Hi everyone!! Since I'm leaving on vacation next week, this is the last
SGer
until I get back and can get caught up. I know, I know...I'll miss
you too,
LOL. I do have a *possible* airdate for the Hard Rock Live performance,
but I
don't know if it's the actual one (you'll see why later on). Anyway,
on with
the newsletter!!

**YAY!! To the Moon and Back has moved past its peak on the Rick Dees
Weekly
Top 40 this past week!! TTMAB peaked at #21 last August, but is now
at #20 and
moving up with a bullet! I hear it often now (and I don't even listen
to the
radio much!) and I just knew it would do great this time around! However,
Truly falls off the countdown this week, ending what Rick Dees called
an
exceptional and incredible run on the countdown. Way to go, Darren
and
Daniel!!
**Check out www.savagegarden.com for a clip of the new video for Tears
of
Pearls!!!! Released only in Europe, this is the latest single so check
out the
awesome video!!! I only have one gripe about it: THERE'S NO DANIEL!!!!
At
least, not in this clip anyway! And they always show Daniel in the
clips. I
want to know who authorized this video!! Leaving out Daniel in even
just a
clip calls for serious action taken by yours truly! Well ok, you can
catch a
glimpse of his silhouette from far away, but still.... :oD
**Alrighty, apparently the airdate for Hard Rock Live is August 14th.
This is
on the official Sony site, so I would think it's accurate. The boys
will be
performing with Lisa Loeb. However, other sources say Earth, Wind,
and Fire
will be performing that day. It's so confusing. Anyway, check it out
just in
case they do perform!
**Some info from [email protected] : The Savage Garden appearance on
MTV'S
FANatic is possibly on August 10th. I won't be here, so this time around
you'll have to check for yourself if it's on or not. For those who
don't know,
FANatic is a TV show in which MTV picks who they think is the #1 fan
to meet
and interview their favorite star. Of course, what MTV doesn't tell
you is
they think you have to be at least 17 to be the #1 fan!!
**A request from Mango123: She'd like to ask everyone to email MTV and
request
the new To the Moon and Back video on Total Request. To get in on this,
just
go to http://www.mtv.com/mtv/tubescan_launch.html and help get
TTMAB on TR!!
**Here are this week's Billboard stats: Truly hangs on to the #19 position
while the album drops back to #25. BUT WAIT!! That's not all....TTMAB
is at
#27, pushing PAST its peak last August which was #37. WAIT AGAIN!!
Do you know
what this means? Probably not! This means the NEW TTMAB single is now
in
stores (Billboard doesn't start charting singles until they're released
in
stores), so go get it!! BUT WAIT YET AGAIN!!! TTMAB is one of the singles
with
the GREATEST GAINER IN AIRPLAY AND SALES THIS WEEK!! Congrats to Darren
and
Daniel!!! TTMAB is doing beautifully!!!
**Savage Garden will be performing along with other Columbia artists
at this
year's Elite Model Search. I've heard the airdate is August 8th, but
this
announcement was a few months ago so I don't know if it's changed or
not. So
keep your eyes and ears open for the airdate. If I do hear anything
about it
before I leave, I'll be sure to let you know.

Savage Trivia
Last week's trivia question was: What did Daniel give Darren this past
Christmas? The answer is $300 worth of lawn mowing services! Daniel
called it
the "most practical gift" he could give anyone, and Darren says it's
perfect
because he'll do any household chore but mow the lawn! Anyhoo, congrats

those who got it right:

Hay, after reading SexxyAquaa's story I was wondering if there is any
advice I
could get to maybe meet the amazing duo. I'm going to a concert
in late
August, 3rd row seats is the closest i could get. If anyone could
give me any
tips to maybe get the guys to nitoce me, I would so love it.
I need all the
help I can get, they inspired almost my entire career as a writer and
I want
that to be known to them. Please put this in the Savage Gardener,
and anyone
who has met the guys, I would love if you could help me out here.
Ceri72
For my meeting with Darren I just walked up to him, but that was at
an
outdoors mini-concert and he was hanging around like 2 feet away from
me so I
don't know how to do it at a full-blown show. You could dress up in
an old
lady's outfit, dump flour in your hair, assume an Aussie accent and
claim to
be Darren's lost-long grandmother and demand to see your grandson before
the
show so you can give him a Hayes family heirloom for good luck. Then
again,
you could just arrive early and be lucky enough to catch them while
arriving
for the soundcheck! And on a personal note, I'd suggest that one! ~Lauren

First off I would like to bend over and kiss your feet in thanx and
worship
the ground you walk on for telling me about the Rosie O'Donnel show
and the

glad I
remembered this magazine and re-subscribed, your a life saver!!
JM080184
LOL, I don't think you'd want to do that, I'm definitely not worth it!
Daniel
and Darren, however, definitely are! Hehe, and to answer your question
I get
the info from hours and hours of searching. My Savage radar is always
on so I
never miss anything! Try not to, anyway! Thanks for the comment and
I'm glad
you found us, too! ~Lauren :o)

If you want to put in your issue, Savage Garden's " To The Moon and
Back" has
been on Vh1 & MTV about every hour to 2 hours (i've been tracking
it down".
And If anyone has the music station THE BOX they also come on there
every
hour!!!!!
Ack, that is SO COOL!! TTMAB is my favorite song of all time, so I'm
thrilled
to pieces (well I would be if it was any SG song, but ya get what I
mean!). I
once heard it on the radio and the DJ called it the "great new song".
I'm like
"right on, sir!". But then I'm the one who cried and hugged the radio
the
first time I heard it al the way through, so...anyway, I'm really glad
to hear
this! That song deserves the attention it should have gotten a year
ago!!

Lauren, would you do me the most amazing favour pleeeease and run this
letter
in your newsletter? I need to clarify something, I was reading your
letter,
and my review, and I just do not want to have anyone misinterpretting
what I
said.....although Darren was very friendly, and flirtatious, it's
important
that everyone who reads the newsletter understands that he IN NO WAY
came on
to ME or anyone else that I noticed! So far, I have gotten several
emails
from people just well-wishing, but on IRC I have gotten a lot of "headache"
from someone who is trying to make me out to be dishonest..so just
make sure
for me, will you please, that this gets printed??? Darren, I'm sure,
is very
devoted to his wife, and no one should try to mess with that, and it's
important that everyone understand that I wouldn't either...if he stopped
talking to me because of someone misinterpretting what I say, then
I'd be
pretty upset, to say the least...ok? Thank you sooo much for giving
attention
to this!!!
SexxyAquaa
Ok, Heather, can we spell "J-E-A-L-O-U-S"? That's what I immediately
thought
of when reading about that person who thinks you're being dishonest.
I agree
with you 100% - Daz IS a flirt, in my opinion. But that in no way means
he's
unfaithful to Colby!! Come on, get real! A guy doesn't write the Most
Romantic
Song the World Has Ever Known for just some woman he doesn't totally
love.
Anyone remember that speech Darren said at the ARIAs - "I love you
Colby,
wherever you are. You're my passion, my blood, everything, and I adore
you."?
So don't worry - I'm sure with most people who read about what happened
didn't
take it that way either. ~Lauren :o)

I'm not going to be asking for anymore concert reviews because I won't
have
enough for the special issue, but I just HAD to put this one in because
it was
the first stop for the Future of Earthly Delites Tour in Cairns, Australia,
and it was so well written and it made me laugh! So here we go!
Hi Lauren, I thought that I would send you a nice long concert review
seeing that you have only received one which surprises me actually
as almost
everyone reading the newsletter should of gone to one somewhere
around the world.Well I live in Darwin, Australia and it was the ONLY
capital
city Savage Garden didn't come to on their tour! We're too far away
I suppose
and we've only got one suitable venue however I was not going to let
that stop
me and I conned my mum into taking me and my brother to Cairns in Queensland
for their very first concert. Well I'd say that we experienced one
of the most
troublesome concert nights they've had on their tour besides the concerts
in
Brisbane where they both had those awful falls! It was expected because
it was
their first night but it was still absolutely sensational despite the
hiccups.
It started off with everyone queing in the foyer for a long time because
there
was an electrical storm outside and it was affecting all the equipment!
The
lights were out in the foyer and we only had small spotlights to see
which
really freaked my mum out and the airconditioning wasn't working and
we were
all crammed together. It was funny because the line would surge forward
every
ten minutes or so as we got let in and everyone would push and run
forward
only to be stopped and made to wait. When we finally got I was so elated
that
I was IN that I screamed and started clapping and the room was only
half full
and all those people just turned around and looked at me but I didn't
care I
was going to see Daz and Dan which was all that mattered! We experienced
all
the pre recorded music and a chant began and everyone was desperate
to see
THEM. The concert was standing room only and we'd been told to actually
sit on
the floor so that no one would faint or anything from standing in the
foyer
for so long which i did and we relished in the working air conditioning!
Then
we had an atrocious support act that just wasn't funny! I swear I don't
think
a roomful of people were more happy to see Darren and Daniel!
There was smoke and lights and we saw Daniel first. He creeped silently
up the stairs and onto the stage and no one really saw him until he
actually
got onto the stage and we all screamed and then Tears of Pearls started
and
Darren appeared at the top of the stairs and we all screamed again.
I was
actually some distance back because I wasn't going to leave my mum
and my bro
but because of the raised stage and the catwalk into the audience I
saw them
both all the time- also the fact that I'm pretty tall helped! Well
there have
been some changes to the tour since I saw it. I watched the Las Vegas
concert
over the internet and was surprised to see that some songs weren't
sung and
that the covers had changed as well as the (gasp!) costumes!
Well our techical problems were not over. In Love Can Move You,
in the
midst of a line the P.A system completely stopped! I was absolutely
dying
of fright because as much for them as for me I wanted everything to
go
smoothly. Darren kept singing and it was an incredible moment because
anyone that thought he was lip synching would of died right then. You
could
hear his voice ringing out through the hall and it definitly wasn't
recorded. And it was absolutely magical to hear the power and beauty
of
his voice without the music. The moment was only several seconds though
and the problem was fixed and the music suddenly became heard again.
I was deeply shocked and depressed for all you American fans out there
not to see A Thousand Words live. It truly was a highlight for me in
Cairns.
It really has a power on stage that you don't hear in the record but
the
middle section was what got me. You know on the album how in the middle
of the
song there is a sort of recorded mish mash of voices all talking over
one
another and it climaxes into an explosion of noise- well as that was
impossible live they did something so simple but effective to replace
it.
Darren simply said "Stop" and the lights went out, the music stopped
and it
was incredibly dramatic and exciting. Of course everyone absolutely
screamed
like never before and then the lights came on, the music kept going
and the
song went on but it truly was an amazing moment. I was waiting for
ATW at the
Las Vegas concert just to experience it again but well I should be
happy I saw
it the first time.
The other highlight which I'm sure everyone would agree with me was
All
Around Me. This has also changed with the inclusion of 'Spice Up Your
Life'
which some people will like and others won't. Also Nicky's and Anna-
Maria's
outfits have changed from the black patent leather I saw them in to
the white
outfits they wear now. I loved the simple choreography that went into
the song
and just the general 'love life' manner in which it was performed.
Our last technical hitch which most of you may have read about in the
Fanzine was during the encore of This Side Of Me. The song started,
there
was Daniel, we heard Darren but he was no be to be seen. At first I
thought it
was part of the act. No one on stage looked worried. He finally did
come on
about half way through the song and give that lucky girl a great big
hug and
he actually held her in a full embrace and sang over her shoulder to
the
audience. He then got on his knees and sang to her then he walked away
and she
got down shaking I think from the thrill. Afterwards he said to us
" You know
why that took so long? Because I've got three people with University
degrees
to dress me and they couldn't get my fly done up!" Well I for one am
glad they
did!
Everything else was just damn fine! Darren has to undoubtedly be one
of
the best live singers in the industry! Not many people can pull off
a concert
that has the vocal clarity of the album but still be new and exciting
live.
And of course loveable Danny singing the words to himself and just
generally
so happy to be playing for us! Well for all the magic of the concert
I was
surprised at the atmosphere. Everyone was a bit too calm for my liking
and me
being a big crazy fan further back, away from all the other crazy fans
at the
front I found I was screaming and clapping my hands in the air by myself
which
was a bit disappointing. Maybe they were just awestruck!! In I Want
You when
he tried to make us sing 'like a chic-a-cherry cola' it was awful because
only
myself and some people from the front would do it. Even my own mum
and bro
wouldn't do it! I mean we were singing it with all our might but it
just
wasn't a resounding noise through out the hall! Darren gave up actually
when
he realised it was sort of pointless! Anyway I WAS happy to see that
the
audience was not only teenagers. There was a good mix of everyone between
ten
and forty! There were little kids running around and a heap of people
like my
mum.
Oh the other incredible momemts which are unique to every concert are
their comments between the songs. These are very special to me because
they are talking to YOU. They are words only meant for you! After the
medley of songs at the beginning Daniel said " Thank you for supporting
us
Cairns" and Darren said "Some bands think it's cool to say some songs
are
hip and some are unhip. Well we just write songs and we hope you like
them cause we spent most of last year 30,000 ft above planet earth
and you
miss your loved ones." That was sweet. It makes you aware of how much
they sacrifice to give us our music. Darren also yelled with glee "
We've
been rehearsing this thing for six months now but none of it feels
as
good as it does tonight!" I hope that they still feel the same way
now after
touring for so long and with the constant pressure of having to perform
well.
Daniel didn't say much else except he introduced Santa Monica with
bursting
pride and a devilish grin by saying " We wrote this song in MY bedroom!"
And
finally Darren also said " Who would've thought that even three
people liked
a nerd from Woodridge!"
Well I've written my heart out here. I hope that all of you have as
much of an
amazing time as I did. I actually had the chance to see the concert
again, the
next day but I was so tired and sore from the physical ordeal of the
night
before that I didn't go but now I always wonder what if I had?! So
all of you
treat yourself!!

to admit!! ~Lauren :oD

There was this article in todays paper and I thought I'd type it up.
I
like what they say. :)
Savage Garden Blossoms
There must be good vides hovering around Orlando, Fla.,
because when
Darren Hayes - half the Aussie pop duo Savage Garden - picked up the
phone there the other day, he was in quite the chipper mood.
Maybe it has something to do with preforming just a stone's
throw
away from Disney World, probably one of the most Utopian places on
this
planet. Or maybe it has something to do with just being in the same
city
that spawned successful swooning pop acts like Backstreet Boys and
'N
Sync.
But when asked for a simple name spell-check (just to
be sure we
don't tick off a horde of Ottawa Savage fans), Hayes decides to be
playful.
"It's spelled with an R, a U with two dots on top, L...
no, I'm just
kidding," he laughed, before spelling his name out correctly.
That incident set the light-hearted tone for most of the
interview,
during which the 26-year-old Hayes talked about his love of Canada
and
about the music that has influenced him.
Along with the multi-instrumentalist Daniel Jones, who
turned 25 last
week, the duo has a massive impact on the late-90s dance/pop scene,
which Ottawa residents can check out when they preform with five backup
mucisians at the Ottawa Congress Centre Tuesday.
They've distilled diverse musical influences into moving
music.
Moving as in shaking one's booty on the dance floor, and - to their
fans
- emotional lyrics. (I want to stand with you on a mountain/I want
to
bathe with you in the sea...)
"I was raised on a lot of soul music, the Micheal Jackson
and Prince
when I was old enough to buy records," said Hayes in his smooth Aussie
accent. "Dan would listen to Metallica and Ace Of Base, and consider
both good. He's more objective about music, whereas I'm more a fan
or
artists and careers. I'm the one with all the U2 records in every single
pressing imaginable."
Savage Garden was sown in 1994, after Hayes answered a
'looking for a
singer' newspaper ad for a rock band in Brisbane, Australia. While
trying out, he hooked up with Jones. The duo hit it off well, decided
to
ditch aspirations for the other rock band, and struck out on their
own.
Four years later, their self-titled debut album on Columbia
- with
the hits I Want You and Truly, Madly, Deeply - has sold about eight
million units worldwide.
The album took home 10 out of 13 Aria Awards (the Australian
equivalent to the Junos) last year. They've been plugged on the Rosie
O
Donnell Show. They're in the middle of a year-long international tour.
In short, they're on top of the world.
While a touch of soul and 80s Europop shines through in
their songs,
the guys have also been keeping in touch with much more modern music.
It
turns out that the Garden-ers even listen to Alanis Morissette, the
former Ottawa resident who has gone on to mega-international success
with her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill.
"Even today at the soundcheck I was singing All I Really
Want," says
Hayes, reffering to a song from the record. "Occasionally I'll sing
You
Oughta Know... We Really like the songs. (The music) is just so real
and
accepted on so many levels. We're really facinated by that."
He adds that he and Jones are equally facinated by Canada.
The duo
toured western Canada earlier this year.
"We've been to Canada four or five times," says Hayes.
"I think we've
been to Toronto and Vancouver a few times, but we've neverhad the time
to visit it properly on tour. Dan has had a few more vacations in Canada
(off-tour) and he loves it. He's been to a few more places than I have."
"Environmentally, it's stunning," he says.
"That's why a lot of Australians vacation there. It's
a lot like our
country. I'm not kissing up to you when I say we love Canada and there's
a real kinship between the two contries. Australians and Canadians
share
a bond, and it's not just because of the Commonwealth (ties)."
He points out that Savage Garden initially recieved their
biggest
push in North America from Canadian fans. When the population difference
of the two countries is taken into account, up until this year the
duo
was selling the equivallent of four copies in Canada to every one sold
in the U.S. It's only recently that the Americains have begun to catch
up, going from a million units sold at the beginning of the year, to
reach a total of four million units sold by the end of May.
"We might record some of our next record in Canada because
we love
it," said Hayes, who said he'd like to record that dis in Vancouver
starting around December. "We've been slowly doing some new songs on
the
road. We need to write three or four songs to get one good one. I'm
not
afraid to say that, because everyone has a batting average."
Speaking about road life, how has he handled the gruelling
long days
and stress of virtual overnight success?
"It's been very strange," Hayes said softly, his voice
becoming more
sombre. "This job, and I consider it a job, has become like a
hurricaine. There's so much happening (on tour), it seems like I'm
constantly in the eye. Then it all hits me when I get back home. I
feel
changed, I feel older than my age sometimes."
"A lot of relationships and friendships have been hard
to keep
because you're always so constantly out on the road. So, we'll see.
Come
back and ask me that agian in a few years."
But he quickly regains his spunk, suggesting Savage Garden
won't be
quitting the road anytime soon.
"We're looking forward to coming to Canada," he says as
a chippy
goodbye. "There's seven people out on the road working hard to make
sure
you enjoy yourselves, so be sure to come out."
