The Savage Gardener #104

We got jolted with another earthquake on Tuesday! It was a little one, but
definitely noticeable. I was in class at the time, which was a first! In
fact, we've been practicing earthquake drills since I was in kindergarten and
we FINALLY get an earthquake during school and there's no drill or anything!
Shows the use of that! Anyhoo, tt felt like a giant fist came up and punched
the ground beneath us. After the big one we had a month and a half ago, plus
the ones that happened in Turkey and Mexico, I'm sure there will be those
weirdos going around saying the world's coming to an end!

Well, I'm still mad about "The List". In fact, because I am a completely
irrational person who always lets her temper take over, I'm going to boycott
Darren for a while. Immature and pathetic, I know, but I'm disappointed! In
fact, my dear friend Kara ([email protected]) has thought of a name for my
boycott organization - International Protest Of Wnats Who Are Pissed At
Darren, or IPOWWAPAD (pronounced "eee-powah-pad"). Note, Wnat is the nickname
she gave me a while back because I have the tendency to type "wnat" instead
of "want"! It's pronounced "Nat", by the way! Anyhoo, not only am I the
president of this club, I'm a member too! He will from now until whenever I
get over it (which, knowing me, may be a while) be referred to as whatever
creative name I can think of, although for the moment all I can think of is
Mr. Cancellation!

Note! I'm such a sucker. I watched Darren's performance on the Rosie Special
last night (it's Monday as I type this) and I totally forgive him. It was the
red shirt that did it. Well, not totally. I'll still give him a hard time for
it if I ever cross paths with the guy! No, I think I'll continue being mad at
him for a while just so it doesn't look like I have a weakness. I will stand
my ground! Even though he looked soooo good in that red shirt...!

**For those who didn't get my email last week (such as new subscribers), the
single for "I Knew I Loved You" will be released in the U.S. the first week
of January (Jan. 4th, to be exact) and will feature a new remix of the song
called the "Mini Me Remix". Mini Me? Now THIS I gotta hear.

**"I Knew I Loved You" is at #4 this week on the Billboard Hot 100 (one of
the biggest jumpers of the week, also!) and the album is up a couple spots at
#22 on the Billboard 200.

**The Song is also at #9 on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40. Rumor has it it'll
go all the way to #1 because of the Billboard charts that Rick Dees bases his
countdown on!

**Mr. Cancellation is in the latest issue of Allure magazine (December). For
what, I don't know, I refuse to look! Ah, who am I kidding. I snuck a peek
while in the store and I'm sitting here denying it to all of you. I DIDN'T
LOOK! <crosses arms> Thanks to [email protected] for the info.

**"I Knew I Loved You" is at #6 this week on the VH1 Top Ten Countdown!

**Darren will appear on the Canadian station YTV on Friday, December 10th.
The show airs tomorrow night and repeats again Saturday mornings. I don't
have the time so if you're in Canada you'll have to check your TV listings.
Thanks to [email protected]  for the info.

**Ok, even though I'm peeved at Darren, I won't deny that his performance on
"A Rosie Christmas" was FANTASTIC, as usual. And can I just say that I LOVE
red on him?! He looked incredible in that red shirt! Forget the sudden
obsession with giving money to charities instead of buying them little gifts,
people, use the money to buy Darren RED SHIRTS! I noticed that he didn't come
out at the end with all the other stars on the show. Hmm...looks like he
CANCELLED that too!

Sigh...note here too. I just found out why Dazza wasn't out at the end with
the others. And I was so proud of myself, thinking I had pegged him for
another cancellation. Anyhoo, he wasn't out with the others at the end
because he wasn't there. His part was taped the day he did Rosie's show a
couple weeks ago. Figures.

**Obviously you noticed that Savage Garden wasn't on "The Donny and Marie
Show" this past Tuesday! Which means.....ha! I was originally right! It WAS
taped on December 7th, which means...it's airing the 21st! If you'll excuse
me, I'll go gloat to myself :)   Note here too! Supposedly Darren was sick
and that's why the show was cancelled, and supposedly they're appearing in
mid-January. I don't know what to tell you because there have been so many
things floating around. I'll see what I can find out for you!

**Just got word that the Mexican CD does NOT have the extra B-sides ("I Don't
Care" and "My World Is Yours"). They just have the regular "Affirmation" that
everybody else has. So if you're scrambling to get the Mexican release
because you think it has the B-sides, don't do it! It's a waste! A note here
too! Supposedly the B-side "My World Is Yours" does NOT exist. Guess we'll
have to see!

**Cream magazine is out in Australia, which has Dazza on the cover and a
four-page spread. I've seen the pics, and I'm sorry Dazza, I love you, but
lose the eyeliner!!!!! Also, a brand new magazine in Australia called Sain
Unlimited feature Savage Garden on their front cover. Thanks to
[email protected]  for all that info!

**Columbia is having a special holiday concert webcast on Tuesday, Dec. 14th
at 10:00pm EST. Check out www.columbiarecords.com/holiday   for more details!

**I'm sure most of you saw the Billboard Awards last night. Did you
notice...Daz wore a red shirt! I'm telling ya, we're psychically connected
somehow. Although I was disappointed that he presented with Mandy Moore,
whose sang I can't stomach! By the way, wasn't the Meaty Cheesy Boys
performance hysterical?? I'm going to marry one of those guys! And can
somebody PLEASE explain to me what Britney Spears was attempting to do with
her performance? That was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen!

i caught darren's rendition of "last christmas on rosie tonight (completely
by accident- was studying japanese with a friend in her room and it came on,
so of course i went ballistic :), and it was really good! if you or anyone
caught it on tape do you know if it could possibly be downloaded into mp3
format? (yes, i've turned into the typical college mp3 nerd/junkie, i admit
it. ;) but i'm getting ready for christmas and that would be a really fun one
to have. :) thanks!

Hi, Lauren!

I'm subscribed to the Savage Gardener and I have a question related to
them.  I was just wondering if you would know what issue of JUICE yearbook
was it that Darren did a photoshoot for, the one Leonie mentioned in one of
her SG updates?  I saw the November issue (with the Blair Witch Project as
cover story), but I don't know if that's the one.  Maybe you know or you
know someone who might?  Could you help me out?  Hope it's not a bother.
Thanks so much!   =)

[email protected]

I stuck this in here just in case one of you lovely people might know. As I
said in my response to her, I figure that if she saw the November issue, then
most likely it'll be the December. If anyone knows, could you please let her
know (or me, so I could alert everybody else). Oh, and Cherrisse, it's never
a bother! That's what I'm here for! ~Lauren :o)

Hi Lauren!

I was listening to an old SG interview and heard something pretty
interesting, related to Affirmation!!  I was about to watch the movie Strange
Days, which as you might know was the inspiration for the lyrics of Memories
Are Designed To Fade (not that it had anything to do with me deciding to
watch the movie...hehe) and I had a couple of minutes to spare so I decided
to listen to the interview I had where Darren is talking about the song and
the movie, and I heard something that I found very interesting...where Darren
says:  "We had finished recording the record <the debut album, that is> and
he <Daniel> went into the studio and started working on this project that I
would describe as gunning down romance...because Daniel came up with the
title, that would be a song...and I'd love to call a song that one day.....".
Cool, hey?  And the movie turned out to be good too...there's also a line in
the movie that got my attention, where Mace (or Macy?) says to Lenny (the
main character in the movie, who can't let go of his ex-girlfriend):
"Memories were meant to fade Lenny, they're designed that way for a reason."
Hmmmmm!  So now I've gone all crazy over MADTF again, and can't stop
listening to it!  The song makes much more sense to me after seeing the
movie, so if you haven't seen it, I recommend it! :)

[email protected]

Isn't that awesome info!? It was definitely a really interesting piece, so
thanks a lot, Sally, for sending that in! ~Lauren :o)

================================================================
Dear participants (and would-be participants),

I think some of you have received my first email message regarding The Savage
Garden Fan Book. Well, this book will allow Daz & Dan to know a bit about
their fans, i.e. us. Now in my first email, I mentioned that the book will be
sent by mail around the world. Well, there has been a major change in the
order of the book. The book will not be passed around by mail, as I'm sure it
will burn a huge hole in your bank account. Most of the participants are from
the USA, and besides, getting 58 addresses and sending them around the world
will take about 2 years - I'm doubtful if all of you will remain SG fans. This
book may also be destroyed or stolen if sent by the mail. So here's how it
goes:

All fans will be allocated 2 pages for their info. One page is for photos and
the other is for personal information (P.I.) All of you EMAIL your P.I. to me
at both [email protected] & [email protected].  More info on photos will
come at the end of this email. So far, this is the order of the pages:
(If you've applied earlier - prior to 8th December 1999 - check your names
here)

PAGES...
1-6 : Not Available (torn out ages ago)
7-8 : Me (Pandora's Palace)
9-10 : Ella - England
11-12 : Claudia - Mexico
13-14 : Terri - USA
15-16 : Ange - Australia
17-18 : Kerry - Canada
19-20 : Brittany - Canada
21-22 : Cheryl - Australia
23-24 : Kristen - USA
25-26 : Katie Waszak - USA
27-28 : Sheryl - USA
29-30 : Katie Albright - USA
31-32 : Sandra - USA

These two people have not confirmed their entry but I will allocate these
pages to them:
33-34 : Nikki - USA
35-36 : Stephanie - unknown
Please confirm by 2 weeks or else you will not get your pages.

You can give a title for your section, like "Pandora's Palace" :) for mine.
The odd-numbered pages will be used for photos, while the other page will be
used for P.I.

Here's a sample P.I. form. Feel free to add in anything else - but not too
many:
(* - compulsory)

Name : *
More Known As :
Address : * (i'll get this from the addys you sent me)
Email : *
B-Day : *
Starsign :
Faves : (this can be movies, music, food, drink, whatever)
Hobbies :
Ambition :
N-E-Thing Else? : (any inspirational words like "Stay yourself" or anything)
Rank : *
Message to SG : *

Here are the ranks - pick one :
+ WEED - Savage Garden hater
+ GARDEN SNAIL - Indifferent or has never heard of SG
+ GARDENER - The "I Love This Song" people
+ SAVAGE GARDENER - Basic fan. Likes SG a lot but isn't very die-hard
+ SAVAGED GARDENER - Die-hard fan. Will do anything for SG.
+ SAVAGER - Like SDGR but is either a Fanzine member or went to a SG
concert
+ FLOWERBUD - Likes SG (or one of them) for their looks ONLY.

If you are a SAVAGER, you have two more spaces to fill:

Fanzine Number:
Concert Date/Venue :

Fil accordingly. You can fill both or just one.

OK, now the photos. Please don't send me those usual-sized photos. What I want
you to do is cut yourself off the photos, so like if there's a photo of you
and a gang of friends, cut off "you" in the photo and send it in to me. This
way, you can add in more photos and save space. Only send usual-sized photos
if you have no idea how to cut them. You can have childhood photos, baby
photos, anything - as long it's you. Here's the address to send in your
photos:

Note from Lauren! I took out her address because I won't put personal
addresses into the SGer. You'll have to email her to get it if you're
participating.

Those of you with a fax machine can fax in their info to 607-8613735. Each
page will (hopefully) be decorated differently. If you would like something
special placed on your page (a sticker, picture, etc) or have something you
would like to give Daz & Dan via this book, send it in with your photo.

Oh, yes. Take a small strip of paper (not TOO small) and sign your name on it.
Those signatures will be placed in a letter to Daz & Dan which will accompany
the book.

Please be prompt and pass THIS EMAIL around to other fans. We need 58 people
quick coz we need to fill the pages till 128. If you know of any other zines
or mailing lists which have posted my earlier message, please post this one in
as well.

I hope to get your messages soon. Thank you.

                            Savage Classifieds

Could you please put this in for the Savage Classifieds?:

This is a bit early, but I'd like to trade the CD single of Affirmation (in
Australia) with Crash and Burn (from anywhere in the rest of the world) when
they are both released.  Also, if anyone has:
- the Japanese single of The Animal Song
- the Canadian IKILY (the one with the remix?)
- *any* To The Moon and Back (but in particular US)
- I Want You '98 (UK)
I'd love to trade the Australian IKILY or TAS for them!
Or, I will trade the Australian debut album, rereleased debut album (with
remix disk) or Affirmation album (with the CD-rom) for several overseas
singles besides (or including) the ones listed, and except for IKILY and
TAS.
So now that I've confused you all, if you'd like to trade please email me at
[email protected] !  :)     Thanks :)

**There was a mistake in the addy featured in last week's SGer. The correct
web address is:
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Field/325/

**This has been bugging me for sooo long! In "Chained to You", right after
the instrumental mid-way through the song, the song starts to slow down  (the
lyrics are "And I think about you all the time/Yeah I think about it all the
time (tell me it's madness, I barely know you)"). Right after "And I think
about you all the time", you can just hear a whisper of Darren saying
SOMETHING. I hear "affirmation" in it, but I'm not too sure. Anyone notice
this too? Anyone have any ideas about what he's saying??

**Alright, I was going to include something in this SGer that I thought most
of you hadn't seen. My friend Kara ([email protected]) and I even did a
"mini-project" based on this "item". However, I remembered that Columbia is
absolutely up in arms about people even TALKING about this (for what reason,
I don't know), and if I do put this in the SGer, I have to know that you're
not going to pass it around to other people so that Columbia may get a hold
of it. It's the dumbest, smallest thing in the world, yet Columbia could
actually fine me for it AND shut down the SGer. If you want to know what it
is (I'm holding back on even telling you about it because they're so
sensitive about it for some stupid reason!), I have to be assured that you're
going to keep it to yourself. So reassure me!

**I have a terrible terrible toothache. My wisdom tooth is growing in. I'm in
severe pain. I can't even eat my Hershey that my mom bought me! All sympathy
ecards can be sent to this email address.

**Ok, I said I wouldn't bring up my feelings about the BBS, but now I don't
care who reads what I say because it's how I honestly feel and frankly, I'm
not sorry I feel this way! Firstly, I've never had a person-to-person
conflict with someone on the board, so that's not what this is about. Anyhoo,
I think the board has become infiltrated with pretentious (thanks, Kara, for
the spiffy big word!) people who are set on dominating the board AND taking
the position of moderator away from the lovely Carla who does a wonderful job
and I'm in no way attacking her because she's been nothing but sweet. You
can't speak out against something without the entire cult jumping on your
back and asking Carla to lock the posts. One thing that REALLY gets to me is
how far they've taken the privacy issue. It's become a joke, not an honest
caring! You older subscribers who "know" me better than the newer ones know
that I've always refrained from going into the personal lives of Darren and
Daniel. The people on the board jump on the backs of casual fans (ones who
DON'T know every aspect of the guys' lives) for innocently inquiring about
Darren's marriage simply because they thought he was married but he's not
wearing his wedding ring, and what's the deal, they want to know. Where's the
harm in that? Yes, it is the policy of the Columbia BBS boards to not talk
about personal information (but who really reads those policies, anyway?).
All they have to do is just tell the person that it's not allowed, not jump
down their throats! I'd understand if it became that people obsessed over it
and talked about nothing else, but it's just a simple, common curiosity. In
doing the SGer, I've had people email me to ask me about the wedding ring
absence, and I tell them. No "Don't you dare ask that!" or anything of the
sort. Why shouldn't I tell them? It's all innocent! And after that, nothing
else is said about the subject because that simple thing they were curious
about is settled and that's all they wanted. The people on the BBS demand
posts inquiring about that to be locked, they jump down the throats of the
poor people who have no idea that people are so sensitive about it, and
basically make them feel bad. The whole issue of respecting their privacy was
very well handled and honest, now it's more about defending Darren so he can
see what "terrific" fans he has when he reads the board. If you ask me,
Darren and Leonie made a HUGE mistake telling everyone they read the board.
It's lost the honesty and is such a sham. It's all about who can feed
Darren's ego the best. Honestly, the last straw that made me decide to bring
back this newsletter was seeing what the BBS has become. No, I'm not an
influential person unlike some of the people on the BBS; no, Darren and
Leonie don't read this newsletter. But you know what? I want a place where
people can say how they feel without feeling like they're going to be
reprimanded for what they say, without feeling worried that somebody's going
to jump down their throats for saying something. Abby thinks "Crash and Burn"
is not a good idea for the second single; I'm boycotting Darren for a stupid
stupid reason, and I don't feel like I have to agree or be happy with them
all the time just because I'm a fan; Gina thinks "I Knew I Loved You" is more
like a Backstreet Boys song; someone (I can't remember who!) absolutely hated
"Affirmation" when she first heard it. That's fine by me! No jumping down
your throats for feeling this way by me! It's your opinion and I totally
respect that. I think the BBS people should do the same. I'm an honest Savage
Garden fan, true to my honest feelings, no matter how they come across. Are
you? Kudos to Daniel for being true to his heart, even if it meant
disappointing some of us. If only his fans could do the same!!!!!

**Another note: In next week's SGer I'm going to put in a post on the BBS
about a very negative experience she had meeting Darren. I'm so infuriated
with this issue. Not with how Darren acted, but how the BBS posters are
treating this girl. She was so grateful for my message telling her how I
supported her that she's allowing me to put her story in the SGer. However,
she wanted to redo it so it will appear next week.

SOB! I never thought I'd be disappointed in Savage Garden's fans! What
happened to everyone during these past 6 months that the SGer was gone? I
used to be so so impressed with the group of fans, now I'm getting more and
more ashamed as the days go by. On that not-so-good note I close this week's
SGer! Only 6 more days until Christmas break is here! Yay! Catch ya next week!

Peace, love, and Savage Garden!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Darren Hayes and/or Daniel Jones. I wish I did, but
since slavery isn't legal in the U.S. anymore, I'm outta luck. I make no
money for the "publication" of this newsletter, so if you're a nasty big
company like that dumb Hit Records, don't waste your time suing me
(especially since you're probably trying to get a chunk of Savage's earnings,
anyway). My family gets a  big laugh everytime my bank statement arrives.
Besides, my life savings consist of $2.54. The program you have just watched
contains real-life stories. The names have been changed to protect the
innocent. Is that your final answer?
