

Eeeeeek!! How could Columbia be such HYPOCRITES?! That REALLY made me mad!
Well, I'm definitely going to use your comments in the letter I'm writing to
explain the petition (I'll type it up for you all to see next week). Thank you
so much for saying you respect me for doing this - I'm doing this out of
respect for Darren and Daniel's work, and out of respect for those who aren't
able to hear it, and also, simply because I think it's ridiculous. Your
comment about them changing that one line was brought up before by another
subscriber, but like I told her, I can't see Darren doing that. It just
doesn't strike me as something Dazza would agree to. Well, thanks again!!

I was also at the August 25 concert for Savage Garden
And get this Daniel did come out After the show (My friend Carmela and I were
Doin our Makeup in the bathroom and as we were leaving we saw him) .  He was
with the Bass player and it  was near the Main Enterence.  Carmela nearly
Bumped into him ,then Started doin this laugh i never heard before And when i
looked at who she was gettin all giddy over it Was Daniel. Needless to say she
pushed me and I nearly fell in front of the heavenly God but she grabbed my
arm and Skipped away.   So in reference to DarrenSVGRD's comment he was there
and They had  to Leave ASAP cause they were due at MARS2112 for this Z100
promo party(I was there too).
To get pics of the action go to Partyshots.com I'm there along with
Carmela(I'm a Z100 winner.  Go ME!!!!!!)  And i got to meet Darren Again and
to my surprise he actually remembered me and Carmela from MTV studios.    And
I got to look Daniel Jones face to face and what Beutiful eyes he has!!!!!!!
OUCH!!!!!!!   Oh yeah can someone please tell me what Fragrance Darren
wears?.......that man smells so GOOD!!!!!

[email protected]

Well, according to the MTV Live interview back in April, the cologne Daz wears
is Dolce & Gabbana (did I spell that right?). And Natasha Henstridge sure
seemed to love it, so that's probably the same one he still wears :) ~Lauren

I was wondering if you could post this in the next edition of the Savage
Gardener...I would really appreciate it!

If anyone out there has VHI's Hard Rock Live of SG, FANatic and/or any of
their videos on VHS, please e-mail me to let me know if you would be
willing to send me a copy...I will pay TOP dollar for any inconvenience it
may cause.  My work schedule and other activities don't allow me enough
time to watch the TV, as much as I would like...Needless to say I am
unfortunate and deprived to have missed these appearances...Please help
me...I am super anxious!  Thanks so much and have a great day!!

Hey Lauren!!!!!  Well, I got bored the other day and was looking through my SG
stuff when I came upon the pics for the Japanese Ultra Rare Tracks single for
TMD and I realized that they're pretty cute pics so I made some captions for
them if you wanted to put this in your newsletter.....
Truly Madly Wacky
Pic:
1 (Front cover)-Daz: My neck really hurts from when I fell off the catwalk,
Dan.
Dan: Just be glad that's the only thing that hurts.
2-Dan: Hey Darren, would you mind moving your spikes so that our fans can at
least see one of my eyebrows???
Daz: It's all about the hair.
3-(top)Dan: So when you become a rock star, they make you do all these stupid
poses like this one.                 Daz: My neck still hurts.
(bottom) Dan: Darren!!!  You're still blocking the view of my eyebrows.
         Daz: That's your sunglasses, Dan.
4- (top L) Dan: Hey Darren!  I think your spikes have grown a whole
centimeter since we've been on tour!        Daz: Nah.  It's probably just the
buildup of all the gel I use.
(middle) Dan:  Do you think they'll ever stop with the stupid poses?
For gosh sakes, we're posing with CHESS pieces.
        Daz: I'm not saying anything.
(bottom)Dan: Dude, is that Meg Ryan over there?
                    Daz: Oi vey.
(right) Dan: Do you think that Meg Ryan really was here?
       Daz: My back still hurts.
5-Dan and Daz: Hey, who's those hot looking guys over there?
6- Dan: Those guys are staring at us, Daz.
Daz: That's us, Jonesy.  Now thanks to technology, they can make
illusions like that.
     Dan: Oh
 7-Daz: I'm shrinking....I'm shrinking
Dan: That's because we actually got a stage set this time.
8-Daz: Da-da, spread your wings and fly....spread your wings and fly.
     Anna-Ohmi....
9-Daz: Okay, that's the last time I try and do the 'Michael Jackson'.
    Anna: Ha ha ha
    Jenni: Oh please....
10-Daz: Place left hand over right hand...be careful to touch, not
pull......Aaack!!!!  Next time I am MIMING the action.
11-Daz: Ooh, I want you, don't know if I need you but....
Dan: Okay, this positioning will REALLY show all those stupid people
out there that we're not gay.....by the way, Darren, did you remember to put
on deoderant this morning?
12-(top L)Daz: WHAT???  WE COME ALL THE WAY TO AMERICA AND YOU FORGOT MY HAIR
GEL!!!!!!
(bottom L)Daz: You don't understand, I NEED my hair gel!!!!!  Please,
please, please, can we quickly fly back to Australia and get it?
(right)Daz:  THAT'S IT!!!!!  WHO'S IN CHARGE OF MY COSTUMES AND HAIR
ANYWAY??????   My wife?  Heh, heh...oh yeah.....
13-Daz: But I still need the gel, I tell you!!  I really do!!!
14-Dan: Woah!!!!!  That really IS Meg Ryan over there....

LOL, that was really creative!! Thanks for sharing it with everyone! ~Lauren

Hi Lauren ! How are ya ?

Well, I just came back from Hungary and here are the few infos I found out
there :
- TMD is at #24 in the BRAVO Charts ( it's in for 9 weeks now ) and last
week it was on #7 !
- Savage Garden is since 10 weeks in the BRAVO album charts : this week
it's #15 and last week it was #7, too !
Now German news taken from the BRAVO, too :
- For its 20th week in the chart, TMD was at #25 (falling down 9 places)
- For its 21st week TMD was at #21 (growing up 4 places)
- For its 22nd week TMD went back to #25
Now news from the UK :
- To the moon and back came out 2 weeks ago and is already on #3 in the
english chart !!! It's definitely doing better than the 1st time it went
released !
On my way to Hungary, I heard TMD in Austria at 18 km far from Wien. In
Budapest, at the bottom of the castle, while I was walking, I heard TMD :
so I just stayed and listened to it ! And when I came back home, I saw the
video for TMD on VIVA ( the German equivalent of MTV ! ) !

Well, I still send a message to all the Sg fans : I'm seeking stuff about
SG like articles and videos, .... So if you wanna help a french fan, e-mail
me at : [email protected] or ICQ me at the # 16130877 !!!

Well, Lauren Thanx Heaps for putting in my ad !

For the newsletter:
Today (or yesterday since technically it's 12:29 am) I was wondering around
the 'S' section of Media Play (how can a store that had every OTHER Bruce
SPRINGSTIEN album not have 'Born in the USA'?!) I noticed a CD marked
'import'. Seems good-old Media play has started carrying CDs formerly not
available in the US. So, praying to god that I might be right, I walk over to
the 'SA' portion of 'Popular Music' to see if I could get the Australian remix
CD. Unfortunately, Media Play has yet to actually cooperate with my wishes and
had neglected to have it. I did, however, find the Japanese CD. So of course
like any good little SG fan I bought it. For those not lucky enough to live
near a Media Play that gets imports from Japan, here's what it is. Basically
it's technically called 'Truly Madly Deeply ~ Ultra Rare Tracks'. There is all
the B-sides and whatnot everyone I'm sure that's reading this have heard VIA
RealAudio, except 'Mine', of course since blasted Columbia distributes SG CDs
in Japan. Well, here's the track listing.
Track 1: All around me. The track that didn't make it onto the US SG album
that's on the Australian album though. I STILL can't believe that that's
Darren Hayes singing that weird voice.
Track 2: TMD, album version. The only track that's on the US album, too.
Track 3: Fire in side the man. Columbia won't release 'Mine' because of
'Religious Content' and they let this and 'I bet He was cool' slip through?
Track 4: I Bet He Was Cool. I still find it kinda odd that a track about Jesus
has the word 'cool' in it.
Track 5: I Want You (xeno mania punxy mix). Definitely one of the better SG
remixes. A more flowing version of the song than heard most anywhere else.
Track 6: Love Can Move You. Great song. One of my fave's.
Track 7: This Side Of Me. Real audio song quality just doesn't do this song
justice.
Track 8: Memories are designed to fade. And yet no one ever forgets this song.
(`Least I haven't.)
Track 9: To the moon & back (hanis Num radio edit). Great Remix. I've noticed
that while the US album version of this song is the longest track on the CD,
the remix is one of the shortest. (If not THE.)
Track 10: Santa Monica (bittersweet mix). At the start of this track you kinda
don't believe that this is 'Santa Monica' but then it sets in.
Track 11: Break Me Shake Me (acoustic live). This song was written to be
performed live.
Track 12: I want you (acoustic live). Though it doesn't say (in English at
least), I'm pretty sure this is from their performance on the Rosie O'Donnel
Show.
Track 13: TMD (Dub Mix). A great if not a little unusual remix.
Track 14: TMD (Australian mix). The Australian version of this song.
Well, every track is GREAT, TERRIFIC, SENSATIONAL, ect. The accompanying
booklet has pics mostly from concerts. And there is this poll-out sheet with
the lyrics in both English and Japanese. Well, that's a lot of typing, but I
(hope, think, pray) that it was worth it. You can tell I've been a devoted fan
for quite some time.

For your savage comments section if you want to put it in.

I think Australians are starting to sorely miss their guys. This week I have
heard Savage Garden everyday on the radio between local and national stations.
In fact I heard BMSM on one local station and flipped over to another and
found myself hearing TMD! Through out the week I heard all of the first five
singles which is unusual. I don't even listen to the radio that much and so it
just goes to show Aussies are desperate for D and D's music and their new
album. It's like a plague. Everywhere I go Savage
Garden pops up in my face. I walk down the street and past shops playing
the album,I walk into foyers of cinemas and hear the album. I have
friends who call me just to say they've heard a Savage garden song. At
the moment the album is splashed across the television again and being
advertised as 'A HIT album with over 8 million copies sold worldwide.'
Australians are feeling savagely deprived! Come back Darren and Daniel,
we love you!

>From Dale!

[email protected]

Aww, that was so sweet!! I can just see how anxious Australia is for the new
album. I still think that Daz and Dan were right to take a break from Oz by
not releasing anymore singles for the rest of the year because to those who
aren't fans, you don't want overkill! Of course, there's still the question of
whether or not the second album will live up to the first. I'm sure we ALL
believe it will! ~Lauren :o)

Some very cool info from our webmistress/Aussie correspondant, Sarah!:

Well, you probably heard this by now, but... last night someone (a contact
of some sort (she knows the boys and/or their management personally) but I
didn't get to hear the whole story) rang in to the Ugly Phil show and said
how Madonna heard that Daz and Dan were doing 'Ray Of Light' in their warmup
routine. Anyways, her management rang theirs and said she was interested in
hearing it, so Daz convinced Dan to write it into their set (during Promises
when they go into another song for a bit - very cool). Apparently she went in
'anonymously' around 8 and took a seat in the 14th row?! She rocked on there
for a while, listened for 'Ray' and then left before the end of the concert.
Daz is a huge fan of her so apparently was psyched to know about it. I know
these details are sketchy - I didn't even catch which concert this was, but -
you'll probably get detailed info somewhere else - if you haven't got it
already!

If anyone has the imported Savage Garden video from Japan, let me know!!!!  I
just ordered it with my parents credit card and they're all pissed since they
think it's a waste of 4+ dollars (I ordered it the day after it came out).  I
haven't gotten it yet and was wondering if any of you know whats on it
exactly.  All I heard is that it's a "video collection".

**Also, I thought it'd be nice if you could be able to read the letter I'm
sending to accompany the petition, so here's a copy I typed up for you:

 To Whom This May Concern:
I am a loyal fan of Savage Garden and I write a weekly online newsletter
called the Savage Gardener which currently reaches about 350 people world-
wide. Doing this requires many hours of searching for news and information
surrounding the band. I frequently come across little-known interviews, and
one of them really stood out.
The article, entitled "All That Is Delitefully Savage", told little-known
facts about a few select songs, including "Mine", which appeared on the
Australian release album. Darren Hayes mentioned that the song was refused
release in the United States by Columbia because he and his bandmate, Daniel
Jones, were told that the song is "lyrically overblown, offensive, and quite
frankly has no place in the American market" because of it's religious
content, which, I may add, is only one single line. Please correct me if I'm
wrong, but doesn't "I'll Bet He Was Cool", the song on the B-side of "Truly
Madly Deeply", have an entire song filled with religious content? And if
"Mine" has no place in the American market because of the religious overtones,
how in the world did "Cool" ever get approved for release??
And if religious overtones are not suitable for the American market, why are
there gospel singers releasing records? Why are there Christian music groups?
Why doesn't anybody stop Marilyn Manson, whose album entitled Antichrist
Superstar is by far worse than the single lyric in "Mine" that was the only
reason the song was not acceptable for release? Basically, myself and fellow
fans see the decision about "Mine" as nothing but hypocritical.
I have spent the last couple months collecting names for a petition in hopes
of showing that the only offensive subject in this situation is your refusal
of releasing it. People who are very religious have come forward telling me
"Cool" offended them while "Mine" did not.
"Mine" placed second in a favorite songs survey conducted in my newsletter
and those who have heard it would love to have it on CD while those who
haven't have expressed a deep desire to hear the song which can be described
simply as beautiful and haunting. Said one fan: "I did a breakdown of the song
'Mine' in English class and when I played the song, everyone...asked where
they could get it. When I told them that they would never be able to get it in
America, they were disappointed." So you see, Savage Garden fans aren't the
only ones to wish for its release.
Yet another comment from a fan concentrates on your hypocracy: "...I was
surfing the Columbia site a few weeks ago for SG [Savage Garden] stuff, and
they HAD AN AD FOR MARILYN MANSON!!! Now that just ticked me
off...because...they would backstab the guys like that by saying they're
offensive, then turning around and advertising for the most offensive artist
the world has ever known!!!" She went on to say that upon hearing "Mine" for
the very first time at a recent Savage Garden concert, she cried. Its
meaningful lyrics and haunting melody has that affect on people.
Please don't prevent this beautiful song from being available to Darren and
Daniel's international fans. Included here are the names of people who would
love to see "Mine" on the B-side of an upcoming single. It's not fair to keep
one of Savage Garden's most beautiful songs from ever reaching the ears of
their fans. Thank you for your time, and please take this into consideration.

Well there ya have it. My Savage side wanted to basically chew Columbia out,
but I didn't think that would go over too well with them :) Again, a major
thank you to those who supported the petition by signing your names and
advertising on your websites!!! It's very much appreciated!!!

That's it for this week's edition of the Savage Gardener. Don't forget about
the Rosie O'Donnell appearance this Monday!!!! In the meantime, stay Savage!!!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!
