The Savage Gardener #53

So here I am, basking in the glory of the SG concert I attended less than a
week ago. However, I'm disappointed nobody came up to say hi to me!! Where
were you all? Anyhoo, you know the sign I told you about? Well...it was given
to Daniel for me!!! How did I manage that? The sign was made out of that glow
in the dark plastic stuff and a security guy came up and told me he couldn't
let me in with it cuz it was too hard and could hurt someone. So I told him
how much time we had spent on it and he still wouldn't let me in, but took me
to a claim check so I could keep it there until after the concert. I was
filling out the info when this woman came in, commented how cute it was, then
offered to give it to Darren and Daniel for me! She told me to write my name,
address, and phone number and a little note on it so she could give it to
them! I wonder what Daniel did when he saw it glows in the dark! As I type
this, my throat and arms still hurt, but it paid off...Daniel smiled and waved
back at me!! Anyhoo, on with the newsletter!!

**Don't forget!!! Savage Garden will be performing on VH1's Hard Rock Live
tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm EST/PST on VH1 (well...yeah, LOL). The other
performers are fellow Aussie Natalie Imbruglia and Third Eye Blind. Don't miss
it!!

**Here's this week's Billboard stats! Truly is currently at #18 on the
Billboard Hot 100 while the album takes a couple steps back to the #21 spot.
Still amazing positions considering the album has been charting for 65 weeks!!

**I had a dream last night that at a bagel shop in Los Angeles the owner
renamed a bagel "Daniel's Earring Bagel". I think that may have come from the
fact that I was reading in one of those teenybopper mags about Darren and
Daniel's earrings. Wait, that's not news!!! Forgive me...it's late, I'm tired,
and I lost the jigsaw puzzle war I challenged my mom with. Life is tough :oD

                                          Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: During what time did Darren get married? This
was not an actual date, but a very important time in the history of Savage
Garden. What was this time? It was during the making of the Savage Garden CD!!
That's right, Dazza was recording the album, flew to where his fiance Colby
was, married her, then went back to the recording studios. Thanks to
[email protected] for the trivia question that NOBODY got right!

This week's question is: what is the nickname for Savage Garden's guitarist,
Ben Carey?

GASP! They don't like Mariah? Well, I'm sure if there were more guys on the
list, there would be more Mariah fans (call me sexist but it's the truth!).
Personally, the only thing I would condemn SG for is if they pair up with Puff
Daddy (I hate him! He's the male equivelent of the spice girls. No talent, yet
he's such a 'big star').

Hey, I got emails from guys who also think she's a you know what. Maybe it's
just you! Next time I see you, remind me to slap you back into reality!

I think the responses to the proposed duet where awful.  If it's happening
with Savage Garden we should support it-whether or not it's with someone like
Mariah-because the boys could surely use the publicity.  Personally, I like
her older stuff, everything but this last album has been great.  She has a
beautiful voice as does Darren so whatever the product of this is, it will
sound great as long as she doesn't drown him.  I hope it goes well and is out
soon.  That's all I have to say about that.  I hope the mine petition is going
well.  Peace love and Savage Garden!!

I don't take the position to speak for everyone else when I say this, but I
think what they all mean is that Mariah certainly isn't matched well with
Savage Garden. She has a reputation for being...well....not so sweet as she
once was, and it stuns us to think of her with them because Darren and Daniel
are such sweet, nice guys. I'm sure they support them in whatever they choose
but I personally think the collaboration is as unmatched as it can be. ~Lauren

To all Savage Garden fans:

We're all a part of this newsletter for a reason: because we're fans of Savage
Garden. That's an obvious statement, but let's expand on it a little further.
Webster's defines "fan" as "A person enthusiastic about a sport, performer,
etc." Obviously in this case, enthusiastic about Savage Garden; but Savage
Garden are two people - not one single performer. Over the past few months it
seems to have become a trend to make Savage Garden out to be one person. In
countless articles, interviews, and comments from fans, I've seen one-sided
discussions about the person who's always in the limelight - but nothing about
the guy who stands in the shadows. Nothing about Daniel Jones. Granted, a lead
singer always gets the most attention. That's true in any band, whether it's
made up of two, five, or ten people. But even Savage fans have been forgetting
that without the instrumentation, there'd be no music. There'd BE no Savage
Garden. I don't mean to say that no one ever recognizes Daniel. Obviously he
has a ton of fans, including Lauren, our fearless leader = ) and of course
myself. But much too often I hear fans talking about "Darren's music" and
"Darren's songs." Have we forgotten already that it takes more than one person
to make a band? Darren is a very talented person. I am a huge fan of his work
and I think he's an excellent performer; but without Daniel, Savage Garden
would not have been possible. So first of all, I'd like to say thank you to
the people who HAVEN'T forgotten about the guy who plays the guitar and the
keyboards, helps to write the music and the songs. But on a more somber note,
maybe some of us need to remember that there's more to Savage Garden than just
Darren Hayes. Maybe we should all just put a little bit more "enthusiasm"
towards Daniel Jones.

I promised Michelle I would put this email and my response with this:

Hi Michelle!

Believe me, I know exactly how you feel. It does seem like people forget the
other half of Savage Garden, and for me, it got quite sad (my mom is very
vocal about this. She gets so offended!). However, I managed to track down a
transcript of the Aussie Rolling Stone interview online and realized that this
is what Daniel wanted. Here's one part:

"Last October, on the flight to Sydney for the ARIAs, where they would clean
up with 10 awards, Daniel Jones told Darren Hayes that he couldn't take it any
more and that he was ready to leave Savage Garden. The music, which is all
Jones really cared about, had been overtaken by the promotion. Instead of
being allowed to hide away in a recording studio, Jones was giving 40
interviews a day in America, traipsing across Europe miming on TV shows in
every country.
" 'It was pissing me off. Music was becoming more about talking about it than
actually making it. I had to get back to the studio. I enjoy it and miss it.
The whole monster size of this machine takes it away from you,' he notes."

" 'The whole pep talk I now give video directors and photographers is that I
don't want to be up front. I've drawn a line for myself, and that's the
compromise I had to make to deal with being in this band. Now everyone
understands what it is about these two people. One wants to be here, the other
wants to be here.' He holds up his hands to indicate the difference, the gap
between them is a metre wide."

So personally, I've come to the conclusion that it really IS what Daniel
wants. That he doesn't want to be promoted, and that all he wants is to just
make the music and let Darren do all the promoting. Sad? Definitely. I'd love
to see more interviews with Daniel. I'd love to see more pictures of them next
to each other. But if this makes Daniel happy then I'm happy. I don't want
either of them doing anything they don't want to do. I think I'll put your
email + my response in the newsletter so others will have a chance to think
about this themselves. True fans will always see Savage Garden as Darren Hayes
and Daniel Jones, and those who don't were never meant to be a fan. Thanks for
your email, I'm actually glad that someone brought it up.

~Lauren :o)

In doing this newsletter I come into contact with many fellow fans, and I want
to make one thing clear: there are many, MANY of you who certainly don't
forget that SG has two halves. However, those less informed (like newer or
undevoted fans) of the duo are usually the ones who forget. So let it be what
people think, just remember that a true fan will never forget Daniel, whether
he be in the spotlight with Daniel or in the shadowns (think World Music
Awards!!). And from what I've seen, none of you have ever forgotten! What I
find most pleasing about being a fan is that nobody devoted to the guys seem
to truly favor one. They're both equal to you. Darren and Daniel would be so
proud to have fans like you!!
