Wooo, the most depressing day of the year is coming up. How many of
you will
lock yourselves in your room and listen to "Truly Madly Deeply", "I
Knew I
Loved You", and "Mine" at repeating intervals the entire day? At least
there's no school on Monday, so it's a 3 day weekend! In fact, the
next week
is also a 3 day weekend! Thank you, Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Washington!
Anyhoo,
not much happening in the land of Savage Garden this week. I would
love to
get the SSA show going, but so many people are taking too long to email
me
back with their choice of a category to present, so expect another
2 weeks or
so before you see the "show". I may need just one more presenter after
all,
so if you'd like to join in at the last minute, let me know. I'll get
to the
SGer in the minute, first, let's all give Sarah a big welcome back!
She's
back in Australia from her trip to the U.S. and I miss her like crazy,
but
anyway..! So visit the SGer's site and drop her a line welcoming her
back,
though I think she'd rather be back here in L.A.!

**"I Knew I Loved You" ends its run at #1 on the Billboard charts, dropping
back to #2 this week. The album, meanwhile, has also dropped back 2
places to
#22.
**The guys will be embarking to Latin America for a promotional tour
for the
rest of the month. Then the U.S. will be blessed with their presence
when
they arrive on March 2nd hopefully for more promotional duties here,
although
I think I'm getting greedy because we got way more than Australia did!
**"I Knew I Loved You" is #1 for the 4th straight week on the Rick Dees
Weekly Top 40!

Savage Garden is doing extremely good in Romania, as well! They're
no.1 in
the Bravo charts (and I helped! I'm so proud about it! :) and #6 in
Top 100
at the moment but...rest assured, nothing stops them on the way to
the top!
:) I'm sure of that!! And the entire record is being played on the
radios
here like...non-stop!! Isn't that great??

I thought I would write a song by song review of
Affirmation since
nobody else did. It's not that I have a lot of time on my hands, it's
just that I would rather be doing this than studying for midterms!
(ugh,
biology, I shudder to think...) So, here are my thoughts. Oh, this
is a
REVIEW, meaning good and bad...so if you can't handle reading critism
of
Savage Garden, then please skip my article...but do not e-mail busy
Lauren or me saying how anti Savage Garden I am, and "how could I say
that", because I love Savage Garden, but they are human, and to be
human
is to have flaws. I do want to hear other peoples in depth opinions,
so
e-mail me with those.
Track One: "Affirmation".
The Musical Aspects:
Positive: This song definantly has a danceable beat, sort of an 80's
influence, similar to "The Animal Song" in keyboarding programing as
well. I like how the technical sounds are blended in with the main
instrumental arrangements of the song.
Negative: I wish there were more changes and inflections in the music.
The Lyrical Aspects:
Positive: The lyrics are almost like a self realization, and indeed
affirmation, of one's beliefs, and lessons one has acquired through
ones
life. It is a very uplifting song to listen to, because just about
everyone can relate to something in it. I myself most personally identify
with the line "I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem"
because that has been an on going issue with me since I was nine. I
am
always asking myself "am I beautiful enough for someone to love me"
and
for me that is not a question of my soul, but of my epidermis (outside)
and that is a wrong view to take!
Negative: I wish the lyrics talked more about what humankind struggles
with rather than just expressing beliefs on different issues. Maybe
the
course for the song could be made more on the lines of "we ask ourselves
these questions/and sometimes I find giving my best was just medium/but
in who's eyes/theirs or mine" and then go on to say what his beliefs
in
life our...I think maybe some struggles would balance out the song
a
little.
Track Two: "Hold Me"
The Musical Aspect:
Positive: This music goes from quiet, to intense all throughout the
song,
and it works well with the vocal choices Darren Hayes made. The piano
in
this song is exquisite.
Negative: I wish they took more chances with the sound of this song.
I
get the feeling they played it safe a little. Perhaps a few re mixes?
The Lyrical Aspect:
positive: These words are so honest and straight forward, they are
poetry
in themselves. This is a song that makes the listener actually, literally
FEEL the emotions that are expressed.
Negative: "Tonight I'm finding it hard to be YOUR MAN". This line breaks
the entire flow of the song, and compromises its intense nature. yuck,
yuck. it's like reading Shakespeare revised and having Hamlet say "to
be,
or not to be, dude!". If YOUR MAN could be replaced with something
else...
Track Three: "I Knew I Loved You"
The Musical Aspects:
Positive: I really like the sound of this song, because it has a slow
jazz feel to it, and I love jazz. The hand drums sound great!
Negative: Sometimes the music can be predictable...you can guess the
next
chord. kind of like guessing the next line in a Backstreet Boys' song.
The Lyrical Aspect: This is a sweet song. The lyrics are like your
classic love overture. I think of it as the "Truly" of their sophomore
album. I like some of the imagery used...ie..."when I look into your
eyes/I see my future in an instant" and "angles dancing round you/I
am
complete now that I've found you"
Negative: Again, the lyrics are a bit cliche. ie..."there is no rhyme
or
reason/only this sense of completion". hmmm. perhaps a little more
originality?
Track Four: "The Best Thing"
The Musical Aspects:
Positive: There is a great deal of variety in this song. I think what
stands out the best are the guitars. They have a deep, rich sound at
some
points, and at others light and soaring.
Negative: I wish the guitars were played throughout the song dominantly
The Lyrical Aspects:
Positive: This song is thrilling, because it deals with the fantasy
of
being so close to someone, that they become you, and you them. This
theme
is conveyed well, and expressed in an original way for the most part,
which is hard to do with popular themes...ie..writing an original love
poem.
Negative: sometimes a bit cliche
Track Five: "Crash and Burn"
The Musical Aspects:
Positive: This song has an original quality to it. I really like the
synth and keyboard parts of it. They add a great deal of emotion.
Negative: The jumps in sound are a bit too large...from soft to fully
blown at the end it disrupts the pattern. I think it would have sounded
better to end on a quieter note like it began instead of fading out
the
loud part.
The Lyrical Aspects:
Positive: The lyrics are beautiful. Not in a poetical sense, but in
the
sense that they have a deeper meaning of what we, as humans need most.
Unconditional love, no matter if it is from a lover, teacher, brother,
parent or peer, we all need it. it's part of not only surviving, but
living. We NEED not to be alone.
Negative: "give me a moment please/to tame your wild wild heart" Yuck.
Again the Hamlet effect...."to be, or not to be dude"....Shakespeare
would be turning in his grave!
Track Six: "Chained To You"
The musical aspects:
Positive: This song is one of two on the album that have a strong ray
of
light influence. This music just makes you feel so good! It's music
that
takes you out of yourself, and makes you believe in new possibilities.
Negative: It should end on a quieter note, not fade out.

**People please! Would it kill you to let me know that you're
changing/erasing your AOL screen name?? Every week I get the error
message
when I try to send out the SGer that so and so's name is not a known
AOL user
and it just takes time to find the name in the list and fix it so I
can send
out the SGer to everybody. So please, if you're changing your screen
name or
erasing it, please let me know!
Alrighty, I think that'll do it for this week. Anyone have any info
on the
pending release of "Crash and Burn" in the U.S.? I expect it'll be
soon, but
so far Sony has no release date as of yet. Ok, I'll catch ya next week!
Have
a very Happy Valentine's Day!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I
did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make
no
money for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty
big
company like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me
(especially since you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's
earnings,
anyway). My family gets a big laugh everytime my bank statement
arrives.
Besides, my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just
watched
contains real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect
the
innocent. Is that your final answer?
