The Savage Gardener #114

Ahhh, it's Wednesday night as I type this section in the SGer and we just had
a HUGE downpour! It had been so long since we saw rain here in southern
California, that the rain that we've been seeing for about a week is such a
nice change! I just love it! I need to live in a place where it rains more
often! So anyhoo, I'm still waiting for the SSA speeches that I emailed a few
people about last week! I only emailed about the first half of the list, and
not too many of you turned your speeches in by the time I asked, so GET IT IN
before I come after you with a laser or something, ok?! I hope everyone's
Valentine's Day was nice - I'm thrilled because I have about 800 pounds of
Hershey bars. I can never get enough of these things! That's why when I saw
that picture of Daniel with a GIANT Hershey bar on tour in '98, I just died -
2 of my favorite things together in one pic! Alrighty, that's enough babbling
for now, so let's get on with it!

**YAY!! "Affirmation" is now 2x platinum in the U.S.!!!! That means 2 million
copies have been shipped!!!! Congrats, guys!!!! How about that...their first
album going 6x platinum and their second album going 2x in less than a
month!!!

**"I Knew I Loved You" stays at its #2 spot on the Billboard charts, and
"Affirmation" falls back 1 spot to #23.

**If you live in/near London and would like to see Savage Garden perform for
FREE (what the?!?! FREE?!?!), on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Sound Republic,
Swiss Centre, Leicester Square, call Rachael at 020 7287 0045 ext 212. The
only catch is, you gotta be between 18-40 yrs old. Now I'm even more
confused...I can (barely) understand 18, but now they're limiting older
people?! You British are strange ;)

**"I Knew I Loved You" continues its run as #1 on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40
for the 5th week in a row.

**Just 2 weeks after "Affirmation" making an appearance on "Dawson's Creek",
another new Savage song is heard on the show. "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine"
was played tonight, marking the 4th time a Savage Garden song has been played
on the show. Thanks to [email protected]  for alerting me before I watched
the show!

**Looks like quite a few of you were watching that chessy, ridiculous FOX
special "Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire" along with me! I watched it
because nothing else was on! Same reason I watch "Dawson's Creek"! Anyhoo,
the multi-millionaire chose his bride and they actually went through with the
wedding. And guess what fitting yet too beautiful a song to be wasted on a
ridiculous situation such as this? Yup, you guessed it - "I Knew I Loved
You"! About halfway through the show I had this gut feeling that that song
would be played - and it was. I'm psychic!

**Here's a brand new promotion schedule for Europe for Savage Garden. I know
we have a few Europeans on the list, so this one's for you! By the way, does
anyone else think of British people as Europeans? I know they are, but I
never do! Another random thought from yours truly.

**Entertainment Weekly did a little article on the changing roles of Darren
and Daniel (a friend gave it to me - I have no idea what issue it was).
Here's the article:

GARDEN'S VARIETY

Sipping tea in a Manhattan hotel, Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes is
fighting off the flu, but the soft-spoken, fast-talking singer has a lot to
chat about. Namely, how the 1997 self-titled debut album by two working-class
lads from Down Under ended up selling 11 million copies worldwide, thanks to
the unrepentantly romantic singles "Truly Madly Deeply" and "I Want You". And
how, with "I Knew I Loved You" from the group's already platinum follow-up, Af
firmation, they have another swooning top 10 hit.
Lyricist Hayes, 27, and multi-instrumentalist/tunesmith Daniel Jones, 26,
met as teens in a Brisbane, Australia, cover band. "I knew instantly we were
going places together," says Hayes emphatically. That group went bust, but
the two rose from the dead, borrowed their name from Anne Rice (her phrase
describing the world vampires inhabit), and spent a year writing 40 songs
from which they eventually culled Savage Garden. Though equally melodic, Affir
mation, Hayes says, is "more bittersweet and melancholy" than its relentlessy
Uberpop predecessor, reflecting on the 1998 dissolution of his marriage and
the "lonely, hard" year he spent in New York writing it. "On that first
record I was scared to expose myself," he says. "But then I'd see Sarah
McLachlan and think, I want to feel what I'm singing."
The release of Affirmation prompted the duo's decision to split their
band duties, becoming a kind of musical Penn & Teller. They'll continue to
write and perform together, but the sociable Hayes, who just bought a home
near San Francisco, will be the duo's spokesman, while the reclusive Jones
("Daniel has a Zenlike calm") remains behind the scenes, tending to Savage
Garden's retro-80s, synth-pop sound at his Brisbane home studio. "It's such a
relief," enthuses Hayes. "We're both doing exactly what suits us."
As the band's public face, the boyishly handsome Hayes even appreciates
the marketing value of the is-he-or-isn't-he? speculation he stirs up. "If
you're straight, if you're gay - hey, if you're a horse - and I appeal to
you, great," he grins. "I don't feel particularly compelled at this point to
set the record straight". So to speak.
Hayes is adamant, though, that "a song has to stand on its own. Ours do -
we dress them up because we enjoy pop." Their 15 minutes won't last forever,
he admits, "but we can write songs for years to come." Incurable romantics,
take heart.

**Aaaaaand, remember the article People magazine did on Darren a couple weeks
ago? 2 letters made it into this week's issue regarding the article:

What a delight to open People and find an article on the beautiful,
multitalented Darren Hayes of Savaget Garden. His lyrics take us on wonderful
journeys down the highways and footpaths of the heart. And that incredible,
angelic voice! I have yet to hear it and not feel my soul and spirit take
flight.
Kate Wagner, San Diego

Hello, Kate! That was just as beautiful as some of Dazza's lyrics!

As a longtime reader of your magazine, I cannot tell you how thrilled I was
to see a story about Savage Garden's Darren Hayes! I noticed, however, an
error in the photographs. The man pictured next to Darren Hayes is not his
musical partner Daniel Jones but guitarist Ben Carey.
Cindy Pederson, Hillsboro, Ore.
We regret the error. - ED

Hey there!
I don't know if anybody else saw this, but on VH1, Savage Garden were on
"Back2Back". They asked Darren the story behind "I Knew I Loved You" And he
responded with somethine like this:
The Artist formerly know as Prince was so lonely at one point that he prayed
and prayed to God for a soul mate. Twenty years later, he met her. And no
this day, he honestly believes that he dreamed her into existance. That idea
sort of stuck with Me...
What a thought! magine if we ALL had the luck that the AFNA Prince does!

There's this website where you can vote for the cast of Anne Rice's
"The Vampire Chronicles". Among the people you can vote for is the
band Satan's Night Out. Well, SAVAGE GARDEN have been nominated
for this role! I'm not sure if they're gonna take our votes
seriously but it's worth a try!

I was reading your IKILY thing on TRL and how we should tell MTV we want the
video played on the station, but they actually do play it a lot. I was home
sick one day and they played it 5 or 6 times, just in the period from when
school started to when TRL started. I was home the next day and I saw it a
follow-up of 4 times. They actually play the video a lot more than we think
they do, we're just never home to see it.
Just thought I'd mention that

My Mom and I found out that VH-1's rock collector show was here in Tampa so
she came down and we brought the Gold record and the COA and signed sheet
music there. For those of you who don't know, people bring in music
memorabilia and meet with people who appraise what they've brought in; they
videotape everything and some  of it makes it on the show, which aires on
Vh-1 at Noon (EST) on Saturdays.  Well, we laid it all out on the table and I
started explaining to one of the producer-guys how we had gotten it (he
looked kind of puzzled when he saw what we had).  They wired me with a
microphone, put makeup on Mom and I, touched up our hair... the whole 9.
Well, the guy who we talked to first told us that he had his own SG story...
he was coming back from the Billboard awards and ended up sitting NEXT to
DARREN on the flight back!  He said he talked to him for almost an hour and
said that he is one of the nicest, down to earth musicians he has ever met
and "a very, very nice guy".  So then the appraiser came over and they
started the interview...  during which he asked if we were big fans... I of
COURSE said "oh yeah, HUGE!" and turned around to show him and the camera my
airbrushed affirmation shirt "Mum" got me for Christmas.  All in all, it was
fun and it may even make it on the show - its supposed to air in February, so
check local listings!

Hey there!
I'm conducting a little survey thing. It's just 15 SG related questions to
answer. Then I'm going to make a homepage thing with the answers I get back.

Thanks!  :o)

Hi Lauren!
Geez I haven't written for so long!  Sorry.  That's what I get for
working too much.  Anyway, you have probably heard but Vh1 has added a Savage
Garden message board!!!!  Can you believe it?!  I also e-mailed the vh1 shows
e-mail and request SG as Artist of the Month and why.  I am also going to
write to them about having SG on Storytellers.  It's so nice to have someone
listening!  Well, that's the news for you!  :)  Oh one more thing.  This is
an article from Sam Goody's "Replay" magazine.  A lot of people already know
about it, but here it is for those who don't!

SAVAGE GARDEN
Affirmation (Columbia)
Australia's most romantic super-duo are oddballs who don't think and act like
their Top-40 competitors.  Their second album, Affirmation, leaves no doubt
that this group is unusual.  This is not music made for choreographic ease.
Instead, these swift, vaguely new-wave numbers glide with ease, less intent
on moving butts, more intent on moving hearts and minds.  For people who long
for Top-40 pop with tempo changes and textural depth, Savage Garden could
seem like nirvana. - Jim Meyer

Note: Nirvana in this review is not referring to the group Nirvana.  Pretty
cool eh?  It's so nice to see someone who finally understands!!!!

**Alrighty, I think I need 2 more presenters for the SSAs. So volunteer!!! I
stick by my plan that if I don't get enough presenters, then the only ones
I'm going to share the results of the Savage Song Awards with are the people
who volunteered AND sent me their speeches by the time I requested!

**If you're one of the presenters for the SSAs who did NOT get the email I
sent last week about the due date for the speeches (like if you got your
category in the past few days), then I'll need your speech by this Tuesday,
the 22nd. The people who have emailed me with their category choices and got
the email about the speeches, this one's for you! I hope you do better than
the first group and get them to me on time! Unless you have a good reason,
like one person did! And she still gave me her speech the day after the due
date! If you can't tell, I enjoy griping!

Well, that's it for this week's issue. I know it's a good week when I have a
chunk of news for you - if there's a measly bit of it then I feel like I
didn't do my job! Anyhoo, have a great week, and I'll catch ya later!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make no
money for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty big
company like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me
(especially since you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's earnings,
anyway). My family gets a  big laugh everytime my bank statement arrives.
Besides, my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just watched
contains real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect the
innocent. Is that your final answer?
