Well, "Crash and Burn" should start kicking in on American radio at
any time.
This is the time to start requesting it on your local radio station,
VH1, and
MTV. I was able to see the video online, and while the quality wasn't
all
that great, the video itself is absolutely gorgeous. Without a doubt
the most
beautiful one they've ever made, and probably will ever make (it's
that
good!). In fact, for those who have seen it on TV, can anyone tell
me the
name of the director? If anyone can get any info on him, I'd really
appreciate it! Thanks in advance! Anyway, keep an eye and ear out for
"Crash
and Burn"!!

**"Crash and Burn" is the theme song for a German TV show called "Samt
und
Seide", which translates to "Skills and Satins". Thanks to
[email protected] for the info!
**You can see the entire "Crash and Burn" video on a special section
of the
Sony site. You need either the Real Player or Windows Media Player
(I
recommend Windows...Real Video sucks beyond belief!). If you have these
things, go to www.savagegarden.com/cab.html
**[email protected] has info that the "Crash and Burn" is in possession
of the
people at VH1 and MTV. Since they have it, I'd expect it to start airing
very
soon - maybe even next week. So I'd suggest taping New Videos on VH1
(10-11am
everyday). Let's hope we see it!!
**"Affirmation" is at #36 this week on the Billboard charts, and "I
Knew I
Loved You" drops back to #8.

i far
prefer "truly madly deeply" over IKILY. i think because i prefer the
smoothness of the guitar and the drums with TMD matches the lyrics
better
than the components of IKILY; to be honest, IKILY is my least favorite
song
on Affirmation. ;) i love it, but it's still my least favorite. plus
i think
darren isn't kidding when he says it's just as pure as it gets- there's
absolutely nothing about it that any happy couple wouldn't relate to.
IKILY
is a sweet sentiment, but think of it this way: a guy comes up to you
and
tells you that one of these songs reminds him of you. would you rather
hear
him say "i want to spend every moment with you" or "i've been stalking
you."
okay okay so that's not what it says, but IKILY always makes me think
of that
pick up line, "are your legs tired? because you've been running through
my
dreams aaalllll day." at any rate, another reason i think i like TMD
better
is because of the videos; TMD is set in the most romantic city on the
earth,
while IKILY has darren with an underage actress on a subway in LA.
i think i
like the objectivity of TMD better in the video context as well. ;)

Ok, as far as which love song is better it is hands down "Truly Madly
Deeply," for more reasons than I can name! I have been pondering
this for
quite some time as well, and annoying all my friends with my opinions
saying
how "I Knew I Loved You" isn't a real love song because it is not written
for
anyone. It's pretty much just another boy band song (at least
that's how i
think of it) because there isn't any true love behind it, there may
be
emotion, but it just seems like a bunch of sappy lies. I like
the song but
it is by far not my favorite. I don't even listen to it on my
CD, I only let
it play if it's on the radio. Truly, on the other hand, is pure
love,
innocence, romance, and everything else! It was actually written
for someone
Darren loved/loves with all his heart (I'm probably one of the few
fans that
is hoping this is all a shame and that Darren really is still married,
not
even sure why though). Of all the people who have read the last
fanzie they
know what i'm talking about. With Darren saying that he really
does believe
that Colby is his soul mate, I mean how much more in love can you get?
And
that song is pretty much his love immortalized. So in the end
Truly is pure
love, while I Knew is just another number one.

Hye Leo!
Local mag Galaxie has done a full-length interview with Darren (it includes
an old pic of the guys)...here it is!
(G = Galaxie, D = Darren)
Darren Hayes, one half of Savage Garden and the unanimously
voted
spokesperson for the group by his low profile partner Daniel Jones,
doesn't
do interviews. He has conversations with the media. "It's more personal,"
says Hayes frankly. "It is less exhausting because I don't feel I have
to be a
politician with this record."
He adds, "When I have conversations, it doesn't
feel like I am
compromising anything anything with my spirit and my soul." So, in
an
informal, "no holds barred" chat, Hayes goves us an insight into the
heart
and soul of Savage Garden and an album called Affirmation.
G : You moved to New York to find inspiration for this album, is that
true?
D : Unknowingly, yes. Like any artiste, I tend to seek inspiration
from life.
There were some personal changes that had gone on in my life and I
wanted to
write an album about relationships and isolation. I had the opportunity
to
live in New York, which I did because, I wanted to stay in that head-space
for
this record. However, the minute the album was finished I left New
York, I
didn't want to live there anymore. I realised that, that process was
finished.
I was much more happier in San Francisco where we were recording the
album.
G : So all the darker songs were written in New York? What was it about
New
York, the weather maybe?
D : I think it had a lot to do with the weather. I think there is something
about sunlight and your level of it. Affirmation and I Knew I Loved
You were
songs that popped up in San Francisco. And, when that happened, I knew
this
wasn't going to be the black album.
G : I have heard of method acting, but method song writing?
D : It's not that uncommon actually. Bono is famous for quoting this,
"Every
artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief, they all kill their inspiration
and then sing about that grief." I centainly hope I am not someone
like that,
but, I suspect that there is a certain amount of chaos that I need
in my life
and if it is not there I create it and then say, "Poor me". And then
proceed
to write about it and the next thing you know it is a record.
G : If there was no love, sadness or hope, what would you sing about?
D : I hope that our next album will be the love album, the "let's get
sexy"
album. Our first album was kinda fun and melancholy and our second
definitely
has moments of sadness - there is hope but there is sadness - and angst
and
longing. I want the third album to be the "I'm happpy and in love album".
Then the "let's get jiggy with it" record.
G : So, what kind of music do you like?
D : My favourite records are really broody. George Micheal is someone
I just
adore and I love his music. His album Faith, I think, is a perfect
pop record
and I said to Daniel I wanted Affirmation to be a bit like Faith. To
have pop
songs like The Best Thing, I Knew I Loved You, Affirmation but to also
have
broodiness like The Lover After Me and moments of reflection like in
the song
Two Beds And A Coffee Machine. Now, that is a classic song [if I do
say so
myself], classic piano and voice. Two Beds And A Coffee Machine could
have
been written by people twice our age. I wanted it [the album] to have
that
kind of diversity.
G : Was Faith the main influence on this album?
D : We had been listening to the music scene a lot and there were a
lot of
artistes who influenced us - Alanis Morisette's new album, K's Choice,
Natalie
Imbruglia and some old Eurythmics albums. I was listening to an album
by
Bruce Springsteen called Tunnel Of Love and it was all about a relationship
and how it didn't quite work out, Peter Gabriel had an album called
Us with a
similar kind of theme. I think we took all that into the computer and
out
came this record, Affirmation.
G : Did you and Daniel spend a lot of time preparing what the album
would
sound like?
D : We did and we didn't. A lot of this album was written when I was
living in
New York and Daniel was in Australia. He would send me tapes of music
or zip
discs with music there and I would write melodies and lyrics and record
rough
mixes. And we would send stuff back and forth. We were doing that before
we
even admitted that we were actually writing music for our next album.
We just
felt we were experimenting because we didn't want to feel the pressure
to top
up the next record. But before we knew it we had almost an album's
worth of
material and we hadn't even been face to face.
G : Which is your favourite track on the album?
D : I think th best song is Two Beds And A Coffee Machine. It is a
well
written, magical song. There there is Gunning Down Romance which is
so self
indulgent and dark. Chained To You is like the sequel to I Want You.
I must
sound like I am really conceited but I love this album. I enjoy it,
much more
then the first one.
G : The people who buy your records are the same people who buy the
Backstreet Boys, does this disturb you?
D : No, why would it disturb me? I enjoy the Backstreet Boys and I
have met
them a couple of times. I consider them acquaintances. It would be
hard to
criticise them. I bought Millennium - with my own money. Of course,
I sent
someone else to the record store to get it.
G : What's your take on boy bands?
D : I think the Backstreet Boys are the best at what they do and the
rest
should just go away. I am sick of all the other wannabes. Theu are
honest
about what they can do and what they are trying to do for you. I have
a
problem with the mass fabrication of pop stars - people who can't write
songs, people who can't really sing. I feel that if you're just a package
and
you don't write songs then you better be really, really good at singing
for
me to respect you.
G : Are you affected by criticism?
D : I'd be lying if I said it didn't affect me because it does. But,
you can't
please everyone and ultimately you have to do it for yourself and we
definitely do. I made records because I want to hear the songs on the
radio,
songs I love. I have made an album, twice now, full of songs I really
want to
hear. If you start of doing that, it's okay. But if your motivation
was to
impress someone or imitate the current trends, then I would be worthy
of that
criticism.
G : The last word?
D : I think we take our pop stars way too seriously. I've said this
before, we
are just paid clowns, we are designed to make you forget about life
for five
or 10 minutes. I think life is difficult enough so music, film and
books
should take you somewhere else for a moment. That is what I do and
I really
enjoy that.

For those who aren't lucky enough to see the most beautiful, fantastic
video
Savage Garden has ever made (and, again, probably will ever make!),
[email protected] typed up the phrases that appear throughout the "Crash
and
Burn" video, along with a little description as to what's going on
(the
phrases describe the images seen in the video). Thank you so much,
Brittany!
Okay... Here's a list of the messages in CAB and their corresponding images:
Television is a one way conversation (shows a guy flipping channels,
then
getting frustrated and kicking the television across the room, breaking
it)
Vanity is a call for attention (shows models dressed up like peacocks
strutting down thin balance-beam runways)
In cyberspace contact is anonymous (shows a kid sitting in a chair that
appears to spin around at its own free will while the kid types messages
on a
keyboard attached to the chair. In the background, Daz sings on a screen)
We scream to avoid suffering in silence (shows a couple screaming at
each
other, which causes the girl to scream as well)
Stay connected (shows a woman in a dark room shining a flashlight on
a
telephone, which is floating through the air.. appropriately, this
happens
during the line: "Let me be the one you call...")
Relationships are a series of complex games (shows a couple spinning
a
spiderweb, then kissing in the middle)
Agree to meet in the middle (shows another couple climbing a tree like
lizards, then sticking their tongues out -- also like lizards -- and
kissing)
We find strength in numbers (shows many girls wearing pink, walking
around
like flamingoes)
Synchronized flashing is considered dashing (shows people flying around
a
light, their bottoms flashing like fireflies)
Communicate any way, any how (Darren talks to the girl in sign language,
she
talks back)

This is a little Savage Garden lyric game I made for the SGer. It's
pretty
tough, I wrote the thing and I don't even think I could get all of
them
correct! This is a list of partial lyrics from every SG song on the
debut
album (US & Aus), Affirmation, all the B-sides, and I don't care
(I made that
one really obvious). For every song there is 1 or 2 lines. Number
a piece of
paper 1 - 30, and set a clock for 4 minutes (So you don't have enough
time to
look up the lyrics; that's cheating). For #1 write down the song that
you
think that lyric is from, then move on to #2. There are no doubles.
I
purposely chose some hard lyrics from the songs so that this'll be
tricky.
You have to be familiar with EVERY SG song to get this. I've included
the
key, but DON'T look at it before-hand! It's no fun that way!

for those who asked, the order of the Vampire Chronicle's is as follows
Interview With the Vampire
The Vampire Lestat
Queen of the Damned
Tale of the Body Thief
Memnoch the Devil
Pandora
Armand
Vittorio
and there are more in the works..... next one is supposed to have to
do with
the gawdy chicken restraunt, "Sayas" I think, that is replacing the
building
where Lestat was found at the end of Interview with the Vampire. I
just got
back from New Orleans and saw the church that Anne Rice personally
owns, it's
called Saint Elizibeths and it is the church that is the model for
the one
Lestat is in now. I can't wait, anyway, enough about Anne Rice, this
is a
Savage list, just wanted to inform those who didn't know.
P.S. Did every one read latest update? poor..... gah... Karl was it?
that got
his shoe's taken, before I went down there my friend (who lives there)
told
me that if someone asked me anything about my shoes to tell them "they
are on
my feet" and walk away. lol..... luckily in my case it didn't come
in handy.
Oh oh oh! I have to comment here! That story about Karl's shoes is a
really
cute one (I still can't figure out why he decided to let that guy try
them
on!). But anyway, one of my favorite Darren quotes comes from that
story -
"Someone stole my Rolex watch...my expensive Maharishi jacket and my
Gucci
shirt by the way. From a hotel..or an airport. Whoever you are. I HATE
YOU."
I just love that man! K, I'm done.

You might find this interesting. Kiss Fm in Chicago is having a contest

I heard
it on the radio today being advertised, and just astonished to think
who
could come up with that.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I am getting tired of waiting
for
VH1-USA to get around to playing the "Crash And Burn" video.
I think we need to take some serious action to get their attention.
So will
everyone please take a few minutes and send email requests and post
messages
on the VH1 message boards to tell them that we want them to play this
video!
We really need to FLOOD them with requests if we are going to make
a
difference.
Here is the address:
[email protected]
Use the VH1 Message Boards:
http://messageboards.vh1.com/vh1
Send an email to "The Daily One" Hosts. You can ask them questions or
send
them a question that you would like them to ask Savage Garden when
they have
them on as guests. They are listed at "upcoming guests" on their website
but
they don't say "when" they will be on. Hopefully SOON!

Note: If you were using the DJ email address before ([email protected]),
VH1
emailed me and told me that it is just for the VH1 radio station, it
is NOT
for videos, so please use the "mysay" one above instead.
Thanks everyone! Let's show VH1 that we are here for our guys, ok?

**We've had a suggestion from [email protected] regarding the changing
layout of the SGer (cuz it's just so BORING). She suggested "publishing"
the
SGer on the web rather than making it an email based newsletter. That
way I
can do all sorts of cool thing and insert pics and such (since I'm
such a
nice person and conscientous of you non-AOLers who can't see pics in
emails!). So I'm asking you lovely people what you'd like - keep it
email, or
make it web-based?
**There was a mistake with the Behind the Scenes at the Savage Song

last week! Tammy accidentally sent me the wrong draft - the complete,
correct, finished draft can be found at her website which is currently
not
working (figures!). So if you'd like to see the complete, finished
one, email
her at [email protected] I'll put the address of the site it can be
found
out as soon as the site starts working again.
**We have another cute Savage Personal! Here's the personal from
[email protected]
SWF 17 y.o seeks SWM to share 'Two Beds and a Coffee Machine' in downtown
'Santa Monica'. Must enjoy living like animals, and moving on all night.
You
should also believe in Karma, and must not make promises you know you
cannot
keep. 'Crash and Burn' into the 'Universe' inside my heart, and we'll
'Carry
on Dancing' 'To the Moon and Back'.
**Did you know...."I Don't Care" wasn't put on the album because the
people
at the record company thought the album was too long?
**That sexy pick-throwing thing Daniel does in the American "I Want
You"
video? It wasn't meant to be there - our sweet-tempered Danny (note:
SARCASM!) blew his top and threw the pick at the director! Temper,
temper,
Daniel! No rock start tantrums!
**Anyone else notice Darren's heavy-duty breathing on "Affirmation"?
Sounds
like he's gasping for breath sometimes! A technique from his voice
lessons,
perhaps?
Alrighty, that's it for this week. Again, start requesting "Crash and

on both your local radio stations and VH1 and MTV. And keep an eye
out for
the fantastic video!!!! Catch ya next week!

since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make
no
