The Savage Gardener #115

Well, it took about a month but I FINALLY have all the Savage Song Awards
categories handed out, and a good majority of the speeches are in my hands.
I'll have all the speeches by Saturday, so expect the SSAs to finally work
their way into the SGer next week. Thanks to ALL who volunteered - I can't
tell you how much I appreciate you helping me out with this! I was flipping
channels back and forth, checking out the Grammys from time to time and
managed to catch Britney Spears's performance. She definitely sang the first
part of her song (what was with that whole flower thing?!?), but she was
TOTALLY lip-synching "Baby One More Time". On the other hand, props to her
for wearing something that actually covers up more than 1/8th of her body!
Can't say the same for Jennifer Lopez though! Alrighty, I have to get this
cleared up too. I've only heard the song "Smooth" (hasn't everybody?) on
Santana's album, so I can't say anything about that, but WHY is Santana
getting all the credit for the song?? All he did was play guitar - Rob Thomas
wrote the lyrics, co-wrote the music, AND sang. It should be Rob Thomas
featuring Santana, not the other way around! I'm not what you'd call a fan of
Rob Thomas, but this situation just doesn't seem fair to me! Anyhoo, enough
about these people...!

**"I Knew I Loved You" is #1 on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 for the 6th
straight week in a row!

**Darren was quoted this week in a Los Angeles Times article about the lack
of quality music in the industry nowadays. Here's his part of the article:

Even artists enjoying tremendous success today sense a decline in pop
music that matters or stands the test of time. One of them is singer Darren
Hayes of Savage Garden, an Australian pure pop duo that has sold about 14
million albums world-wide and scored its most recent No.1 U.S. single earlier
this month with "I Knew I Loved You".
"I've gone through a phase of late where I'm very frustrated with the
scene today because it's lacking in substance and sincerity," Hayes says. "I
don't know that a lot of the music today will be remembered, and as a
songwriter that really saddens me...I love music, and when I see something
like Lou Bega's 'Mambo No. 5' at the top of the charts, I get frustrated. I
ask, 'Why?' And I keep waiting for it to get better."

**Walter Afanasieff, who you all know worked on "Affirmation", won Producer
of the Year for his work on "The Animal Song", and more. Congratulations,
Walter!

**"I Knew I Loved You" is #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the 3rd week in a
row, while the album drops back 1 spot to #24.

Hey Lauren, I was reading your news letter and I saw the thing about the
voting for Savage Garden on the Anne Rice thing. I have read all of the Anne
Rice books and I think Savage Garden would be VERY fitting. As far as I can
tell, I actually think a few of their songs have very specific Vampires in
mind as undertones or inspiration for the songs. Such as at the end of
Interview with the Vampire, I don't know if it was or not, but "Sympathy for
the Devil" just sounds like a Louis and Lestat kind of song, weird, I know.
Anyway, I don't see any reason why she shouldn't take our votes seriously.
oohh oohh, and every should read those books! they're wonderful! Besides ...
the casting for Interview wasn't all that great ... the ages of them were
off, isn't Lestat not supposed to be like a foot shorter than Louis? and
Claudia was a bit older in the movie, OH MY... AND THE BIGGEST CASTING ERROR
THAT GETS THE GOLD IS........ Armand.... ANTONIO BANDERES? what were they
thinking?? Armand (Amadeo) is supposed to look 17, he also has long auburn
hair ... though ... not as long as the hair in the movie, I could bye that
they made him dye it black ... but come on ... late 30s and 17 are just too
far apart for me to bye it ... oh oh oh oh, and the interviewer ... he was
like a kid in the book... I don't remember his exact age but he was A LOT
younger than in the movie. ticks me off when they make BIG errors, I didn't
mind the Lestat and Louis ... but the Armand and Daniel ... too much for me
to handle. Looking at the guys pictures I can't think of any Vampires in the
books that they would really just blow me away as exact matches for, but I
don't see why they shouldn't make the sound track. maybe Darren as a Lestat
... could you guys picture that? I'm not sure if I could ... anyway... I've
babbled a lot more than I originally intended to so thanks for
listening...er... reading... ~(:)~

**Just a reminder: Those of you who received the email about the SSA speeches
(which should be every single person who's presenting), don't forget that I
need your speeches by midnight this Saturday, Feb. 26th! I gotta put the
whole thing together, so don't flake out on me!

**Has anyone (in the U.S./Canada) received the latest issue of the Fanzine
yet? I know it was sent out last week, so it should be in my little hands
soon, but it seems like it should be here now!!

Alrighty, that's it for this week's issue. Stick around for the long-awaited
Savage Song Awards (hosted by yours truly, of course!). In the meantime, stay
Savage!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make no
money for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty big
company like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me
(especially since you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's earnings,
anyway). My family gets a  big laugh everytime my bank statement arrives.
Besides, my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just watched
contains real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect the
innocent. Is that your final answer?
